Strickland, Brewer help U.S. win gold medal at Americas U18

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — The United States finished 5-0 to win the gold medal at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship following an 81-37 drubbing of Argentina.

The U.S. advances to the 2009 U19 World Championship, along with Canada (4-1), Brazil (3-2) and Argentina (2-3).

Incoming UT freshman Shekinna Strickland started and scored four points on 2-of-5 shooting, but pulled down 12 rebounds in 21 minutes.

"It feels great," said Strickland about winning gold. "We've been training really hard, harder than we were used to, and we all really wanted this."

Another UT freshman, Alissa Brewer, made a 3-pointer on 1-of-3 shooting and had seven rebounds in nine minutes off the bench.

“It feels good knowing that we came to Argentina and accomplished our goal of winning the gold medal,” said Brewer. “We went through two-a-days and a lot of practice, and I’m happy we did what we set out to do.”

12 boards in 21 minutes, and 7 in 9 minutes? The future does look bright.

Errr...what does Pat preach? Oh, yeah...rebounding wins championships. The future does look bright. These two young women have had a great opportunity this summer and it appears that both took advanage of it with great success.
