Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl wishes JaJuan Smith hadn't tried that showboat play that backfired Tuesday night at Alabama.
Now Pearl wishes everyone else would get over it and move on to a visit to Mississippi State on Saturday night.
"It's interesting,'' Pearl said Thursday, "if he's got to make 125 plays in the course of a game, offensively, defensively, transition, passing, shooting, whatever, that's one play ... It happened. Turn the page, let's move on to the next play.''
The seventh-ranked Vols (18-2, 5-1 SEC) won at Alabama, 93-86, only their second win in the past 19 trips to Coleman Coliseum.
They're on the road again Saturday at Mississippi State (14-6, 5-1). Tipoff is 7 p.m. EST on FSN.
At Alabama, UT led 19-12 in the first half when Smith, instead of dunking or shooting a layup in transition, tried to bounce the ball off the backboard for teammate Tyler Smith to dunk.
An Alabama player intercepted the carom and triggered a fast break the other way that ended up with the Tide sinking a 3-point basket to close the gap to 19-15, a five-point swing.
"We definitely want to take better care of the basketball than that,'' Pearl said.
"Even if we complete the play, it wasn't the right time and place. Time and score is a factor at all times.''
Smith took responsibility after the game for his mistake and admitted he avoided looking toward the bench at the time.
Pearl said he didn't yell or take Smith out of the game because the play "spoke for itself.''
Judging from talk radio the past 48 hours, a number of UT fans would have had a stronger reaction than Pearl did.
"I had to say very little to JaJuan,'' Pearl said. "He understood.
"At the same time, if I climbed on him does he make five threes? Does he close out the game?''
Smith actually made four 3-point shots, three of them in clutch situations in the final five minutes. He also had five steals and five rebounds to go with his 22 points.
"Last year,'' Pearl said, "I said JaJuan was our most valuable player, and that's on a team with Chris Lofton as our most outstanding player and Dane Bradshaw is captain of the all-glue team.
"JaJuan fills a stat sheet. He oftentimes gets the opponents' best guard, he's a tough kid, he's a competitor and he certainly fits in with what we try to do defensively with his aggressive play.''

I have no problem with JaJuan! I certainly think Coach Pearl needs no advice on how to discipline his own players!! I agree take a deep breath, hold your tongue, and move on!!

I agree... We won, move on. And the only one who rates to second guess Coach Pearl's reaction or lack of reaction is Coach Pat.

I see him tear into his players on the bench, but he never calls them out in the press. What a coach!

No problem with that play per se. He more than made up for it down the stretch.
The only issue I have with it is that it is another example of guys not thinking on the court. I just don't want to see this team not achieve what they are capable of because of bondheades moves. What has been lost in this is Chism taking another ill-advised three at the end of the game. They both come from the same underlying issue to me - lack of a head on their shoulders at times.
I'm all for up-tempo and semi-reckless ball. I love the press and the go get em attitude. It works and it is different from what nearly every other team is used to. But, you can do that and still use a little restraint and sense on the offensive end.

Jajuan is always the goat if he makes a mistake. We have plenty of other plays where guys make mistakes that could potentially cost us the game but for some reason when its jajuan it becomes a huge deal. Way more positive things happen when he is on the floor than negatives. What about all his steals, deflections that lead to steals by other guys and all of the flat out hustle plays where he puts it on the line for his teammates, coaches and fans. Maybe because he walked on everyone looks for the reason why he wasn't a big time recruit. I personally glad he wears the orange and white because he wears it with pride.

After the play, Bruce had the look you have when your wife tells you she just put $2000 on the credit card. You're so mad you can't move or speak, but you know if you blow up it only makes the situation worse.......BP is truly a b-ball genius.
Not that my wife has ever done such a thing, by the way.

Win a championship first, and then you can do all the Globetrotters crap you want. I love Coach BP, but that's a perspective that I think his players must have before all others.

Get off of JuJuan. This crap all statrted with Mr. Self-Righteous Mickey Dearstone. It was one stinking play. We won the game. Geez 4 yrs. ago we'd been happy to see a steal. Hey Mickey I hope Pat doesn't make any sudden stops because you'll be about shoulder deep then!

