Tennessee's Evander Wells ran a meet-record 20.34 seconds in the 200-meter dash to win the gold medal at the North American, Central American and Caribbean U-23 Athletics Championships on Sunday in Toluca, Mexico. Wells beat the previous meet record by nearly three-tenths of a second.
Wells, a rising junior, also won a silver medal in the 100, posting a time of 10.15. That mark tied the previous meet record and was just .07 off his career best.
“We’re always pleased to have a Volunteer represent us well in international competition,” Tennessee track and field coach Bill Webb said through a UT release. “For an athlete to excel to this degree makes us proud and brings great recognition to the program.”
Wells' career bests in both events came at the 2008 NCAA Mideast Regional. He ran a 20.25 in the 200 to place second and a 10.08 in the 100 to place fourth.
