Without a doubt. There's a fortune to be made in merchandizing.

Why change now? Marketing should be able to handle the difference. Why not attack the black added to the football uniforms!! Give them a break already!

They have done a GREAT job represeniting and bringing more Championships to the hill than any other sport! Like it or not that IS the truth! GO LADY VOLS!!

what a stupid poll , I guess these sports writers that come up with some of these articles and polls are the one who makes minimum wage.
Next thing you know we will have a poll that reads drop the vols from the tenn name

What it is...its time to drop polls suggesting we follow the lead of Arkie.

In anything.

Well, maybe # of foreigners being trained to run track so they can represent their "own" countries in the Olympics. Arkie is great at that.

The Lady Vols have been our most consitent winners, especially our basketball Lady Vols. They have earned the distinction, and it would be ridiculous to even thinking of taking it away.
I am very proud of our Lady Vols. Just leave them alone and let them shine!

Posted by GreerVol22 on July 19, 2008 at 7:17 p.m. (Suggest removal)

not this again? any fool that thinks the Lady is disrespectful in any way has usually has father figure issues, a bad mullet cut, held ACLU membership drives or owned a VW at some point in their lives...there, for you people that need something to be offended at ...there you are.

Ladies Rock!

Posted by pdhuff on July 19, 2008 at 7:28 p.m. (Suggest removal)

GreerVol -7:17 good points, but easy on the VW. Had a '66 Beetle, carried me all over Europe.

Never owned or threw a mullet.

Another JERK trying to tear down an institution
that set the standard for women;s basketball.
Leave it to one in knoxville who is determined to crap in his own bonnet.

yep, lots of straight arrows own VW's but recent trends and those dang rainbows get me going.

Posted by bcbobcat82 on July 19, 2008 at 7:42 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Until recently with basketball, the Lady Vols have the the only program a fan could actually be proud of. A few years ago if I said I was a "Vols" fan people would have felt sorry for me and asked why? However, being a LADY VOLS fan is an honor and priviledge. I wish the women lib idiots would shut up. They make themselves look even more unequal to men by trying to be like one. Can you understand that? GO VOLS and LADY VOLS!!!!!!!!!

Posted by BigOrangeHustler on July 19, 2008 at 7:47 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If anyhting it should be changed to the Girl Vols.

Posted by andy112382 on July 19, 2008 at 7:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

There are some strange polls on here, that is for sure.

Whats next?

'Should the Vols change the color orange to something else?'

'Are the Vols going to want to go to a BCS bowl this year?'

Reminds me of when you hear on TV, the announcers say 'Well, they're going to want to get a touchdown on this drive.'..........Ya think!?!? I am pretty sure they would love one everytime!

Alright, enough venting, I just need it to be FOOTBALL TIME IN TENNESSEE!!!

Go Lady Vols !!!

Posted by bloodrunsorange on July 19, 2008 at 8:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This is America. Everyone has a right to have an opinion. I was a Tennessee Graduate twice when we brought in the Carolina Blue and the Prefix Lady for our University of Tennessee Women Athletes. I selfishly thought they’re not or never will be the men Vols and will never deserve the respect our men athletics have. They’re just girls draining money under title 9. That was then and this is now. I have changed my mind. We have ladies serving in our country’s armed services. If one loses her life in defense of our country we don’t think of her as a Lady Army or Lady American. We think of her as Our Army and one of Our American Soldiers. I have a Lady Vol daughter that I am very proud of her. To me she is a UT VOL. I know how hard she has worked and trained. I believe she deserves my and your full respect as a UT Volunteer. She’ll always be a Lady and a great representative for our University. In my opinion we have Americans not German Americans, Irish Americans, Mexican Americans, African Americans, Men Americans, Women Americans, etc… Our Female athletes do, will, and should deserve our full support and respect no matter what the marketing people want to call them to sell more stuff. It’s just my opinion and after looking at the poll, I’m very much in the minority. That’s OK too. I’ll love the female Vols and the male Vols no matter what they’re called. One more thing, “Punkin” you did GREAT as a Lady Vol, we’re very proud of you!

How bout Volunteeretts? Who gives a rats a^^ about women trying to play basketball. Ok , I'm ready for the flack!

Did Dupree get to vote in this poll since he must be the one who thought it up?

Posted by gregory_clark on July 19, 2008 at 9:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why isn't "Who cares?" a choice.

Really, who cares?

Posted by pammyvol1000 on July 19, 2008 at 9:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Why change a good thing? Nothing wrong with Lady Vols.. I say we keep the Lady and let others do whatever they want. Why make a big deal out of this!!

Posted by NOLAvol on July 19, 2008 at 11:01 p.m. (Suggest removal)

There might have been a time when "Lady" Vols sounded not-as-important-as, weaker-than, not-as-intimidating-as "regular" Vols... but 8 National Championships and on-the-way-to 1000-wins later, the girls and THE lady have made "Lady Vols" more intimidating to opponents than anything the Marketing Dept. could ever design on paper!

Even a name like "NappyheadedhoVols!"

(...someone was going to say it sooner or later.)

Posted by NOLAvol on July 19, 2008 at 11:06 p.m. (Suggest removal)

This suggestion just received from the UT Genetics Department:

"XX Vols" ... "XY Vols"

Why does an institution need to be tweaked?????? People with toooooo much time on their hands...?

Only if you cathing them peeing standing up.Free TDTN!!!

Posted by BillVol on July 20, 2008 at 12:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Keep in mind this isn't a scientific poll.

