Christine Magnuson, who recently completed her final season at the University of Tennessee, missed out on a chance for a second individual swim for the Beijing Olympics next month.
After qualifying early Thursday for the 100-meter freestyle semifinals with a fifth-place swim of 54.70 seconds - her lifetime best - Magnuson swam more than a half-second slower and missed the championship final at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials at Omaha, Neb.
Veteran Natalie Coughln set the pace at 53.66, just .10 of a second faster than 41-year-old Dara Torres.
Torres, who was SEC women's swimmer of the year for Florida in 1987 and again in 1989, has won nine Olympic medals - four of them gold.
Magnuson, who won the 100 butterfly on Monday, was the 2008 SEC women's swimmer of the year after winning the 100-yard butterfly and 100 freestyle.
Kara Lynn Joyce, representing Georgia and 2007 SEC swimmer of the year qualified sixth for a place in the finals, .01 of a second slower than Magnuson's preliminary swim.
UT's Michele King qualified 45th in 56.33.
Magnuson and King will swim again on Saturday in the 50 freestyle.
UT's Michael Wolfe made it to the semifinals of the men's 200 backstroke, qualifying 11th (2:00.66), but finished 12th (2:00.04) in the final.
