Tennessee football 2008: Defensive backs
Loaded secondary has 'chance to be outstanding'
Arkansas tailback Michael Smith, center, is tackled by Tennessee’s DeAngelo Willingham, left, Eric Berry, second from right, and Antonio Reynolds during last season’s game at Neyland Stadium.
Inside the secondary
POSITION COACH
- Larry Slade
PROJECTED DEPTH CHART
- SS: Eric Berry (DeAngelo Willingham, Anthony Anderson)
- FS: Demetrice Morley (Daryl Vereen, Vince Faison)
- CB: Brent Vinson or Dennis Rogan (Antonio Gaines); Marsalous Johnson or DeAngelo Willingham (Art Evans).
WATCH OUT FOR
- Battles for the starting job at both cornerback spots, where four players with starting experience are in the mix.
KEY STAT
- On his five interceptions last year as a true freshman, Berry had a school-record 222 return yards and also returned two fumbles for 55 yards.
If anyone questions how good Tennessee's secondary can be, just ask Josh Briscoe.
The senior wide receiver has gone up against those players all summer long in seven-on-seven drills, and he can attest to the supreme abilities of safety Eric Berry and the rest of UT's defensive backs.
"They're real talented," Briscoe said. "Having Demetrice (Morley) back helps out a lot, too. He's a great athlete. With him and EB, I think we have the two best safeties in the country."
Berry, a freshman All-American and second-team All-SEC selection as a true freshman, and Morley, a Parade All-American who started 10 games in 2006 before missing last season because of academics, give the Vols one of their best safety tandems in school history.
And a deep pool of players at cornerback (four players with starting experience will battle for two starting jobs) could give the Vols one of their best secondaries ever.
"I think potential is a good word," defensive coordinator John Chavis said. "Potentially, we have a chance to be outstanding."
Thanks to Morley's return, Tennessee shouldn't miss a beat despite losing free safety Jonathan Hefney, who started 50 career games.
Behind Morley at free safety is converted running back Daryl Vereen, who made a quick transition to defensive back during spring practice. Behind Berry is DeAngelo Willingham, a potential starter at cornerback and former Austin-East star Anthony Anderson.
But the Vols' biggest source of depth is cornerback.
Senior Antonio Gaines returns after missing UT's final 12 games with a knee injury, while junior Marsalous Johnson is back from a knee injury that caused him to sit out UT's final seven games.
Regaining those starting jobs, though, won't be easy.
Due to injuries, the Vols started five different players at cornerback last year before finally settling on true freshman Brent Vinson and Willingham, a junior college transfer, for the final seven games.
Those four players and sophomore Dennis Rogan, who played considerable snaps as a reserve last fall, will battle for the two starting spots.
Regardless of who starts, the Vols will have plenty of depth, plenty of experienced defensive backs. And plenty of options.
"It's been two years running that we've not been able to put our fifth and sixth defensive backs on the field," Chavis said. "Coming out of spring practice, we feel very confident that we can do that."
That depth and talent should allow the Vols to bring more pressure from its linebackers and play more man-to-man coverage. The Vols even had some success late last fall, particularly against Kentucky, blitzing out of their five defensive back package.
While Tennessee is deep at cornerback, the strength of its secondary looks to be Berry and Morley.
"I think that gives us two really good players at safety," Chavis said. "And I'm not sure since I've been coordinator here that we've had a pair of safeties that are as good as these two or as good as these two can be and we expect them to be."

The great thing about this time of year is the "preseason talk".
Unless you perform on the field, this "talk" will come back to haunt you. I remember the preseason of 2005 and how much talk there was about how good we were at EVERY position. I'm sure you can recall how that year went.
Can't wait to see it on the field. I hope it's our time in Big Orange Country.

Berry and Morley are gifted athletes....and our cornerbacks should be OK as well, however, even the best cover people need a consistent pass rush. Will we have a consistent pass rush from our front 4.

Morley and Berry are good, but its premature consider them the best pair of safety's that Chief has coached, considering Fred White and Deon Grant played together on the '98 team.

