WNBA player Candace Parker accepts the award for best female athlete at the ESPYs Awards on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Candace Parker won two trophies at the ESPY Awards and Pat Summitt showed she can take on the professional coaches Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

Parker was selected female athlete of the year and female college athlete of the year. She led Tennessee to its second consecutive NCAA national championship before becoming the WNBA’s No. 1 draft pick and going to the Los Angeles Sparks.

“I’m just excited I got to meet David Beckham,” said Parker, who received her trophy from the English superstar. “I grew up playing soccer, so I love David Beckham. I was thinking, ‘Don’t trip, don’t trip.’ He’s truly an inspiration.”

Summitt, who won her eighth NCAA championship as coach of the Lady Vols, was named coach-manager of the year. Also nominated was Terry Francona of Boston Red Sox, Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants and Doc Rivers of the Boston Celtics,

The Lady Vols also won an ESPY for top women’s collegiate team.

The ESPY Awards will be televised Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPN.

bobcat, i take it that you're being facetious. Only a true vol fan would use her maiden name. :o)
What can I say. This was to be expected. Pat and Candace just keep raising the bar. It will be many years before anyone can surpass the abilities and lovability of Pat, Candace and the Lady Vols as a whole.

Winning these awards speaks volumes about what this program has accomplished. Even though the Espy's were contrived to market espn more, the awards have taken off and have become popular. Since the winners were voted on by fans, what does that say when Pat Summitt is coach of the year over pro sports teams, Candace is both female winners, and the Lady Vols are team of the year. WOW, indeed!

Its great to be a Lady Vol fan!

BTW, what awards did geno and Ucan't win? ha, ha!

Well spoken, Greer.

Now I just need a girl to scoot into that kitchen and make me some pie. Just kidding.

Well deserved honors, ladies.

I'll start by saying that Candace was pretty much a lock to win Female College Athlete of the Year, and rightfully so. Female overall athlete of the year was also pretty much hers as well.

The Lady Vols winning Female College Team of the Year was not a lock, but pretty damn close with back to back Championships.

Coach Pat Summitt winning the Coach/Manager of the year for Male/Female, College/Pro, Every Sport Period is just amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Completely deserved!! Yet I am all but unable to believe it was awarded to her. I'm not about to think parity has been achieved, or that this is the way it will be from now forward. It won't, which is what makes it all the more sweeter.

Congrats Coach, this is so well deserved!!!

Hot we don't mind making pies and cooking for a man.

It is just so damn difficult to find a man worthy of our efforts anymore.

(I have refrained from posting anything about how I hope Geno and the UCan't Fans are choking on this news. I refuse to go there.)

Way to go Ladies! It is great to see deserving people receive their just rewards.

It is always great to be a Tennessee Vol and Lady Vol, and it is great that others recognize it.

Very original givim6. Denmarkvol...I agree completely. I don't mind using 2 for "to or too" but sheesh, "their" and "there" are 2 different things. I realize that this is a chatboard but at least act like you have some edumacation!!

Things will be fine with nine in '09.

Congratulations to the Lady Vols Basketball program. From top to bottom it is the best. When a young lady signs with UT, they Head to the Summitt of their sport.

Anyone who cannot agree that Pat Summitt is not the best of the best is just plain ignorant or just plain jealous of her greatness.

Now, Matt, the blue sweater, what were you thinking? A tribute to Mr Rogers, maybe? A pipe and some slippers...

I think what bcbobcat82 is saying is that Pat and the Lady Vols are setting a bad example for Fulmer and the football team.

We Lady Vol fans are so lucky and I hope no one forgets that or takes it for granted. We have highs and lows but the highs just keep coming back and setting the bar higher !

Candace looks seriously hot! Sheldon looks like…well let’s just say that he waaaaay out-punted his coverage!!! If CP3 doesn’t get a ton of advertising offers because of that dress then we truly are looking at Armageddon right around the corner.

Seems to me every time Pat wins a title, she gets a coach of the year award, and considering she is close to 1000 wins and only 2 more titles from Wooden...so it's not quite as surprising. Yes she was up again major league coaches, but while they won a title, they don't have the longevity and record in their field to compare to Pat's dominance.

You hear that, Meano Geno?
D-O-M-I-N-A-N-C-E
(I hope I spelled that correctly, don't need the spelling police coming after me!)
