UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel suspended starting strong safety Bret Lockett for the Sept. 1 season opener against Tennessee, the Long Beach Press Telegram reported Thursday on its Web site.
Citing sources, the paper said Lockett was suspended because of academics. He will be allowed to participate in training camp, and is expected to play in UCLA’s second game Sept. 13 at BYU.
With Lockett unavailable, redshirt freshman Glenn Love, the paper said, is the early leader to start at strong safety.
Junior cornerback Alterraun Verner, the paper said, is the only returning starter in the secondary after the Bruins lost safeties Chris Horton and Keyes and cornerback Trey Brown to graduation.