When Eric Berry ran the interception back against Florida it was the best defensive play we have had in.......well, a long time. It kept us in the game, albeit for only about two more minutes......But it was electric. And if Morley has turned it around..........We will shut some teams down. Word. Bring it...own it...know it......Leave it all on the field.......Thanks for coming out.

Who in their right mind would want to go over the middle with EB and DeMo bearing down on them? We're going to see a lot of WR's in the second half of games with alligator arms. There will be a lot of snot-bubbles and slobber-knockers coming off of opposing WR's this season!!!
Posted by el_duderino on July 21, 2008 at 2:25 a.m. (Suggest removal)
They're the best tandem we have on the team. Both guys are great athletes and good guys. DeMo is back on track and is determined to make the best of his time at UT. He's eager to get on the field and start winning. I think this is something that is circulating throughout the entire team... September 1st couldn't come soon enough.

We should have enough depth to withstand injuries to key players. We never recovered from Inky's injury in the Air Force game a few years back. DBs play a high-impact, high-speed game, and they sometimes have to hit somebody much bigger than they are. So, hit 'em low, wrap 'em up, and hold on long enough for teammates to get there. Whatever some of the other posters may think, Hefney was durable enough to play in 50 games! Oh, I think that Eric will help keep DeMo from getting burned deep, as happened to him two and three years ago. Go DBs! Go Vols! SAVol

"That depth and talent should allow the Vols to bring more pressure from its linebackers and play more man-to-man coverage."
Playing man is the key. We haven't been able to do that in years. Are we good enough now?
If so, I expect some picks. I also expect some three-and-outs for opposing offenses.

Good read at Tennessean.com - click sports - Chow.
What a sweet deal he has. Dang.
If we don't leave these talented DBs on an island for a 4 count, they should produce.
Heaven help us with no d-line push.

If these DBs can cover for a 3-4 count than our DL should get the required push...it works both ways.

nafslov or RB Sheffield, STFU about Karl. When's the last time you played D-I football? That's right, never.
Posted by General_Watermelon on July 21, 2008 at 7:54 a.m. (Suggest removal)
VOLinDAWGland is correct. Our DL is not getting the push the past few years and that puts more pressure on the secondary. Hopefully the faster DE's will make a difference and Mr. Bolden will realize it is his last year to make an impact for a possible NFL look.
Morely and Berry will flat knock your head off coming across the middle. I witnessed this first hand in the O&W Game. The backups at safety are fast but very inexperienced so it will be important for these two starters to stay healthy.

nafslov - Hefney looked like crap his Sr. year and you want to blame that all on Karl?
Posted by Cherokee on July 21, 2008 at 7:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I'm as excited as anyone about the potential, but the comments about a secondary being as good as its pass rush are on target. A weak pass rush can make a great secondary look average, and an average one look really bad.
Also, IMO it would be a good idea to cool all this talk about the best pair of safeties. Morley is a very talented player who as as a freshman was often out of position. That's not all his fault, as a learning curve was to be expected, but let's just see how the season goes before we anoint he and Berry as the best pair in the land.
Posted by 55Vol on July 21, 2008 at 8:13 a.m. (Suggest removal)
nafslov.... Heffney was a step slow and out of position most of the time last year. Ask Florida. As for Karl, he would unjock you in a heartbeat.... now if you were to suit up, talk about a wasted jersey...
And pdhuff.... no dline? some may be drinking koolaid but what are you smoking? No dline??? We may have issues next year but no dline? If you base that statement from early last year, yes the guys were learning SEC football. But by the end of the year, they learned. Get off the fritters and see these guys for the men they have become.
Build a wall and hunt them down ..GO Vols
Posted by General_Watermelon on July 21, 2008 at 8:18 a.m. (Suggest removal)
55Vol - I actually like Williams but Bolden doesn't play every down. If the coaches could get him to play every down like he's capable, UT would be HUGE in 2008. The DL depth is also very suspect which is why everyone on here has asked why Fulmer, Chavis, and Brooks are having such a tough time landing quality DT recruits for next season. The recruits would be looking at immediate playing time. How many schools as good as UT can offer that?

