Georgia suspends defensive end charged with felony
ATHENS, Ga. — Georgia defensive end Michael Lemon was suspended by coach Mark Richt on Thursday after he was arrested and charged with misdemeanor battery and felony aggravated battery.
Lemon’s arrest followed an alleged fight with another University of Georgia student on Saturday. Lemon allegedly punched DeMarius Jackson, who suffered a fractured left eye socket.
Georgia issued a statement which referred to athletic association policy that a student-athlete charged with a felony offense is given an indefinite suspension pending an investigation.
Lemon’s arrest closely followed the arrests of two players, offensive linemen Justin Anderson and Trinton Sturdivant, on misdemeanor battery charges on Monday night. The arrests followed accusations that they rubbed the stomach of a pregnant woman, Trina Bailey, without permission.
Seven Georgia players have been arrested since the end of the 2007 season.
“I’m certainly disappointed in a few of our players who have made poor decisions during the offseason,” Richt said. “It is of great concern and we take it very seriously. They will be dealt with accordingly and will pay a price. Each one will be disciplined based on the severity of their actions.”
Lemon, a sophomore, is a third-string defensive end. He was booked at the Athens-Clarke County jail Thursday morning and released on $2,500 bond.
Richt said that sophomore offensive guard Clint Boling will be suspended for the first two games of the season following an alcohol-related arrest in the spring.
Senior defensive end Jeremy Lomax, charged in early June with speeding and carrying a concealed weapon, has been exonerated of the concealed weapon charge.
Richt also said he is “extremely excited about what the vast majority of our team has been doing on a daily basis this summer.”
Richt noted “virtually every one of our players is giving back to the community this summer.” The coach listed his players joining a mission trip to Honduras and working on projects for Habitat for Humanity, at Camp Sunshine and other projects.
Richt said the football team posted a 3.23 grade point average in the most recent semester.

Georgia's first two opponents are Central Michigan and Georgia Southern.
Do they creampuff it for the first two games in anticipation of annual suspensions?

"has been exonerated of the concealed weapon charge." ?!?! Does that mean it wasn't concealed or did he have a bannana in his pocket when the cop frisked him?

Sounds like Richt's summer-term team building scavenger hunt wasn't his best idea ever.

Adams, you and your buddy Finebaum better get down to UGA to save the day before it is too late.

UGA needs to watch out for GA Southern. First off, their new QB won like 2 or 3 state titles in GA with Peach Co. HS and his old HS coach is the OC at Southern. Also, Chris Hatcher is coach of Southern. The Hatch Attack will put up big numbers like it did at UK and Valdosta State. Hatch'll have them ready to play Between the Hedges...

Good thing they are not opening with Appalachian State. But LSU is ... hmmm.

Sounds exactly like a statement from a coach on the Hill. Catch the last line. Interesting to see how this incident is resolved by Richt. Stayed tuned.

On the guy with the concealed weapon, it was weird. He had a gun under the seat of his car, so it was a concealed weapon. If he had had it in the Glove Box, or in the Center Console compartment it would not have been concealed.
That makes no sense to me, but that is what the Cops said in a statement.

"There but for the grace of God go I." Not so long ago, this was us. Wardlow waving his toy gun(he was exonerated too I believe), McDaniel breaking that guys jaw. It's sad that college athletes cannot take the gift of talent they have been given and keep their noses clean. How many of us would have loved to have their talent and the ability to play for our beloved teams? I know I would have. These "kids" need to be reminded that they are kids no longer. Coaches need to start handing out tougher punishment so they can learn they are living in the grown up world now where they face grown up punishment. These continual slaps on the wrist by the majority of college coaches just serve to send the message that there is no real consequence for your actions. It says those with talent are above the rules. It's time universities stopped sending that message. Representing your school and your team is a privelege. If they cannot appreciate that privelege, they need to be stripped of it. <sigh> Sorry for the rant, but I have grown tired of continually seeing these blessed athletes leading blessed lives and not appreciating it, while we common folk struggle by, trying to survive in a world where money has become tighter than my belt after Thanksgiving dinner! It's ridiculous, and I truly hope Richt and all the other college coaches(Fulmer included) come around and start dropping the hammer on these guys. On a lighter note though, being charged with rubbing a pregnant woman's belly? I guess you had to be there, but wow, that sounds totally ludicrous. Funny, but still ludicrous.

