Berry, McCoy, Foster, Crompton on watch lists

Four Tennessee football players have been named to separate preseason awards watch lists.

Sophomore safety Eric Berry and junior linebacker Rico McCoy made the initial Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List.

Senior tailback Arian Foster and junior quarterback Jonathan Crompton, meanwhile, are in the early running for the Maxwell Award.

The Maxwell Award has been presented to the outstanding collegiate football player in America since 1937. The Chuck Bednarik Award has been presented since 1995 to the nation's top defensive player.

Semifinalists for both awards will be announced in early November with three finalists for each being announced Nov. 25.

I agree, don't understand why Crompton is on the watch list, especially for the Maxwell.

Gee. Maybe the "watch list" folks aren't as informed as a few of the poseter on here. I guess that's why. Here...try this...Congratulations to all..especially Jonathan Crompton since that was unexpected...but nonetheless VERY impressive. Now...try it.

I could easy see Crompton having a very good year..
Foster should have a monster breakout year..Heisman?!..I for one just hopes he hangs on to the dang ball!!!

DCflorida: Guys like you are proof positive that this site is #1 in America. Are the gator sites so bad that hanging out with us is better?

BTW lots of people make lists but few are chosen. Absent injury or legal problems I too would expect Trimmin' Timmy to be among the latter.

The Big orange offense should score some points..we are loaded at WR, RB, O-line, TE is only weak area, but isn't Warren on the roster
Our defense is weak at D-line, but...
with a experienced, all-SEC secondary..look for Chavis to Blitz, Blitz, Blitz.
man Mayo..why'd you have to leave?!?!

I wonder...
has a freshman ever won any of these awards?

I don't know if Crompton deserves this or not. I do know that he was a highly touted recruit out of high school. If im not mistaken a 5* ( I, know, stars and all) QB. If he lives up to his supposed potential, he could be very good. No one knows how he will play being the starter with another year under his belt and additional training from Clawson, another unknown. Maybe that's why the powers to be listed him.

Posted by utchris2003 on July 3, 2008 at 7:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Probably on there because he is at a big school in a big conference and that way, if he has a monster season, they don't have to answer why he wasn't on the list.

Berry, McCoy, and Foster should be on the list. I know Crompton should not be, and I'm a HUGE Cromton fan! Ramone Foster and Anthony Parker should be on some kind of watch list. This offense may do some great things behind this offensive line.

"The watch list candidates have been chosen by the Maxwell Football Club’s Selection Committee and the Maxwell Club reserves the right to make additions and subtractions to these lists as the 2008 season unfolds. All members of the Maxwell Football Club, NCAA Sports Information Directors, Head Coaches and selected national media are eligible to vote for these awards."

Please note; The selection committee is really ignorant. They simply have no information about the selections...they just take wild guesses...and out come the names...qualified or not. GoVolsXTRA has several posters whose "inside" knowledge trumps the selection committee. Please Pray for the ignorant morons on the selection committee and maybe one day they too can post here in an enlightened state of cerebral infallibilty.

I hope Crompton makes goats out of all you naysayers.

I, for one, see it as a positive that someone outside of TN sees him as a potential All Am.

Why be a neghead about the kid being on a watch list? How about being proud for him?

Go Vols, I hope every single player achieves beyond anyones wildest expectations!

I do hope you realize my last post was directed at the guys posting the ridiculous comments on here. The selection committee chose Jonathan for one reason. His potential. That potential is exceptional. Go Vols!

To be honest, Crompton may be a stretch, but he really surprised me with how good he looked in the Spring Game. I think Crompton will make some mistakes early as he gets some experience (should have been played more last year) but he will end up surprising some people. This kid can play. He made some throws in the O&W Game that looked like ALL SEC albeit against backup corners to be fair.

Chavis is on a watch list. Weight Watchers.