Cherokee - I hear you, but did you see Morely in the O&W Game? He looked like Dale Carter.

Morley was out of position alot, but his style reminds me of Samari Rolle (sp?) who played for the Titans. He'll get burned a few times, but he'll make an equal number of spectacular picks because of jumping a route.

Gatorintheknox,
Unfortunately she knows more sports than Mickey and the Ohio St dude. It is not a sports talk show in that sense, it tries to be a comedy show and falls short of that too. Mickey is actually a very good basketball announcer, but knows very little about other sports. Heather has other "assets" that keep her on the radio. She is very nice in person if you see her out and about.
Back on topic, all DB's have one more year experience and should be strength of the defense. I hope our corners can play more man to man because we are going to need to blitz our LB's to get a pass rush. How many days??

I am glad Drew Edwards writes for KNS. If he didn't, I'd have very little quality material to read about football - the board here is much more informative than the writers in most cases. Let me explain. He actually reports on "new" news and not "old" news. He doesn't go out of his way to make the best fans in the nation mad. He just reports the news. I suggest the Tennessean(Nashville) on days like this - when we get a sports editor that is smugly trying to reopen past wounds. I am not saying he(the sports editor) is right or wrong - just same old story line w/ boring take. At least Drew is writing about sports and not rambling and trying to settle old scores. Vote w/ your feet or in this case...your mouse. Our choice is not to post on columns that are petty and lack substance. Post on columns like these that at least report the news.

nafslov, we don't really know who from last year has deep speed since Ainge's hand and shoulder injuries prevented them from going down field.
Rogers is supposed to be fast. Trooper even called him one of their better deep threats last year... I'm not convinced one way or another based on what I've seen.
He made some tough catches along with making some drops... something to be improved on but hardly the constant problem that some suggest.

I think before you are coined as the greatest player of the era you need to have a legacy first. So far, the only thing Tebow has as a starter is a missed opportunity at playing in an SECCG and an embarrassing loss in post season.
Look, nobody is arguing Tebow isn't amazing. However, let him prove he is the best before handing him that crown. I'm sure Michigan would think otherwise.

General @ 0837, I can think of a couple of wasted jerseys from black players very quick. Antonio Reynolds, Jarrod Parrish, and Corey Anderson to name a few!! Hopefully we will see some coverage sacks along the way to help out the D-line. Should see more sacks due to better D-line, plus more due to better coverage. Hopefully the combination will put us back up to the 35-40 sack range on the year. If not then 20 or so sacks will have to do it, and we all know that aint gonna get it!!

TJ-
Let's not fudge the numbers to make UT sound like we were worse last year than we really were. Of those 74 points given up to Kentucky and Vandy, 50 of them were given up to UK in 4 OT's. UK had a very explosive offense with a great QB and we won both of those games.

Gen W: lol
Turbo: I agree with DaddyVol. I didn't realize they had to start in order to be classified as wasted. I figured that if someone wore the jersey and didn't live up to expectations, they were a waste.
That jersey could have gone to someone who may have contributed, which Brooks didn't.
For Clarification:
Kids who are 2nd and 3rd teamers are not wasted jerseys when they play to the best of their abilities, do their academic work, and are good citizens, and contribute, ie. Jim Bob Cooter

grvol, you nailed it!! Not only did our pass rush stink last year, but the other teams just had to snap it and throw it. 10 yard cushion is being nice, a couple of times D.J.Hall lined up and you could not see a Vol in the TV screen that was responsible for Hall. Kinda made you wonder if anyone was on him at all. Then as he run a 50 yard fly pattern, our DB would appear 40 yards down field. Never seen a scheme where you give a 40 yard cushion to reciever but can't stop 40 yard bomb until last year, Chavez may want to get a patent on that. Things should be much better this year though, hey if it goes really well I may actually quit riding Chavez's A55 for a while.

"If you base that statement from early last year, yes the guys were learning SEC football."
55Vol, the secondary was learning on the fly, not the defensive line last year. Bolden and Williams were juniors along with Ayers. Reynolds, Mitchell, and Mapu were seniors and Fisher was a juco player. These guys had been around long enough to know SEC football, they just couldn't excel at it.

