Hernandez an all-star alternate in Cape Cod league

Tennessee pitcher Nick Hernandez has been selected as a Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star alternate for the West Team, according to a release from the Tennessee sports information office.

A rising junior for the Vols, Hernandez is playing for the Cotuit Kettleers.

Through six starts for Cotuit, Hernandez is 4-2 with a 2.65 ERA. The left-hander from Hialeah, Fla., has recorded 29 strikeouts against just six walks in 37 1/3 innings of action.

Scott Pickler, manager of defending Cape Cod League champion Yarmouth-Dennis and father of former Tennessee All-America Jeff Pickler (1996-98), will coach the East All-Stars.

The All-Star Game takes place Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham, Mass.

Wiltz Perfect: Tennessee pitcher Danny Wiltz threw a perfect ninth inning for the South Team in the Valley League All-Star Game earlier this month at Casey Field in Covington, Va.

Wiltz, a rising senior from Miami, Fla., faced the minimum in the top of the ninth and recorded one strikeout. The game ended in a 5-5 tie.

In 15 appearances spanning 17 innings for the Waynesboro (Va.) Generals, Wiltz has posted a 1-0 record with a team-best five saves and a 3.18 ERA.

Polk’s Performance: Tennessee outfielder P.J. Polk went 1-for-1 with an RBI double while helping the South Division Team to an 8-4 victory in the Northwoods League All-Star Game at the “Duck Pond” in Madison, Wisc.

Polk, a rising sophomore for the Vols, plays for the La Crosse (Wisc.) Loggers.