I have seen this happen before. The talk show hosts allow the conversation on a single play that was less than 2 seconds out of a game, to go on and on for most of two days of broadcasts. I'll bet that it still goes on today. The problem is that unless there is some trivial negative to talk about the listeners and the show hosts don't have anything to make them look "magnanimous and outraged " at this mere mortal who missed a single assist attempt.
I like the play. It just didn't work.

Jujuan made a similar last year against South Carolina. He learned his lesson then and didn't do it the rest of the season. Just needed to relearn that lesson.

This whole thing is ridiculous. Let's move on. He made one bad play. Sometimes UT fans (I am a big one) are just never satisfied. We have a great team and a great coach and for the first time in my 30 years it is fun to watch men's basketball. Perhaps some fans want to bring Kevin ONeill back. I also agree that Mickey Dearstone started this; I heard him on the radio. No wonder ESPN thinks we are nuts

Wow..I didn't even worry about this play when it happened.
This team has more problem with when a shot goes up having someone,...anyone... block out.
Even if we don't get the rebound at least don't let 3-4 of their players all have their turn tiping the ball under the basket without one of ours even getting a finger on the ball.

I'll take that play in Jan. but not in March.
This is a high bball IQ team because of Coach Pearl and I agree with him. If you pile on JuJuan at that point you may lose him for the rest of the game. He might be afraid to shoot those 3 balls and we lose. This team plays hard and lose and with this style you will have some plays that are not text book!!!
On the positive side, I'm glad it was a play to get his teammate a highlight dunk. It is worse to me if it were a 360 degree slam that he misses trying to be selfish.
This team has no ego, they love to share the wealth and get their teammates the rock!!!!
GO VOLS
GO JUJUAN
GO COACH PEARL

Tigervol9802, if you don't want to see the occasional boneheaded play, then I'd say your best bet is to follow teams like UCLA, Georgetown or Wisconsin.
Pearl's style of play is to allow players tremendous freedom to make on the fly decisions on the court, and he knows that the occasional poor decision just goes along with the intensity and freedom that he gives his players. While I know Pearl would prefer our guys to always make well-thought out, solid moves, our pressing, fast-paced game is at times not conducive to such decisions.
I also think Pearl is well aware that we're going to win a lot more than lose with his style, occasional bonehead play and all. And I'm willing to bet neither he nor our players are going to change:
Pearl: at UT: 64-21, 75.3% won; overall: 381-105, 78.4% won

YOU PEOPLE ON JUJUAN'S CASE, GET OVER IT!!! From all the hoopla, you'd think he'd shot Bruce Pearl or something! Look, these guys are talented players, but they are human; they're still, for the most part, kids. And kids, in learning the ins and outs of life, make mistakes. But they learn from them and move on. If JuJuan had pulled off that play, I serious doubt you'd all be talking about how dangerous it was for him to be showboating, you'd be pushing ESPN to make it the play of the week.
What that play DID remind me of was the teams of old, circa 10 BP--Before Pearl--where we had five high school all-stars/NBA-wannabe-all-stars looking to make that highlight reel and NOT looking for a win. Bruce has the same, if not better, talent today, and yet these guys are playing like a cohesive team, intent on one thing, winning the next game and, ultimately, a shot at a trophy and a ring. Within the very definition of team is the concept that if you aren't playing your best ball or just making a stupid move, there are four other guys watching your back and taking up the slack. If a guy has to throw away a ball occasionally for that to happen, then so be it.

Zander, it is fans like you that lose credibility for your argument. First off, I'm guessing you are a memphis fan. Sounds to me like you aer with your comments.
Next, how many championships has Memphis won....in anything? It's pretty easy to be undefeated when you play a group of unranked opponents and a conference schedule that reads like a D-II school.
Lots of talk for a team that has lost the last 2 years to the Vols. Good luck against Southern Methodist....wow, now thats a powerhouse program isn't it?

Pearl can take this position now - what would he be saying if the Vols had lost - by 2 or 5 points.