Sorry, I have been on vacation and don't know what all has been thrown around ,so this will be a little long.
Word is Bolden has shown real dedication in the weight room, and has broken a couple of records set by "Big John" including the bench press.I really think he will have a break-out yr.Why?In NFL terms, he is in a "contract yr".Literally.Fisher has really been pushing Bolden & Williams telling them both he wants a place at the table. The secondary will be good, but how good will be decided by the front 4.
Recruiting notes over the last week:
Twins Jamil & Jamal Merrell of (DE) have both said Tennessee is the school that sticks out the most.Jamil is a 6'4 215lb 3* DE and Jamal is 6'4 197lb 3* LB.Both said it was their best visit. They are a package deal.
Nigel Mitchell-Thornton ,the 3* ILB of (GA) has said UT is his leader. What?Chavis recruiting?
Thornton:I really like my recruiting coach there (John Chavis). I like the fact that he coaches the linebackers and is the defensive coordinator as well. He has a lot of history of bringing linebackers to the NFL. Tennessee has kind of become 'Linebacker U'."
David Oku, the 4* RB of (OK) has said Tennessee has made his top 5, and he will make an official the weekend of the UF game.Yeah ,him and half of the other guys were recruiting. We will battle Nebraska,Michigan,Illinois, and FSU for his services.
As expected Jerod Askew, the 4* LB of (VA), has named us in his final 5.We will battle Bama,WVA,South Carolina, and Maryland. He has also said Chavis is a big factor, and also dubbed us linebacker U.
We have about 11 spots to fill. The scary part is that so many have named us in their top 5.The staff will probably have to start backing off a few guys.

I think we'll see an upgrade from the DE position which will make more opportunities for the DB's to make plays. Ayers should have been starting last year IMO and Martin will have a chance to show what made him such a highly touted recruit. Throw in Brown if he can stay healthy, that should substantially increase the speed off the edge.
Either way, the secondary is easily a strength for the team. They are deep and talented across the board. I would love to see Berry get the chance to be another Charles Woodson. He was 2nd all time to the SEC record on interception return yardage and has ability in the open field with the ball in his hands.

SavageO, I hope you're right and Bolden has dedicated himself, we sorely need a strong presence in the middle besides Williams. The other issues are whether he is dedicated to his team and the classroom as well. Physical talent hasn't been the problem IMO.

invisiblekid, you're correct sir.Talent has never been the issue, it's his attitude.Brooks said he really hopes Chase Nelson is the guy that steps up behind Bolden,Fisher, and Williams.Alot of people say he has all the talent in the world, but hasen't developed that old school meaness that Brooks loves.

Savage, GREAT to have you back bro!! I've heard the same thing about Bolden. I also heard that he has been a bit more dedicated to his grades. Actually I think Niki Anosiki helped open his eyes to the great opportunities that he has both on and off the field. I think he will be a BEAST this season, if he is not out there 80 plays a game. I expect Chris Walker to be the Silent Killer this season off the edge. Not heard much about him but think he will be productive speed rusher.

Savage. Appreciate the info.! It's shaping up to be a very good year in recruiting indeed.

"Spanked them in the mouth" huh? Sounds so dirty!

This Askew kid is the one I want. A linebacker that makes a 4.7GPA. That would give us a LB with a higher GPA than our QB (NUNES) who has a 4.6GPA. Our players GPA's are looking loke some players 40 times, NICE.

