Lofton, Parker to be honored by state hall of fame

Chris Lofton and Candace Parker are among current and former University of Tennessee athletes to be honored at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on Feb. 29 in Nashville.

Parker of basketball and softball pitcher Monica Abbott will be recognized as Female Amateur Athlete of the Year, along with Victoria Dunlap, a University of Kentucky freshman who won the heptathlon at the USA Youth Outdoor Championships.

Lofton of the UT men’s basketball team will be recognized as Male Amateur Athlete of the Year, along with David Price, Vanderbilt baseball pitcher.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback and former UT star Peyton Manning is the Male Professional Athlete of the year, along with PGA golfer Brandt Snedeker. Former Lady Vol Tamika Catchings of the WNBA Indiana Fever is the Female Professional Athlete of the Year.

The Lady Vols NCAA basketball tournament championship team will be among four teams recognized as Amateur Team of the Year. The others are Lambuth women’s basketball, Martin Methodist women’s soccer and Vanderbilt bowling, all of whom won national championships.

The banquet is at the Renaissance Hotel. Tickets are $125 (615-242-4750).

Lady Vols athletic director Joan Cronan has already been announced as an inductee.
