UCLA suspends safety for Tennessee game
UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel suspended starting strong safety Bret Lockett for the Sept. 1 season opener against Tennessee, the Long Beach Press Telegram reported Thursday on its Web site.
Citing sources, the paper said Lockett was suspended because of academics. He will be allowed to participate in training camp, and is expected to play in UCLA’s second game Sept. 13 at BYU.
With Lockett unavailable, redshirt freshman Glenn Love, the paper said, is the early leader to start at strong safety.
Junior cornerback Alterraun Verner, the paper said, is the only returning starter in the secondary after the Bruins lost safeties Chris Horton and Keyes and cornerback Trey Brown to graduation.

UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel has been scouring the Southern Calif., area for months signing top players that the Trojans didn't sign..reports are that he has an array of new talent some better than the holdovers..one player suspension is not a worry. Rick you must recall when he was coach at Colorado played those great Nebraska teams in the late 90's head to head. With new offensive coordinator, Norm Chow on board, he virtually has a blue print of the Vols. ( Chow was offensive head of the Titans for years.) Don't look for a picnic in the park when Vols clash with Bruins Labor day, especially in the horrid heat of over 100 degrees that time of the year in Los Angeles.

Right Bigfan. I'm sure he's pulling blue-chippers out of the woodwork. BTW, it gets pretty hot in K-town that time of year too. Mid to high 90's only the humidity is at 99% most of the summer up there by the Smokies so it really drains the sweat right out of you. How does Norm Chow being the OC for the Titans (this was also relatively short lived BTW) give him a blueprint for the Dave Clawson/ Vols' offense again? What team is it that you are a big fan of again?

bigfan, just because Chow coached for the Titans does not mean he knows Tennessee's offensive playbook, especially since this is Dave Clawson's first year at Tennessee. The playbook of the Titans and the Vols' playbooks are most likely very different. And what does him coaching at Colorado against Nebraska have to do with anything? and yes, a one player suspension IS a big deal when you have one starter returning in your secondary.

ucla better be cautious i think our offense will be explosive, from what i understand clawson is not the conservative type. cuttcliffe was bland and boring great qb coach but he lost something when he went to ol miss. i look for big things out of our offense. of course you know joe thompson uclas def ends coach used to coach at william and mary , so he probably knows tennessees offense inside and out

Bigfan502 7:35 sssshh- this one's in the bag
Don't do anything to even remotely suggest that we even need to more than show up.
We'll flash our ghost championship SEC East shirts and our ninth annual no-ring rings.
They'll simply fade away.
Some need to reflect like geezers on the d-foundation we laid last year.
We go to war with the same ammo that got us to 84th in pass defense in 2007. Pshaaaw.
We'll be fine. Slurp!

Our secondary will be quite different next year, I believe Lindy's is predicting it to be #3 in the SEC. As far as the "d-foundation we set last year" comment, end of the season last year our defense stepped up even though our secondary was completely decimated due to injuries. I believe the foundation has been set for a surprising Tennessee season full of success. A lot of the SEC is writing us off next year as a weak team which may play into our hands if Clawson really has worked as much magic as I keep hearing he has with our offense. Many of our perennial rivals should be quite disappointed in the Vols new look next year!

volunteers4life..I too am expecting great things from our defense this year.If the chief can get Florida and Alambama figured out we will have a great year. It'll be a toss up with Auburn. He hasnt seen their spread concoction yet,but they shouldnt be as good at it as Florida.
utchris..I'm withya.Double that wager.

Everything IBleed Orange said at 7:52.
I refuse to take UCLA lightly, I remeber Air Force damn near owning us, especially in the second half.
For the most part I don't mid the partisan fans postings from other teams, but I hate it when they seem to have not a clue what tehy are talking about.
I just saw where Vanderbilt has hired Mickey Mouse. Mickey is giving up a great job in FLorida, however Vanderbilt offered big bucks as after 50 years MIckey has teh Gators playbook down pat.

Can’t say that I’m too worried about Chow since he isn’t getting 5-star “paid” players at USC anymore. What a great job he did with the Titans: 2005-17th in total offense; 2006-27th and 2007-21st. I’m pretty sure that is why they fired him and paid him a million to get out of town!
UCLA's CB’s Verner and Norris were 3-star recruits. Verner is a legit Corner but Love is a Special Teams guy that may start because he’s a Senior. SS Love was a 3-star recruit and the #23 Free Safety by Rivals but #47 by Scout. Aaron Ware at the FS position is the one to be concerned with. Although he was also a Special Teams guy, he was rated as the #8 Athlete by Rivals and the #19 FS by Scout. Both services had him listed as a 4-star recruit.
It will be interesting to see what JCromp can do if he has time against an untested secondary. I’d sure like to see Lucas, Austin, Josh, Jeff, Denarius, Quintin, Gerald and Luke burn the Bruins to a crisp

Orange Pants with White Road Jerseys would be awesome to bring back. I have never liked the white/white Good Humor Man look. We are the Big Orange and the Orange pants look great with the White. CPF needs to show that he has truly embraced change with the new look Clawsen offense and go with the Orange/White combo for the first time. But Orange/Orange doesn't work.

gnm53108 11:53 - good post - Chavis has figured out Fla and Bama, he just didn't have the horses to do anything about it.
Our investment was in our 38 DBs.
Kingsport 6:59 - I think they are readying the C5A Starlifter for the official Vol coaching staff for the Cal trip. It was handy last year due to certain coach's diets. The brochure says it can lift two Abrams tanks or the Vol coaching staff.
I think we'll wear the white with orange.
Just as long as we don't wear an azz whooping!

PD, I hope you are trying to relay sarcasm.
As the 50 + points levied on the Vols by Bama and Fla does not suggest that Chavis had the Tide and Gators figured out.
Who was the highest Vol drafted last year?
Oh yeah, Jerod Mayo, a fine MLB and the highest draft pic in years.
I don't think he was recruited as a DB.

I for one welcome the return of the orange pants. It's orange. It's an ugly color to everyone that doesn't love UT. That's the beauty of it IMO. The orange pants are loud, bright, ugly, and in your face, and there's nothing our opponents can do about it. I can't wait to cover Pasadena in our beautiful ugly shade of orange!
On another note, has anyone found a credible source with lines for the SC and UCLA games yet? I'm not buying those BS lines that were thrown out as fact. I searched and couldn't find a line anywhere.