RPI is done by a computer who cannot watch the games like a human can. The polls are made up of humans who see the teams play and last time I checked, they ranked MEMPHIS not Rocky Flop as #1. "Rocky Flop you'll always be, second in Tennessee." Here is a happy thought to leave you with...... 21-17 ring a bell guys? 1996 Peyton Manning...ORANGE CRUSHED!

Do it at home, not on the road. The layup would have quited the crowd on the road. The successful dunk would have created a frenzy at home.
Bruce gets on them about defense and rebounding, let's them be a bit loose on offense. Can't argue, plus it probably creates recruiting opps.
As long as we don't get punks, I think it's fun and fine.

Coach Pearl understands that playing well, especially on the road, requires CONFIDENCE and looseness and aggressiveness. JaJuan exudes all those qualities. You can't play scared, you have to have that chip on your shoulders. Had the pass off the boards resulted in a rim rocking slam by Tyler, the message to Alabama would have been.."get you some of that". The play didn't work, but it still sent a message to Alabama players that we're here to beat you and beat you badly. JaJuan completed his message with some incredibly, CONFIDENT, clutch shooting in the end.

All of these negative posts are really a compliment to this year's Vols. We have now progressed to such a point that the bar has been raised to a level none of us would have even dreamed about three years ago. We now demand perfection. I know that when I watch a game I now groan about things that would not have bothered me in the old days. Keep it up, boys, we complain because we love you and want you to excel on every play.

This on-going blubba about JaJuan definitley started with Mickey Dearstone and Heather Haarington on Wednesday morning. I was so mad and I tried to call in on my way to work but couldn't get through. Yesterday morning I tried to get on again and got through but they wouldn't take my call on the subject. One caller actually had the nerve to call JaJuan a 'Zero, instead of a Hero'. MAN!! I was ticked! So on the way home from work they are still talking about it...but this time it's the sensible, more knowledgable guys...John Wilkinson and Chip Kane, who are not negative towards the UT Men's team like the morning crew is. When the caller said JuJuan was a 'Zero', Jeff or Heather should have contradicted him, but they didn't. They chuckled and didn't say a word. That made me even madder. So when I got on the talk show in the afternoon I was happy to be talking to John and Chip and to hear that Bruce had made the statements about JaJuan in this article. It's what I would expect from our coach and I would expect that our monring show hosts could start being more positive and supportive of the men's team. I don't think it's too much to ask. JaJuan (and I know him personally) is a good kid and the leader of this team and a dynamic player. He has baled us out many times. He was the player that in the last timeout at Xavier, pumped the other players up and they got it done. I'd say the same thing happened at Alabama. The UT fans that called in and said anything negative about him should be ashamed of themselves...as should our Sports Animal morning hosts...Mickey, Heather and Jeff!! I hope they read these posts. :)

What you don't seem to understand is Vol fans know how good our team is. We also know who is next in line, which is Miss State. Your actions reflect how desperate you are to make a statement by beating the Vols. Since it will only be your 2nd ranked team you've played.
Funny how teams like Memphis have to look so far ahead to define their season. Go back and play Siena for the 4th time and come back after the game. Because at this point, really...nobody gives a sh!t about Memphis.

zander, forgive my honest mistake about posting the wrong thing. I guess I was already thinking about the upcomming win the Vols will get in Memphis next month.
As for clearing things up, let me do so now. For a memphis kid, you quickly forget recent history.
98-99 Season 57-58 Tennessee beats Memphis
99-2000 Season 74-69 Tennessee beats memphis (again)
2000-2001 Season 86-76 Tennessee wins again. Starting to see a trend?
2001-2002 season memphis with a win (yay) 71-69 on a controversal finish.
02-05 Memphis chooses not to play the Vols (good decision Calapari, cry some more?)
05-06 memphis wins again (wow, you go Memphis high!)
06-07 season 76-58 Tennessee wins again.
Looks like Memphis is 2-4 against Tennessee as of late. And Zander...you don't even want to go back prior to 99...you will REALLY embarrass yourself.

