Ramar Smith to play for Oklahoma City

Former Tennessee point guard Ramar Smith has enrolled at Oklahoma City University, according to sources close to the situation.

Smith left the Vols in April after two seasons. He will be eligible to play this season.

Oklahoma City has won two consecutive the NAIA Division I championships.

Duke Crews, who also left the Vols after last season, has narrowed his choices to Pittsburgh and North Carolina Charlotte.

Good luck on second chances. Not everyone gets a second chance.

Wow. Oklahoma City University. Hmmm... sounds like our football QB recruit who was recruited by Portland State. Hope it works out, guys. Wish you were still with us, but hey, you had your chances. Good luck in the future.

Wow...Duke going to Pitt. (possibly)!!
I'd hate to play the Panthers next year with him on the team as a backup!! Good luck to both of them!!

Who cares? They dont wear orange anymore, so who gives a s***!

Duke would be a great fit for Pitt if he can keep his nose clean. Good luck to both.

Pitt and UNCC sound great but I'm not sure how exciting OK City U is? Then again it might be the smaller the school the better for Ramar.

Judging by the headline my first reaction was, Oklahoma City SuperSonics for the summer league? Then I saw its not as flashy. But hope he makes it to the Association one day.

Chefjorge I agree. David Stern has turned the NBA into a joke. But they still continue to call him the best Commissioner out of all the major sports. What a joke. And don't even get me going on the words you can/can't use on this site. Not like we don't hear it or see it even in family movies/shows now days.

OKC ought to be able to call themselves the Sonics, as the Sonic Drive-In HQ is there! But, Seattle still has the name--maybe the NBA team will be called the Slushes? Go Vols! Go Spurs! SAVol

Ramar will be a good fit at Oklahoma City University. They play good basketball. He can get a good education here if he follows the right path and doesn't get in trouble. He might feel at home here as there is a building in the center of the campus that looks like a twin to Ayers Hall on the hill. It always catches my eye and makes me home sick every time I drive by. I will go watch him play this fall and winter. I'll wear my Tennessee colors and let him know I am pulling for him.

Oklahoma City is probably a good fit. Ramar doesn't have the overall talent to be a solid D-I player. How many player do without a jump shot?

Perhaps they don't care if you go to class at Oklahoma City.

eb502us - The place he picked has more to do with grades and admissions. Ramar has a lot of talent in basketball. He did have a Soph slump and his outside shot is not good (wasn't as bad as Bradshaws for example), but I thought he played as well as any "Freshmen" I've seen with the exception of a few like King, Grunfeld, etc.

Bradshaw has a good outside shot when he isn't injured. Hard to show it off when you are play pf against people half again your size and can't raise your arm above your shoulder

Ramar just couldn't get it together in Pearls system (which is surprising as it fit him well). Need to be able to make good decisions quickly, and Ramar couldn't do that.

His attitude was also very negative. Can't have that with a Pearl led team.

I wish him luck. He has some talent and should flourish at that level.

marc_ash - I can't disagree with you on Ramar, but I did think he played exceptionally well as a Freshmen and then it seemed he got lazy, in trouble, and bad attitude his Soph year. I still think he had loads of talent but apparently wasn't willing to work. Bradshaw mentions in his book that he had to call out a player or two in workouts for not working hard enough. He didn't mention them by name, but it makes you wonder if Ramar (or Duke Crews) might have been one of them? Maybe without Bradshaw, the players like Ramar just didn't have the drive to take their God given talent to the next level?

alfrizzle097 - I'm not sure I would call Bradshaw's outside shot good, but your point was a good one regarding his injuries causing his Sr. year to be horrible in terms of shooting. I should not have used him as a reference to poor shooting. And yes, He was one of my favorite players too. Who doesn't like Dane?

General_Watermelon...Ramar played as well as any freshman you've seen? While he played well, he certainly wouldn't ranking in the top 100 of all-time freshman in the SEC, much less the country. I'll forgive you for lumping greats like Ernie and Bernie with a guy who has a fraction of their talent in Ramar. I suggest you watch a little more basketball.

That is the same place Eric Manuel ended up when his Fed-Ex package did a slot machine imitation at the airport.

A few random thoughts:

Ramar probably wanted to play right away, so he picked a non D1 school where he is immediately eligible. He would have had to sit a year and get qualified academically to play D1 again.

I don't think grades were Duke's problem, so he will go somewhere in D1 and sit out a year anf then have 2 left to play. I hope he takes that extra time to get a degree.

Bradshaw is scoring pretty well in Europe, so I assume that he is shooting well now that he's healthy. We would have lost a lot more games his Senior year if he didn't play. I can't remember when he got hurt, but I think we would have made a deeper run this past year if he could have sat out a year and played point.

Good luck.. but with Bobby Maze you'll be forgotten quickly

What VolsRyourmaster said; I hope.

eb502us:
1) Maybe you need to learn how to read. I did not lump Ramar with King and Grunfeld.
2) I've played, coached, and refereed games. I probably have forgotten more than you know about the game. I've been watching Tennessee basketball since 1964.

voldom is improving; RSmith was/is/and will be a thug...as evidenced by his dogcussing of John Pelphrey. Hopson and West? This won't happen with them. Maze? Another thug problem with a fuse looking for fire.

Must be a drug legal and no academic institution.

Posted by THE_VOL on July 13, 2008 at 8:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)

itsme - partially right. Ramar was/is/will be a thug but it was actually JaJuan that was into it with Pelphrey. Maze - perhaps not a thug but definitely more interested in the name on his back than the one on the front.

Watermelon: don't even bother with eb...he comes on here about twice a month and posts the same thoughts every time. He's obviously in a prolonged coma.

And of course there's MARCY_GIRL: IF the Pearl systems requires that the PG "be able to make good decisions quickly" and "Ramar couldn't do that" then EXACTLY how the hell does the system "fit him well"???????? Another ignorant and glowingly MORONIC statement from the Queen Wannabe!

Ramar Smith was/is an overrated guy that needed to work his a$% off to get better and be a good D1 player. Problem is he is lazy and would rather smoke dope than go to class or play ball. He had no choice but to go NAIA as he would have been suspended for the upcoming season for failing his NCAA tourney drug test. His career will end in OKC!

Honesty from a vol fan: THE_VOL...appropriately named. Kudos.
