Four Tennessee football players have been named to separate preseason awards watch lists.
Sophomore safety Eric Berry and junior linebacker Rico McCoy made the initial Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List.
Senior tailback Arian Foster and junior quarterback Jonathan Crompton, meanwhile, are in the early running for the Maxwell Award.
The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937. The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 to the nation's top defensive player.
Semifinalists for both awards will be announced in early November with three finalists for each being announced Nov. 25.

I agree, don't understand why Crompton is on the watch list, especially for the Maxwell.

I could easy see Crompton having a very good year..
Foster should have a monster breakout year..Heisman?!..I for one just hopes he hangs on to the dang ball!!!

DCflorida: Guys like you are proof positive that this site is #1 in America. Are the gator sites so bad that hanging out with us is better?
BTW lots of people make lists but few are chosen. Absent injury or legal problems I too would expect Trimmin' Timmy to be among the latter.

The Big orange offense should score some points..we are loaded at WR, RB, O-line, TE is only weak area, but isn't Warren on the roster
Our defense is weak at D-line, but...
with a experienced, all-SEC secondary..look for Chavis to Blitz, Blitz, Blitz.
man Mayo..why'd you have to leave?!?!

I wonder...
has a freshman ever won any of these awards?

Probably on there because he is at a big school in a big conference and that way, if he has a monster season, they don't have to answer why he wasn't on the list.

fumble returned for a touchdown by morley, cant wait for the gator bait.

Congrats and good luck to all four!

Tebow is very good at what he does. Crompton is unproven but let's at least give him the right to a trial by a jury of fans before we sentence him to life on the Quarterback's Avenue of Broken Dreams.
We will have a better football team this year. Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!!

And another thing. It's doubtful that Crompton has performed even one circumcision.

That's the kind of thing that could "shorten " a career.

posivol- could you give a different scenario rather than "Tebow diving for the end zone"!
We saw 59 points of that last season and other than an interception would have been 66.
Fulmer will hoist the Grail at the end of the 2008 season, Dupree told me so.
We are the University of Tennessee mediocres.

I understand the Gator fans hating on this. I mean even with Tebow, the Hiesman Winner, they couldn't win their Bowl Game, or even the SEC East.
TO the rest of you I will say this, we all remember Payton Manning and Payton was teh Chit. However Tee Martin stepped in the next year and we got our First NC in a long time, first undefeated season in I don't know how long, and the First BCS Championship ever.
Can we at least let Crompton fall on his face before we discard him??? He is a Junior, and I think he redshirted a year. It isn't like Ainge was the second comming of Payton!

DC,
No offense, Tebow only saw limited snaps in the season before he started, but he also won the maxwell award...you seem to be taking a holier than thou approach by saying that even though Tebow did it, that Crompton cannot...I'm not going to say that he can or cannot, all I'm saying is let the season play itself out before you start talking down other players on their team's site...Crompton was an extremely highly touted quarterback coming in just as Tebow was, but Phil has a seniority problem (unless it's glaringly clear that he cannot play an older player at their position)...so please save yourself from pulling those kinds of comments and expecting no one to respond on that team's site...

it would be nice to see tennessee put up 35 points a game or better and average 500 plus yards a game which i see very possible with all the talent on the offensive side ,if the line plays up to there potential ,i can see 200 plus a game rushing and maby 300 passing foster will break ut single season and career mark rushing the ball and the back ups will add atleast 600 or more and chrompton has a cannon and taking all the bsnaps is going to make him better
WorkinLikeHeck writes:
ballewville, sorry to call you out but I hope you realize that only about 5 teams on average average over 500 yards per game and then only about 15 or so average about over 35 points per game. DOing both of these would be extraordinary, not "nice" and hardly easy as "possible". Last time we came close to averaging over 200 yards a game rushing was 1998. I odn;t even konw the last time we average 300 yards a game passing if ever. I like the optimism though.

I can drink enough to hope for any one or two of these stats per but my liver couldnt handle the volume it would take for me to believe all those.
What the heck,I'll give it a try.I do have 59 more days.

Is Crompton's "watch list" predicated on being able to reach PP on 3rd and 6?
VOLinDAWGland writes:
Congrats to all our Vols on the watch lists and hope more make it as the season progresses. The fact Crompton is on it is a sign that some who know football are paying attention and the UT Vols are not as irrelevent as many on here would argue.
Go Vols!!! Please pass the orange cool-aid.

I would be willing to bet that these watch lists are put together from recommendations given to them by the various school's athletic departments. Tennessee, and others, choose in advance each year who they want to promote for awards...especially the heisman and all-america picks.
One of my biggest gripes with Fulmer's decision making is that he sticks with his favorite, even when injured, and has on several occasions not played the more talented player...many times to the detriment of the team's performance.
I can think of several examples. Ainge should have been replaced by Crompton last year and I remember Casey Clausen playing at least one game where he couldn't even throw the ball. Another one that stands out was Travis Henry finally getting the chance to play after Jamal Lewis was sat for an injury. I have to give Jamal credit for his abilities but he was not the same runner after his initial injury...he ran very tentatively. Travis was clearly better, but Fulmer was determined to stick with Jamal as long as he could.
I have always had the feeling that "he doesn't know his pass protection assignments yet,and he's not running the correct routes" is code for "he ain't playin."

Kingsport ..post July 3 10:45 p.m. very true,I blame CPF and Cut on this move. Crompton could of and should of been in more last year.Taking a look back Ainge was not the same after the huge hit he took in the back at the Cal game.Back and finger injury = short screen pass; bubble screen, end around, due to him not being mobile enough to throw down field.Could it be a total different situation this year with a new offense to learn, but I feel that is where we have the advantage of surprise. We will see, but this kid is as good as advertised,as far as the run ability take a look back at the LSU game when he hit the safety and four other LSU defenders to bring him down. So,YES, I feel they are all worth being on the watch list and Morley should be added too, he just might be before its all said and done.

If you start at QB for UT, then you deserve to be on the Maxwell watch list. No one said he is the favorite to win the award only that he is on the list. I get the feeling DC Florida is a little insecure about the game coming September and he should be.

One thing to watch for this year from super-Tebow is a change in how agressive he is running the ball. Last year he suffered a shoulder injury which was a major affect to the Gators offense.
This year by most suggestions is his last year of being a Gator. If that holds true Tebow will not be willing to risk such an injury as it could become serious and affect his draft placement and $$$$$.
If he does play with the "I'm not wanting to get hurt" mentality this will hinder UF's offense and other teams will pick up on it quickly. He has a great arm but his passing is aided by his running ability to keep the defense honest. UF will have to develop a running attack that has not been there other than Tebow to keep his passing % high.
If he becomes timid-Tebow trying not to get hurt it could become costly for the Gators. Don't believe for a second he isn't looking at the $$$$ of the NFL.

DennisVols- It would be great to think UT will not have to face Tebow in 2009 and I know quite a few Vols would like to think Tebow might take it easy this year to avoid an injury that would affect his draft money but after reading his history and appreciating his dedication to a higher calling, I would say there is almost no chance he will opt for the draft this year and it may not be better than 50/50 that he will ever sign a NFL contract.