Yes. Memphis has the #1 Non-Conference RPI, but the Vols' Non-Conference RPS is #2. Overall, Tennessee's RPI is #1.
And, there is no way Memphis can win a state title because they don't play Vandy becasue they are typically afraid of SEC teams.

Hey zander -
which major conference is going to reject your suitcase college next? Gonna get on your knees and beg the Big East to let you in again?

fjm, umm, yes it is. Your website uses the exact same formula (very simple really) the only difference is that it is updated every five minutes. Supposedly. Wasn't updated this morning like the one I volunteered. Now it is. Guess what. Tennessee #1. My point was two days ago Zander was citing the significance of the RPI and now today he says it doesn't matter. Whatever. See you in April.

Tennisisajoke- why dont you drop the T and add a P to your name! It would probably better suit you.
Zander- must be tough for you team to get amped up to play church teams every week. Calpo brother is earning his pay in Memphis!

I wish everyone could be this positive when ANY of the students at the university make mistakes. I think it is extremely interesting that every time a football player makes a mistake on the football field everybody wants to jump on the coach. It is important to remember these are young men. GO VOLS, BASKETBALL, AND FOOTBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys, I can't believe you are still trying to argue with the losers from Memphis who keep posting on here. There is nothing any of us can say that will stop their yammering, so the best thing to do is to just ignore them. We hope and believe the Vols will win, and they hope and believe that the Tigers will win. NOTHING THEY OR WE POST ON HERE WILL HAVE THE SLIGHTEST IMPACT ON WHO WINS! All we are doing in the meantime is giving those guys the sense of importance that they seem to need so desperately.
THE_VOL, several posters said they would have treated JaJuan with a good deal less patience than CBP did, for this and a number of other ill-advised (in their opinions) moves in games. I have a certain amount of coaching and playing experience, too, and I would probably have long ago benched JaJuan for some of his antics on the court. However, on the whole, I would have to say that his positive contributions to this point in his career have FAR outweighed the negatives. He has shown repeatedly that he is a warrior on the court. CBP, in contrast to me and, apparently, you, knows these kids, knows what makes them tick, and knows how to get them to play hard and play together. I would have to say that it has worked out pretty well so far. While the principles of basketball are darn near eternal, every player and every team is different. The great coaches know how to get the most out of the players and teams they have, rather than the ones they might ideally wish they had. CBP has his own philosophy about these things, and I would have to say it seems to be more in tune with the way young players see things these days than the doctrines and attitudes most of us old guys grew up with. I am humble enough to realize that CBP probably gets better results with this team than I, and probably you, could have. I will take the occasional insult to my sense of how things should be done on the court in return for the smile I usually have on my face when the game is over. So, yeah, I slightly changed my opinion when CBP explained how he handles JaJuan. He gets the big bucks to make those decisions, not me and not you. Give the guys a break, at least until they prove over a period of time that their way isn't working.

Well said, Johnlg00. To buttress that point: Jujuan has not been found with MJ in his pocket or smoke lingering in his room. He has not taken someone's car and wrecked it. He has not been found wandering the campus under the influence, or in the middle of an unruly crowd in front of the dorm. He has not punched someone in the face or threatened anyone with a baseball bat. All he did was try to showboat...once. We need more like him.
Let's move on.

I say the same thing about Coach Pearl as Coach Summitt - let them do their job, and just cheer on the Vols and Lady Vols. WE don't know dookey about doing it better than they do!
GO BIG ORANGE!!

It's funny how an article about jujuan becomes a ut vs memphis debate. It will all unfold on the feb. 23. I am all vol, but if vandy or memphis were to go farther in the tourney i would pull for either of them. It has been nice to here that TN is a basketball state and not here so much about UK and U of L or UNC and Duke. It's about time we get a little respect. Go Vols !!!!!!

THE_VOL - you say you guys as though we all live in Knoxville complaining on their radio stations!! We don't all get to hear Pearls comments on it until we read them on here. I didn't think it was a big deal when Pearl left him in the game and I don't now!! I didn't come to that conclusion because Pearl said so, and I'm sure most independant thinking people on here didn't either!! Think about that before you open that trap!!

let Jujuan do his thing. He made up for his mistake by taking over in the second half. It takes a man to overcome stupidity and pull his team through.