Posted by General_Watermelon on July 3, 2008 at 9:31 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I'll tell you something else, Foster (while he's made some heart breaking turnovers) has put up some huge numbers for his career. McCoy has the ability to be one of the best linebackers to EVER play at UT and that is a strong statement. It is not a stretch at all that he be on the list. Don't know if he will win it, but he sure deserves to be on the list. You can't name an SEC team he wouldn't be starting at LB for including Florida. Berry is the best player on the team in terms of talent. I wouldn't bet against this kid.

Tebow is very good at what he does. Crompton is unproven but let's at least give him the right to a trial by a jury of fans before we sentence him to life on the Quarterback's Avenue of Broken Dreams.
We will have a better football team this year. Go Vols!!!!!!!!!!!

Morely is another guy that was a 5 star who started as a Freshmen and who sat out last year because of grades. Based on what I saw on the O&W Game, he deserves to be on a watch list. He hits like Dale Carter.

posivol- could you give a different scenario rather than "Tebow diving for the end zone"!

We saw 59 points of that last season and other than an interception would have been 66.

Fulmer will hoist the Grail at the end of the 2008 season, Dupree told me so.

I understand the Gator fans hating on this. I mean even with Tebow, the Hiesman Winner, they couldn't win their Bowl Game, or even the SEC East.

TO the rest of you I will say this, we all remember Payton Manning and Payton was teh Chit. However Tee Martin stepped in the next year and we got our First NC in a long time, first undefeated season in I don't know how long, and the First BCS Championship ever.

Can we at least let Crompton fall on his face before we discard him??? He is a Junior, and I think he redshirted a year. It isn't like Ainge was the second comming of Payton!

DC,

No offense, Tebow only saw limited snaps in the season before he started, but he also won the maxwell award...you seem to be taking a holier than thou approach by saying that even though Tebow did it, that Crompton cannot...I'm not going to say that he can or cannot, all I'm saying is let the season play itself out before you start talking down other players on their team's site...Crompton was an extremely highly touted quarterback coming in just as Tebow was, but Phil has a seniority problem (unless it's glaringly clear that he cannot play an older player at their position)...so please save yourself from pulling those kinds of comments and expecting no one to respond on that team's site...

DCflorida, I believe the Maxwell will be given out for the 08-09 season for accomplishments in the 08-09 season. That is why at this point it is a WATCH list. It doesn't matter what he has done or not done to this point. Cutcliff seemed to have a personnel problem with Crompton. I believe he will be underestimated, and your statement about him not playing in Ainges place, is ONE reason why.

it would be nice to see tennessee put up 35 points a game or better and average 500 plus yards a game which i see very possible with all the talent on the offensive side ,if the line plays up to there potential ,i can see 200 plus a game rushing and maby 300 passing foster will break ut single season and career mark rushing the ball and the back ups will add atleast 600 or more and chrompton has a cannon and taking all the bsnaps is going to make him better

ballewville, sorry to call you out but I hope you realize that only about 5 teams on average average over 500 yards per game and then only about 15 or so average about over 35 points per game. DOing both of these would be extraordinary, not "nice" and hardly easy as "possible". Last time we came close to averaging over 200 yards a game rushing was 1998. I odn;t even konw the last time we average 300 yards a game passing if ever. I like the optimism though.

I would be willing to bet that these watch lists are put together from recommendations given to them by the various school's athletic departments. Tennessee, and others, choose in advance each year who they want to promote for awards...especially the heisman and all-america picks.

One of my biggest gripes with Fulmer's decision making is that he sticks with his favorite, even when injured, and has on several occasions not played the more talented player...many times to the detriment of the team's performance.

I can think of several examples. Ainge should have been replaced by Crompton last year and I remember Casey Clausen playing at least one game where he couldn't even throw the ball. Another one that stands out was Travis Henry finally getting the chance to play after Jamal Lewis was sat for an injury. I have to give Jamal credit for his abilities but he was not the same runner after his initial injury...he ran very tentatively. Travis was clearly better, but Fulmer was determined to stick with Jamal as long as he could.

I have always had the feeling that "he doesn't know his pass protection assignments yet,and he's not running the correct routes" is code for "he ain't playin."