Posted by andy112382 on July 20, 2008 at 12:38 a.m. (Suggest removal)

bobbarbilly, I think you hit the nail on the head about too much time on their hands....

Or, people who don't know anything about prioritizing their to-do list. Kind of like in San Francisco, they meet to OK putting on the ballot the option of renaming a sewage treatment plant after Bush, yet, I am pretty darn sure they have many more things to be spending their time and money on in a whacked out place like california (sorry to any CA natives here, but lets face it, they are a tad strange out that way)

Posted by 98reax on July 20, 2008 at 7:33 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Do not mess with The Lady Vols. If it aint broke. . .

Posted by 98reax on July 20, 2008 at 7:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Could be time to remove the word 'News" from Knoxville News Sentinel.

I only voted no because there wasn't a ^@!#!@! No button.

Dittos to 98reax. News Sentinel is two lies for the price of one!

If anyone wants to know how I feel, just recall Greervol's, kingsport's and 98reax's comments. They have my proxy for this article. Nuff said.

Posted by SFOrange on July 20, 2008 at 10:31 a.m. (Suggest removal)

why drop the "lady", because some people find it sexist or segregationist? huh? seriously, its 2008.

one thing UT should drop is having two (2) websites for its athletics programs (utsports.com--horrible, utladyvols.com--better, but bad). Its time UT steps into the 80's and consolidates and upgrades its online offering. UTAD--think cross-sell on the same site!

Now what Idiot came up with this dumb idea.

Posted by volfan on July 20, 2008 at 2:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

no.nein, nyet, nix, nyah, nope, nay, and if given an hour or two, probably this old 77 year old brain could come up with one or two others. I think that the words LADY Vols brings dignity to a well deserving program. If Arkie wants to call themselves hogettes, pretty porkers, shining shoats, elegant elts,
swinging swines, boar's beaus, lady hogs, swineettes,or since the logo for the razorbacks highlights the head of a wild hog, why not use the other end of the hog and let it represent the arkie lady athletic teams...nyah, didn't think so! Lady razorbacks seems to fit the best.

Go L A D Y Vols!

Posted by marc_ash on July 21, 2008 at 8:23 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Why would the "lady" need to be dropped? The big question to ask, is who was the idiot that brought this question up (not the poll question, but the issue of whether or not the "lady" should be dropped).

Not to sound sexist...but I bet you the person that started the issue wasn't a man.

Look, the Lady Vols are a great program. Keep the name, they are the Lady Vols.

Me(back in college talking to my roommates girlfriend)-Carrie, you throw like a girl.
Carrie-What? Shut up you jerk. I do not!
Me-Um....yes you do.
Carrie-You're an @ss hole!
Me-But...you...are a girl.
Carrie-Oh shut up!

Posted by DandyVol on July 21, 2008 at 9:14 a.m. (Suggest removal)

What a stupid question. Well KNS. What would you rather call them? Maybe something like the "Vol B***hes" to strike terror into the hearts of all foes? Get a life. I agree with most of the other posters. The "Lady Vols" have become an icon. They are known by anyone serious about basketball. Just the thought of having to play the "Lady Vols" will give foes nightmares. How about the next KNS poll. Shall we change the name of the "Vols" to the "Gentlemen Vols"?

Posted by volboy81 on July 21, 2008 at 11:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I guess the poll answers that question!
The Lady Vols are without doubt, the most recognizable womens athletic dept in the country...for a reason! Dont mess with success!!

Political correctness-its out of control!!! I like the name LADY Vols sheesh!! In the words of Charlie Brown "Good grief"

Tngeoff said it all.I don't understand how anyone can take offense at the name Lady Vols-unless they aren't ladies themselves.Jealousy is sooo shallow.

Posted by mparker on July 21, 2008 at 7:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)

nothing wrong with being a lady. hell, I wouldn't care if the men's terma wre the 'gentlemen vols'.

Posted by Volfantm on July 21, 2008 at 7:29 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What they are called should be up to the women playing the sports, imo.

Posted by volnut1 on July 21, 2008 at 8:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

When something (like the LADY VOLS) is not broke-do not try to fix it. They are the best in the nation for 2 reasons THE LADY VOLS and in basketball LADY PAT SUMMIT- without a doubt the best coach in the nation-leave it alone and find something that needs to be fixed.

Posted by cat54 on July 22, 2008 at 10:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Crazy poll! Don't forget, Lady Vols includes more sports than just basketball. We have a lot of talented young women who swim, dive, golf, play softball, run track, etc. They are also Lady Vols!

Posted by slothslayer on July 24, 2008 at 6:50 a.m. (Suggest removal)

When I read this headline, my first thought was why now? Usually, for a change like this to occur, there is something that happens to precipitate it, but I don't see that. What? You have to win 8 National Championships and consistently have one of the best teams in the league for over 25 years to be included with the guys? No offense to the guys, who have recently started giving us something to be proud of, but I don't WANT my Lady Vols lumped in with the guys. The Lady Vols have consistently competed harder and better in most every sport. Here's my vote if someone has a problem with the "Lady" in Lady Vols - how about replacing it with "Winning" or "Actually Competing" or "Kicking butt" instead?

Posted by teddybear on July 26, 2008 at 4:58 p.m. (Suggest removal)

why be so stupid. the lady vols basketball team is the winningest college basketball team in history and pat summit has more wins than any college basketball coach in history. only an idiot would want to change history when it is this famous