Zander, Tiger High only has one game left with an opponent that has an RPI better than 80. Of course that would be #1 TN. Their RPI will improve even after we kick their A$$. Your kittens should feel lucky to be on our schedule.

Let's run Dearstone out of this town! I heard some of his outrageous commante and I'm over him. He has an agenda,we all know what it is,JEALOUSY! His isn't the only game in town now,and he's mad. If you guys had heard the things he said, you would be beyond mad! It was UNBELIEVEABLE. He and those like him, will ultimately make BP leave. If we allow it. Man, he made me mad!

nice to see another tennessee football player in trouble....Fulmer's Felons! Oh and to the person about saying it is "texas and kentucky," but the reality is kentucky is not a good basketball team, i don't care what it says on the front of their jersey.

Tennisajoke - you couldn't even play tennis!! But here is a little funny bit on why Memphis gets some of the talent they get!!
http://www.thenewsstar.com/apps/pbcs.....
Here is the part that applies to your kitties. I threw the link in case you wanted to see for yourself!!! Chump!!
"Brown is not yet academically qualified, however, and could play immediately as a partial qualifier at USM because Conference-USA's policies are not as stringent as those of the Southeastern Conference. USM is also closer to home and has a new offensive-minded head coach in Larry Fedora, a former Florida and Oklahoma State offensive coordinator"

tennisajoke - that person was me... spin all you want wise guy but NONE, and I mean NONE, of the teams in your teeny weeny conference could touch either of the two schools we are talking about. I'd put my money on Kentucky any day if they were playing your little kitties!! chump!!

Tennisajerk: We're sorry that your tiny, low budget "school" is irrelevant. You deserve to be proud! Like a small child with his first Tonka toy after years of plastic cowboys and indians. UT could buy, sell and pave over your little "hood". But why? When you people can afford more than 4 or 5 sports..then yap. We don't consider you at all. At anything. Tiger High is like a pimple on UT's a--. The Clearasil is coming soon.Memphis is a joke. Guys let's not waste our time talking about them. We have meaningful games to play..ie. all SEC games.

At least Dfree can spell.
Since the past games foretell the future games and there is no way anyone can beat Memphis because they are undefeated we might as well surrender and crown Memphis king. Tell Calipari to stop playing because he has won it all. Go ahead, stop right now. Really. Stop.
The rest of us will continue playing for "second" place.

Well said johnlg00. But as you can see these mental midgets pay more attention to us than they do you. You can't reason with stupid, johnlg00. You people need to put the white lightening down and research before you post. I don't know about Tennisajoke, while it's fun I tire of proving you hillbillies wrong.
Go Tigers!!! Undefeated and undisputed #1!!!!!
____________________________
zander616 - Read johnlg00's post at 4:20!! You agree then with johnlg00 that you memphis guys are losers?? Great! Now we agree on something!! As far as the hillbillies comment goes let's do acedemic research on the top Universities in the state of Tennessee and see which schools come out on top!!
Memphis - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrev...
UT - http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandrev...
Tennessee is 96th nationally in both public and private!!
Memphis is fourth tier??? hahahahahahahahahaha
Who's the hillbilly university now!! chump!!

I'm as happy as a pig in slop, zander, that we beat Bama. As you know, and state quite often, we hillbillies are easy to amuse. We don't get out much, mules must get their rest for plowing the fields, so reading your post is our source of entertainment. I'm so looking forward to Feb 23, seeing the tigerpaws and Coach Cal in the comfy confines of home handle their first defeat of the season. Yes, the likes of wins against Siena, Pepperdine, Sou. Miss are one thing, a perfect season in Conference USA may be a thing, but wins against SEC hillbilly hosses, now that's a hoss of a different stable.

Zander,
you show me where on this link (that you posted) that has USC OR Arizona ranked.

You are a complete moron.
Try again to prove me wrong, it won't work. Go back to conference USA where you can play another 0-6 team in conference.