Just curious, LadyVols8.., where did you get the details on the weapons case? I'd be interested in reading the details on that one. Can you provide a link or reference?
Thanks.

DC...
I see where you are coming from regarding Richt, but I am one who thought the move was brilliant.
It really is not different when a team "delays game" in order to move back in an effort to "pin a punt", or in college, taking a pass interference penalty to avoid a big play.
Sometimes, a penalty is a good strategical move, and in that particular case, I KNEW Georgia was going to win that game, and I NEVER think UGA is automatic.
You never want to match another teams emotion/intensity...you want THEM to have to match YOURS, and for the 1st time in 17 years, UGA had the edge over UF

OrangePower11: Agreed, sir. It was pure strategery.

DCFlorida - I think if you took a poll, most Vol fans like Mark Richt better than Meyer. I could be wrong? I can tell you that I do. I think he is a great coach and GA sure looked like one of the best teams in the country at the end of the season last year.

DCflorida... Poochie, woochie, wooo-wooooo
When are you going to quit whining about that? You act like it was the crime of the century. It was a motivational gimmick and it worked. They hadn't beaten your Gators in awhile and needed the extra juice. Big deal.
"Especially the "old school" guys who believe in showing class and not showing up your opponents."
It is laughable for ANY Gator fan to talk about another team's coach not having class.

DCFlorida: Color me old school. Don't like any of that jive-azz crapola. But I do find it ironic that a FL fan would yell...Your coaches have set the watermark for classlessness the last 15 or so years. Cry me a river.

DC...
I dont get ANY pleasure out of seeing GA beat anyone, regardless of opponent. But being a "football" fan, I loved the move. I am not as "old" as some (28) but I do believe in sportsmanship and the like.
Funny you forget the air show your boy Visor put up between the hedges to hang the most points on them at home, WELL AFTER THE GAME WAS IN HAND. Very similar to what the Visor tried to pull against us in 99, throwing the ball w/a lead late (We almost made him pay)...
The only part of that scene I didnt care for was the player turning and taunting the Gators, I dont think Richt inteded for that (xtra 15 yds)
The look on Urb's and Tim's faces were priceless, literally like someone just slapped them across it, almost like "oh, Georgia came to play" and at that point it was too late, they were not gonna match UGA emotionally.
Were you up in arms all those years you guys went and stomped on FSU's logo, or tried to spoke Osceola's horse?

DC: You're far too steeped in Gator dogma to be objective. BTW, do you think you can come on this site and recruit allies? You need to learn (or at least fake) a little humility like 99.
Have a sunny 4th.

DC,
Allow me to clarify my view...
I believe Richt when he says he intended for the act to be ONLY about his team. He and his team were "calling" out UF. (Urb used those exact words) Richt even specifically commented on the player (I think #75) doing his little "taunt" dance.
I approved of the "team" celebration, he knew the penalty associated with such a move, and determined (in my opinion correctly) that the reward exceeded the risk. The taunt dance not only went outside the scope of "team" celebration, but landed them an additional 15 yds of penalty (30 total). His "individual" show is what I did not approve of.

BTW...
I agree FSU was just as guilty in the logo stomping incidents.
I am one of those guys who honestly has NO problem with a team running up the score, provided its done the proper way. The backups/3rd stringers work hard and deserve the opportunity to play when the chance presents itself. I dont have a problem with any of Spurrier's run ups, throwing the ball was his offense, and he was using 2nd/3rd's to run the offense. Those kids on defense on the other side of the ball get scholarships too, they need to play hard and to their highest capabilities.
I also am one who thinks there are serious life lessons to be learned from a beating like we took from yall last year.
I was only trying to illustrate that other teams can view certain acts any number of ways, when the only person who truly knows the intent is the coach, IMHO

If you read closely the AD suspended Lemon not Richt. He like every other coach in the conference will suspend or not suspend his players in a way that best suits him and his team.