For today, let's let loose of our team wars and who-is-gonna-run-smack-dab-over-who- for 60 minutes this fall and reflect on our freedoms and those who have given so much to insure that we have them. The men and women in whom "uncommon valor is/was a common virtue" that serve in harm's way today and those who have done so in the past. When you see a flag today, take a moment and pause and reflect on what it represents and on the courage and committment that has kept it flying over a free society.

Kingsport ..post July 3 10:45 p.m. very true,I blame CPF and Cut on this move. Crompton could of and should of been in more last year.Taking a look back Ainge was not the same after the huge hit he took in the back at the Cal game.Back and finger injury = short screen pass; bubble screen, end around, due to him not being mobile enough to throw down field.Could it be a total different situation this year with a new offense to learn, but I feel that is where we have the advantage of surprise. We will see, but this kid is as good as advertised,as far as the run ability take a look back at the LSU game when he hit the safety and four other LSU defenders to bring him down. So,YES, I feel they are all worth being on the watch list and Morley should be added too, he just might be before its all said and done.

Agreed about staring at UT. Then add Cromptons potential and we have a solid chance to see a fabulous offense. I hope the line can effectively run block and our average is around 160-180 per game. If it is the pressure is somewhat off Crompton and he can stand and deliver the football on play action. He looked great at the O & W game, albiet against less than stellar DB's. Offense should be more exciting for sure and give the defense some rest each game.

One thing to watch for this year from super-Tebow is a change in how agressive he is running the ball. Last year he suffered a shoulder injury which was a major affect to the Gators offense.
This year by most suggestions is his last year of being a Gator. If that holds true Tebow will not be willing to risk such an injury as it could become serious and affect his draft placement and $$$$$.
If he does play with the "I'm not wanting to get hurt" mentality this will hinder UF's offense and other teams will pick up on it quickly. He has a great arm but his passing is aided by his running ability to keep the defense honest. UF will have to develop a running attack that has not been there other than Tebow to keep his passing % high.
If he becomes timid-Tebow trying not to get hurt it could become costly for the Gators. Don't believe for a second he isn't looking at the $$$$ of the NFL.

DC, Crompton on the list isn't "silly". It may be surprising... but he is the starting QB for one of the big 3 in the toughest division of the toughest conference. If he does poorly then they can always drop him, right? I agree it is surprising and if it were my list he wouldn't be on it... but "silly"? Nope.

Foster and McCoy are stretches? Foster was projected as a 2nd round draft pick and chose to come back. He had about 1100 yards rushing and over 300 yards receiving last year. McCoy is most probably the best OLB in the SEC this year... if not the best he's in the top 2-3. Both deserve to be on those "watch lists".

Others that should warrant "watching": Brent Vinson, Dan Williams, A Parker, R Foster, J McNeil,... and maybe Lucas Taylor.

DCF: Naturally I disagree. Crompton came with extremely high expectations. Many believe he was (wrongly) denied playing time last year. Yet the expectations remain....thus, the watch list. What's the BFD?

DennisVols- It would be great to think UT will not have to face Tebow in 2009 and I know quite a few Vols would like to think Tebow might take it easy this year to avoid an injury that would affect his draft money but after reading his history and appreciating his dedication to a higher calling, I would say there is almost no chance he will opt for the draft this year and it may not be better than 50/50 that he will ever sign a NFL contract.

DC-
What's "silly" is pretending you don't care that UT won the East last year. It may be a "ghost championship" to some but I bet you would rather win it than not.

DC: I couldn't care less if JC is on this or any other watch list. I care how he plays this year and think he has a chance to be very good.

Timmy can hoist the Heisman, Maxwell, Best in Show, Best of Breed, and his favorite beverage simultaneously for all I care.

If the Vols have one more point than the gators at close of business on 9/20/08, I'll be pleased.

I think coaches and players have had a year to watch T-boy, and have figured his moves out. On the other hand Crompton has not been in the lime light for people to look at, he will have a banner year. Foster gets better each year! Barry and Macoy will kick butt! GO VOLS!