DaddyVol ,thanks, glad to be back.I also heard he is doing well academically, and that people that have been around him say he seems like a totally different person.Ayers and Brown will also help to prevent double & triple teams on Bolden. The D-line will be ok, but must stay healthy for us to have a shot.
BornNBredAVol, good work.tngeoff posted this one a while back and it's one of my all time favorites. It's from the 06' game.If you haven't seen it ,I think you'll like it.

on the subject of recruiting, the crowd plays a big factor on the gameday experience of a recruit (which is a big deal to high school kids) and the crowds is not just about size of the crowd but how loud and intense the crowd is throughout the duration of the game, we are unfortunately beat by some schools in that regard. our fans tend to get kind of quiet at times (some dont even yell the entire time) but we need to be loud (the entire stadium)for the whole game if we want to truly have the loudest stadium in america, even louder that LSU and Florida's, (my high school's LB coach played at LSU and said that Death Valley is louder than Neyland, although he is a die-hard UT fan now) so landing better and more recruits could be helped by having a louder more intense crowd at the games

BornNBred-
Wow, coach played at LSU and is now a die-hard UT fan! What a turn coat! He should be ashamed.

IBleedOrange-
he said what changed him was running thru the T (he's a strength coach at UT also)

I wonder if Mikey spent some of that $200M on an acoustics study of Neyland to see if it could be made to resonate more. It is hard to imagine that a double bowl like Neyland would be less loud than a two winged single bowl like Tiger Stadium.

Loud is overrated.

That makes more sense.

I was wondering the same thing. I think the brick would reverberate the sound pretty well, but who knows.

Hey slob'
Jeremaine Copeland:
1997 - 58 receptions for 732 yards with a 12.6 average and 9 TD's which were better numbers than Peerless had that year. That was also Marcus Nash's Senior year so JC wasn't even the main target! Peyton used JC as his #2 WR.
Jermaine's Senior year was half that because of the emergence of Peerless and Cedrick Wilson therefore he had fewer passes thrown his way. Also Tee threw a lot to Shawn Bryson out of the backfield but JC was his #3 WR.
Jeremaine's career numbers:
Passed for 199 yards (8.3 average)
Rushed for 145 (4.7 average) and 4 TD's
Received 1,361 yards (13.2 average) and 10 TD's
Punt Returns - 269 yards (7.9 average)
That's 1,974 career yards and 14 TD's; when you average 10.28 yards every time the ball is in your hands I don't call that a "wasted scholarship" especially when you factor in his leadership. Add into the equation that JC had a new QB his Senior year; since you seem to have no football intellect you probably don't understand that there is a difference.
How many Offensive players have we had that NEVER even sniffed 1,900 yards and 14 TD's in a career? But Jeremaine was a "wasted scholarship"? I've proven that you are dead wrong on Jeremaine and Seivers as well as having everyone on this board agree on Larry so we'll move on and you can scratch those two off your "beat a dead horse" list.

Savage, that video at 2:32 always brings a smile to my face. I also always take heed to Overstreet's opinion as well and agree with him on Georgia.
I think it'll be a tall order to beat them in Athens again but they still have plenty of questions to answer just like us.

I'm telling you guys I still hold to my theory of Nafslov really being Tee Martin incognito. Notice he said he didn't play D1 LINEBACKER and has yet to denie my claims. I've never seen some one who admires Tee as much as this guy so I'm sticking with my theory. I'm a huge Peyton fan and have often wondered why we as Vol fans still dont give Tee the credit he deserves. I thought it was awesome to see Tee at SEC Fanfair in ATL. So Navs if your really Tee I wanna say thanks for the memories and for bringing home the NC. (and for the autograph at Fanfair)

In all actuality, I'm as much a Tee fan as a Manning fan. But it is ridiculous to assert that Tee did more to make his teams win than Manning did.

I'm a huge Tee fan as well, and wish him luck with his Dual-Threat QB camp he started this year in ATL. But come on, Peyton was the man!! I always said that I wish Peyton would have gotten to play with Casey Clausen's setup: Donte' Stallworth, Kelley Washington, and Jason Whitten. WHOA!!! that would have been nasty!

DaddyVol- agreed
sjt18- I see your point and I'm surley not saying Tee was the better qb, I just find it odd that alot of UT fans don't give Tee the love that we do Peyton. It makes me wonder if we would still think so highly of him [Peyton] if his career in the pros hadn't been so good.

