Ashton Ward, Jen Lapicki, Lillian Hammond and Nicole Kajitani of Tennessee helped guide the Virginia Legends to their third consecutive 23-Under Amateur Softball Association championship on July 20 in Auburn, Ala.
Lapicki and Ward were named 23-U All-Americans.
Megan Rhodes, Tonya Callahan and Shannon Doepking, along with Kajitani, contributed to the title run last year.
Ward was 2-0 during the tournament. Lapicki hit a big home run as part of a 3-for-4 effort in a decisive 9-1 championship game victory over the Georgia Fire.
The Legends had to climb out of the losers’ bracket, rolling to three wins on the event’s final day. With a 7-2 record, the Legends ended up a half-game better than the Fire in the overall standings.
After Ward three-hit the East Cobb Bullets in a 4-0 win on July 19, the Legends lost 3-0 in nine innings to the Fire.
Ward, a rising sophomore, started the final day rally, allowing five hits in a 5-2 triumph over the New Jersey Elite.
Needing to defeat the Fire twice, Virginia swept Georgia in dominant fashion by 6-1 and 9-1 scores. Lapicki went 5-for-8 (.625) with a homer in the two games.

Congrats to these girls and their team. Ward is really working hard to improve and gain more experience. She should be even tougher her sophomore year. Glad to see Lapicki continue showing her power.
