I'd love to see any of these three in orange next season. Hopefully the weekend goes well and we can finish strong with a couple or all of these three.

I don't want to make any predictions that I have no information on, but it seems the last school a kid visits might have the best shot at him if they are still uncertain.
You might never have a second chance to make a first impression, but the last school will be freshest on their minds.

6'4" WR? 5'11" 220lb RB? 6'3" LB? All sounds good to me!
Hey, we owe Auburn one after 'Cadillac' Williams committed to us than we to Auburn instead. This could make up for it if he is as good as advertised....sounds like a bruising runner at 220lbs. be nice if those Hargrave guys stick together (Coples and Davis) and come to Tennessee.
GO VOLS!!!

im worried about ward, we were the last school that he visited and rivals and scout still has him going unc and also coples too..... coples and davis i heard wanted to go to the same school coples was here last weekend so id says ut had better make a real good impression on davis and let him change coples mind

My 2 cents worth is that of the three, Harris would be the man. If Southern Cal is considering him, that means one thing - fast!
Having all the heart in the world won't help you if you're trailing a tight end on an delayed out by 6 feet.
smokey90 writes:
stj I agree that Wadley's decision surprised me for the same reasons you describe.
However, the lack of DL commitments have caused me to ponder a 3-4 defense against the spread option. Does anyone think having more athletic linebackers and DEs chase down the likes of Tebow and cover receivers would be better suited than the 4-3? Just a thought.

sjt18 9:18 - good post - What has slammed the door on quality d-linemen coming to UT? Is it Chavis not liking to recruit or are they being told Chavis is leaving soon?
Something is keeping us from even getting many to visit. DT is the missing link in the chain of winning SEC Championships. What's up?
HotlantaVol writes:
Several of you mention coaching stability as a factor when choosing a school, but all the alums and fans calling for Fulmer's head the last several years raises much bigger questions about coaching stability at UT than Davis has on his plate. I would consider UNC too, if coaching stability was a priority for me.

I wished they wouldn't use the word "entertain" we've lost a few already over "entertainment" I do hope we get these 3, especially Davis (RB)
RoyaltyVol#280778 writes:
In recruiting (even at UT) sometimes things are done that shouldn't be, even money under the table (and yes its happened at UT) Sometimes its who is best at not getting caught breaking NCAA regulations. I believe Tennessee is as clean a university as they come (though not perfect) but I wonder if this is why some other universities are so good at recruiting, maybe they are just cheating!
99gator writes:
how do you have john henderson and albert haynesworth as former players and have trouble recruiting defensive tackles?
RoyaltyVol#280778 writes:
Does Tennessee try to utilize former players though like Big John Henderson and Albert Haynesworth to recruit defensive linemen the way that Peyton has helped in the past with QB recruits?
99gator writes:
sjt18
that's understandable, but usually a school has a certain appeal when former players excel at the nfl level. henderson and haynesworth are arguably the best 2 dt's in the nfl. every kid is different. but, i assume tenn would have an easier time recruiting that position because of the success of those two as opposed to another position
GerryOP writes:
While recruiting, my guess is that Fulmer is turning the alleged attacks on him into a positive. His line is simple:
"In the early part of the '07 season we were rebuilding the defense, the offense lacked some horses, had some key injuries, our QB was playing hurt, and we were evaluating many of our highly talented Freshmen. But, dang, we worked like heck and once we got everything back on course, look at what we did. We won five in a row, finished up the season 6-1 with the one loss by only one TD to the National Champs. And don't forget what we did to UGa while we were still rebuilding! Some of our Freshmen really stepped up and delivered -- and you can too."
Not a bad story! And you can bet your sweet bippy he is carrying copies of the "Vote Of Confidence" full page ad with him wherever he goes!
dburgVol writes:
Man I wish yall couldve seen Big John on the hs football field! He was a freak! Dyersburg played Pearl-Cohn in the state-semifinals in 97, Dburg was undefeated, but Pearl-Cohn beat them 41-7. Big John had like 17 tackles from the DE position, and a TD catch from the TE position. He looked like an NFL starter playing against middle school kids.
dburgVol writes:
J.T. Floyd committed to Michigan. I say good riddance. If you dont want to be a Vol, the feeling is mutual. He belongs in a slow conference anyways. Scout has him listed as having a 4.73 40 time.
smokey90 writes:
I am not sure if we are too far off on personnel for the 3-4 if we get players like Ward and if Gerald William ever see the campus. Of course "if" is a big word. Nonetheless, it would be a big change.
I think Chavis could devise a system, but I not know how the players would evolve. Every time I talk to a UT defensive player they refer to Chief as genius. I think the 2001 Florida game is a prime example of Chavis' creativity, but it also bites him in the rear. Many time his scheme are overcomplicated. He confessed this again this year, and he simplified things to good result. I sat directly behind him at the SEC Championship game and the defense only allowed one touchdown to LSU. He was livid and the player responded. Defense upheld their part.
But, where are the DTs? I do not know if there is a reason other than happenstance. Why go to Auburn with so many others? Maybe we will get Dareus? Any news on Dareus?
NoMoreWooAfterGoodOleRockyTop writes:
Maybe J. Banks and L. Coker will be this weekend's hosts.
99gator writes:
i have alway liked the 3-4, under the premise that it is a lot easier to find quality linebackers than quality defensive lineman.
however, the problem is.....you need an absolute beast to play nose tackle. without a great nose tackle on a consistent basis....you will have major problems.
GreerVol22 writes:
vol4jesus, funny how the only word in your comment "to article" was the word prospects.