Tee is a wonderful person and had a fantastic Junior year. He put up good numbers in his Senior year as well. I would never try and take anything away from his accomplishments and what he has meant to the program. For anyone to make a comparison between Tee and Peyton is absurd. For anyone to suggest that some athletic supporter with a man-crush on him is actually Tee is even more absurd. (Sorry gavol-no offense intended)
Tee made All SEC his Senior year.
Peyton was an All-American; Sullivan Award winner; O'Brien Award winner; Unitas Award winner; Maxwell Award winner; All SEC twice; SEC Player of the Year; SEC Athlete of the Year; Academic All-American twice and SEC Honor Roll twice.
In their Junior and Senior seasons Tee had a 55.6 completion rate, 31 TD's, 4,481 yards and went 22-3. Peyton had a 61.8 completion rate, 56 TD's, 7,106 yards and went 21-4. The three losses to Florida is what sticks in everyone's craw.
UF was the simply the better team in '95. In '96 we should have beaten them hands down and '97 was a coin-flip but we took it on the chin in Gainesville. The Memphis State game was pathetic call and that crew should have never ref'd another game the rest of their lives. One or two plays in either of those three seasons would have made us National Champions.
In '98 we got every break possible to fall our way in several games. (Syracuse, UF in OT and Ark especially) The NC game it was no different. Back-up Marcus Outzen instead of Weinke??? Please! Peter Warrick, Travis Minor and William McCray have 3 receptions for a total of 26 yards between them (they averaged 250)? Leaverton makes an open field tackle on Warrick! The two big receptions to Peerless were pretty much the total of our passing game that night. Walk-on Tim Sewell has a blocked punt!!! Cheese only nets 28 yards rushing for the game! Minor, Coles, Warrick, McCray and Glenn only rushed for a total of 109 yards (they averaged 150)! They score 14 points when they had averaged 32 all season! We had ONE more big play than they did that night and that was Dwayne Goodrich's pick for a TD. Face it, Lady Luck was on our side that season for sure!
BTW, 'slob - Peerless was the Offensive MVP (not Tee) and Dwayne was the Defensive MVP (not Al, Darwin or Raynoch) so when you claim that Tee Martin won the National Championship you diminish that accomplishments of that team as a whole and they won BECAUSE they played as a team.

BOV, the Memphis game shouldn't have even been close enough that that one call made a difference. The O was not prepared that day for the Memphis D (who was the DC for Memphis then?).

"It is hard to imagine that a double bowl like Neyland would be less loud than a two winged single bowl like Tiger Stadium." TurboFan
i think its due to the fact that their entire stadium is into the game and yelling the whole time, whereas at UT's i'd say around 65% is yelling
and TommyJack, i don't think loud is overrated it plays a crucial part in games, and while it can't overcome a large gap in talent, discipline, and coaching, when that gap is small it can be the difference between a W and a L

Tiger Stadium is not louder than Neyland Stadium. I been to plenty of games in both places. TS is hotter, though.

I agree Turbo, it never should have been close to begin with. We were running along outscoring our opponents by a three touchdown margin through the first seven games (even with the FL loss) and figured that Memphis State would roll over and they didn't. Peyton throws TWO picks, Cobb isn't called down on the punt return and we let them score from the 5 with 40 seconds left in the game. It was ridiculous!
That one still sticks in my craw along with the 1988 NIT loss at MTSU; every loss to Ga Tech in the 60's & 70's; the ‘70 loss to Cow College that cost us the NC; North Texas State in '75; Duke in '76, '82 & '88; any loss to the Crimson Turd or Comodedoors; RUTGERS; Army in '86 and the humiliation of laying down to Washington State in the freezing rain in '88 (I got pneumonia from that one).

yeh nafslov. Tell me how terrible Peyton was and how great Woodson was. The Heisman was a politically correct deal that year. It's like those idiots Jimmy Carter (an appeaser), Yassar Afafat (a terrorist) and Al Gore (making millions on his carbon credit corp.) winning the Nobel Peace Price. It was a big joke and at least Vol fans recognize it for what it is.

volroadwarrior, Agreed. Everyone knows Peyton was robbed of the Heisman. Go to bleachereport.com and they go through the top 10 heisman flubs and Woodson over Peyton was the biggest. Heisman trophy is a joke anyway.
