UT signee Price named high school female athlete of the year

University of Tennessee signee Chanelle Price is reporting to campus with one of the top honors in high school sports.

Price was announced Wednesday as the female Gatorade High School Athlete of the Year.

Pricem who wrapped up her career at Easton (Pa.) Area High School, is the first female track and field winner since world champion sprinter Allyson Felix in 2003. She is a three-time state champion in the 800 meters and recently ran the second-fastest scholastic 800 ever by a girl.

Price qualified for the U.S. Olympic track and field trials, but didn’t advance out of the qualifying heats in the 800.

“The Olympic trials wasn’t the best way to end the year. I didn’t run my fastest time,” she said. “But it was just a great experience. They said I was one of the youngest there.”

Price was fifth in the 800 at last month’s Prefontaine Classic, where her time of 2 minutes, 1.61 seconds was the second-fastest in prep history and bettered a mark set by former Olympian Mary Decker.

“I want to become a professional runner. I love it,” said Price, who received her trophy from Felix, 2004 winner Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks and retired soccer star Mia Hamm.

Felix, a two-time world champion in the 200, is headed to next month’s Beijing Olympics, where Price will be watching her and the 800 runners.

“She said she knows she’s going to see me at the next level,” Price said, “and when I get there, just remember to be cool and what is important to me.”

Quarterback Matt Barkley of Santa Ana, Calif., is the male athlete of the year. He will be a senior at Mater Dei High School.

Bluetick comment made in jest indicates he probably won't see a premier TN athlete perform on our track, nor will he have any memories when she or several others who before her, male and female, have become become best in the world. Tn is indeed fortunate to be able to attract world-class athletes in so many men and women's sports. And no she won't play defensive tackle or be forgotten on some 75 member squad.

jorido, the Vols have long had one of the premier track programs in the country, a fact I first became aware of in the late '60's as a Freshman. It is going to be great watching Chanelle's excellence during the next four years.

Welcome Chanelle! :) Congratulations on receiving the Gatorade Athlete of the Year award. Study hard, stay healthy, don't take performance enhancing drugs, and get ready for the 2012 Olympics.

It's great that you're a Tennessee Vol.

Like I said in an earlier post on these boards, Chanelle might be the best athlete we have ever signed at Tennessee. It is going to be exciting to follow here career at UT. Hopefully it will bring more fans out to Tom Black Track.