sjt, we are a consistent #2 this year because THIS YEAR we lack a young, hyperactive "closer" that can relate to the kids. Fulmer relates to the Moms and Dads. With the newbies on the coaching staff, we may have one next year. But not this year. Of course, the overall coaching turnover is the big recruiting discontinuity.

Doesn't UNC have something like a 3 to 1 ratio of girls to guys? I dated a graduate from there once and she said something about that. That's not a bad selling point and could explain some of these guy's interest.

sjt I didn't think about the retirement and replacement after NSD. I maybe selling that coach short by not realizing his recruiting. I am sure he is a fine man, but I would like see impovement there. I believe we have the talent.

8 States border TN. (yes that includes MO) Look at the programs in those states. Look at the coaches. Here is the competition for talent:
Tar Heels
Clemson
Va. Tech
Ga. Tech (new coach from Navy)
Louisville
Mizzou
Now factor in the OUTSTANDING SEC schools and coaches.
We have the best of facilities, but our stock is down due to declining television coverage and "oh by the way" highlights on ESPN.
I have no doubt that we can stomp the teams I have listed above, however the kids signing now remember the losses to Clemson and Maryland more so than the National Championship. Eric Berry and that superb recruiting class came here to win championships. A buddy of mine heard him screaming that on the UT sideline to the other defensive players during the Cal game. I strongly believe that they will win championships. QB play will determine most of that.
Our kids have more heart than many of our past teams and they proved that this year against Kentucky and an SEC stretch run to end the season.
If we have to have a semi-mediocre year in recruiting this is the time. With the players we have in the stable it is PUT UP OR SHUT UP TIME!
This is our year to do something but we have to OPEN up our minds to football strategy. Clawson may be able to do that. I wonder how easy it is to get game film from his other teams. Even if teams do watch film on his former teams, the players we have will likely dictate new schemes. This is our time. If the new coaching staff can overcome the intensity that is autonomous to the SEC, I think we have a shot at being great. If we can provide a little flash on offense for the highlight shows, recruits will be flooding in next year.
smokey90 writes:
stj ah yes if I only knew then, what I know now. I agree I think some of the kids are either staying close to home or going where their parents went and so forth, but we get few like Berry because of his father. Hey, look what Travis Henry may do for us. His offspring may field an entire team.

ABRAMS WARD:
“Which one will give me the better chance to fulfill my goal to play in the NFL?” Abrams-Ward said.
Both schools are recruiting Abrams-Ward as an athlete with an emphasis on offense, particularly quarterback and wide receiver.
On Wednesday night, both schools had what appears to be their final in-home visit until Signing Day.
Butch Davis held his lone allotted in-home visit with Abrams-Ward last week.
“He just wanted to reassure what all the other coaches have been saying: the opportunity for me to play early, the asset I would be to the team, the team is hungry, and the goal isn’t to be mediocre and settle for mid-way, they want to be No. 1,” Abrams-Ward said. “They’re trying to win. They’ve got a goal and Butch Davis is trying

Butch Davis is a mercenary coach. He doesn't care about Chapel Hill and will jump at the chance to go someplace better. I remember a kid from Hampton, VA from around 97' or 98' who was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread. He was a two sport athletic star and the last time I heard he was scrapping the bottom of an NFL roster in Oakland. Point: Davis isn't going to play this E.J. at QB, though he might tell him he's got a shot. However he does have a shot to make a real impact in K-town. When we start putting teams like N.C, B.C. Wolfpack and Clemson on the schedule and beat them convincingly, we won't be concerned about competing with these schools for kids. What kids are we trying to beat out UCLA for on a regular basis? How about N. Illinois for that matter?

beazn I agree with playing NC teams, UVA and so forth. I went to the Cal game last year and that was a long way to travel. I could kind of understand that problem with tackling with jet lag.
Play closer to home. A talent in the ACC could be swayed to the SEC with convincing victories.
