Kelly signs with Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox signed their first-round draft pick Casey Kelly, an 18-year-old pitcher-infielder.

Team officials said Thursday that Kelly will be assigned to the Rookie League Gulf Coast Red Sox.

The recent high school graduate from Sarasota, Fla., hit .473 (44-for-93) as a senior with 13 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 11 steals. He had 77 strikeouts and walked 12 in 66 innings.

Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said Kelly will start his minor league career playing shortstop and will eventually be exposed to pitching. The 6-foot-4 Kelly had committed to play football and baseball at Tennessee before signing with Boston.

Kelly told mlb.com he was up front with Tennessee about playing baseball, and that he might not play for the Vols if he got drafted. He said Tennessee was supportive of whatever decided.

No real surprise here. I just hope we had a "Plan B" in place when we signed this kid since it was common knowledge baseball was his "money sport" and college football might not be the road he pursued.

As for Casey Kelly, best of luck in baseball and I hope you do well. As for the Vols, I hope a big-time QB recruit sees this as an opportunity to come to UT and compete for a chance to play early.

Go Vols!

BigV I think the commitment of two QB's already would indicate that UT anticipated this. Good luck Casey

Never know...may see him way down the road. Remember Chris Weinke?

Already knew this was happening. With Nunes coming in, it's all good.

Remember Kelly Washington!!!

gohawks1 writes:

My memories of Kelly Washington aren't as favorable as all that. Seems to me I remember a rather large ego and not as much performance. Didn't he miss the last part of his season with injuries?

What would Cooter have done in the same scenario?

naslov... u must not own a radio?

bobbarbilly writes:

Kelly Washington was a player with an enlarged ego problem who could not get across that chasm into professional sports on the baseball track and when he swapped rails to college football, Tennessee offered him a new bridge covered in orange paint called a stepping stone.

Tim Priest was an All-SEC defensive back in 1970 and his 18 career INTs is a school record. He did that in just three seasons as freshmen weren't eligible to play varsity ball in 1968. It seems that you nafslov are a bigger clown than you claim Priest to be.

sdye16#641965 writes:

Hey, Nafslov, you also must not realize that Priest still holds the record for career interceptions.

IndianOutlaw writes:

Hey
Volsfan/nafslov you are either wet behind the ears or just a little jerk. Tim as small as he was, was a hugh factor in many VOlS victories and could most likely kick your a== while not breaking a sweat and studying for the LSAT.
Buzz off or get you s=== right.
Love and Kisses from the Col.

Coming soon!!! Nafslov's new book " THE CONTRARIANS GUIDE TO TENNESSEE FOOTBALL". Just as soon as the editor gets a new spellchecker. He has burned out two already.

This is football nafslov, not ring-around-the-rosie.

I didn't know that it was.

I rest my case. Again.

Hope you made the right career choice Casey.Good luck.
We are still pretty much stocked at QB with Nunes on the docket.

Timed_vol (Inactive) writes:

still a smart move by ut to recruit and sign him. if he does give up bball, at least he may think favorably upon UT (and be a little older and stronger).

Greyback_Vol writes:

Shouldn't miss Casey Kelly much, assuming UT's 2 QB commitments for the '09 class honor those statements. If they do, the Vols seem to be set at QB for a while.

Lofton4Three writes:

nafslov has a problem seeing the real world through the bars on his windows.

mattlock writes:

Saying Priest was a wasted jersey is an example of wasted oxygen. nafslov, stop subjecting us to the dangers of second-hand stupidity by having to read your stuff, man.

bobbarbilly writes:

I kinda miss that'ol blatherskite Naf with the backward name when he is not around. I guess that I have developed a demented, detached sympathy for him and his twisted, tortured and pejorative opinion.

bobbarbilly writes:

No anger here Naf. All in fun. Go Vols!!!

Volgrad777 writes:

Dude nafs , again youre freakin Nuts , crazy legs Clausen was one of the best 2 or 3 QBs of all time at UT whether you like him or not , stats prove it , one game from the NC game. Get him the ball ??? Washington had 1000 yards recieving in a year you moron

VolGraduate writes:

good luck kelly. check back in few years if you want to try football again.

as for kelley washington he was good until the publicity went to his head. i bet the house on ut against florida in 02 (i believe) only to awake to washington on gameday calling himself "the future." i knew right then we were going to get killed that game and that washington's stardom was over.

same with hefney. he was good until someone told him he was good then all he could do is jump around like he was on a moon bounce after someone else made his tackle.

VolGraduate writes:

it's amazing how players with so much potential self destruct after having a good season. i can hardly comprehend it....washington, hefney, banks, coker, o smith...

VolGraduate writes:

nafslov: easy tiger on the bates comments...you may have a hit man after you for that one

Rev Wright -

Has one single black player in the history of UT football been a wasted jersey?

I'd be willing to bet you've never set foot in Neyland.

VolGraduate writes:

hahahaha....i'm sorry nafslov but i'm gonna have to check for your diploma now.

Waldorf writes:

So answer the question.

Waldorf writes:

Well, that's a start.

Ol Nav-Just stop posting. Then we'll be real easy on you. You can still read the blogs. You just irritate us by being negative about the program 95% of the time, then saying Go Vols. We would rather not have those comments in our face all the time. Call us homers or whatever, but we see the glass as half full. Workin just came out as a gator fan in disguise. If you really are a Vol fan, you'll see you need to make some psychological adjustments in your outlook when it comes to the Vols. You are not helping by bringing up all this negativity. It is time to change quiet down a bit, or be quiet all together. You are upsetting us a little bit. And although we can handle it, we'd rather not...Thanks and thanks for being a Vol fan. We need all the good ones we can get...
