Valdosta wins TitleTown award

Knoxville was in the running, but Valdosta, Ga., was declared TitleTown USA, ESPN announced.

ESPN selected 20 finalists for the inaugural award and featured each during programs this summer.

Other cities included Boston, Green Bay, Wisc., and Williamsport, Penn.

The winner was determined by online voting July 23-27, and announced Monday night.

According to the Valdosta Daily Times, Valdosta High School has won 116 region and state championships, a large chunk of them in football. The Wildcats football team is the nation’s all-time winningest program and has 23 state championships.

It was announced on ESPN's SportsCenter last night at 650pm. There were several thousand people in the football stadium down there to celebrate. Apparantly there was a huge push for the locals to vote for themselves! Valdosta????

and we thought it was about college and professional athletics

juicetke#226846 writes:

Totally cheapened the phrase "Title Town." This concept turned into a joke that no one cares about now because the results were so far from reality. I probably would have said the same thing if Knoxville had won.

VOLS85 writes:

well that's what you get when you let fans vote...a skewed perception on their own reality, let alone anyone else in the country.

Titletown turned into a sham. You're lying to yourself if you don't think it's Boston or LA

jclowers writes:

Who cares? It's almost football time and ESPN won't have to come up with these stupid ways to fill air time. Who's Now and TitleTown both sucked let's talk about real sports.

byobbio writes:

I thought Green Bay was TitleTown. They invented the phrase. Next year, let's see who is really the Big Apple. I think ESPN is becoming EBSPN (Everything But Sports Programming Network).

this entire competition is ESPN just trolling Green Bay, Wisky

You have to be kidding me! ESPN is about stupid.

About as close as Georgia will get to a NC this year.

Coach Nick Hyder is one of the main reasons for Valdosta's win as he was the best coach Valdosta ever had!!! I know that Valdosta will agree with me. Congratulations Wildcats!!!

I may be an avid Tennesse football fan and from Knoxville, but I was a Valdosta High School football fan too. Nick was my first cousin!!

What do you expect from ESPN?

Sheepscape writes:

Exactly. This was a silly project by the four-letter network. They attempt to control sports to the nth degree.

2009SecChampions writes:

Strange wrote that bs story about how Knoxville doesnt deserve it and it goes to valdosta!

Joe2724 writes:

Ha!! A town from Georgia finishes ranked higher then the Vols!! Sound familiar?

Sheepscape writes:

Does 35-14?

volboy81#211803 writes:

...and the last time a Georgia team beat Tennessee in anything would beeeeeeeeeeeeeee??????

clcvol writes:

I would have thought that Titletown would have more to do with multiples titles in multiple sports..not a bunch in just one sport.

gavol2572 writes:

I live about 40 miles north of Valdosta and my home town has to play the wildcats and the vikings every season. They are two tough teams. I'm glad to see them achieve this honor, but I'm suprised that they didn't mention Valdosta State University which has won a couple of national titles in their division. Sure its not D-1 football but that has to count for something

BigMikeUT writes:

What a joke...Boston is hands down the current Titletown...and that comes from a someone who could care less about the Celtics, Patriots, or Red Sox. LA would be close with UCLA and USC along with the Lakers, but its gotta be Boston right now. Valdosta...OK...suuuuuuuurrrrreee.

tmartin writes:

its boston with anyone else being a distant 2nd.

spvol writes:

Yaaaawn!

VolGraduate writes:

the real title town is nyc or boston...unless we are counting high school sports then that opens the door for every city in the country

ctownvol writes:

Having attended Valdosta State I am glad to see the city of Valdosta acknowledged. The high school football there is unlike anything you may have ever seen.(More wins than ANY high school in the nation) It really is almost religious. Having said that, I must agree "Titletown" should've been Los Angeles or Boston. But then again in the grand scheme of things.....Who cares?

chad_t31 writes:

I agree with the earlier posts (sorry I didn't want to go back up and search your names) this was definately ignorant and ESPN was just trying to fill air time. Personally, I would have rather watched a complete historical background review of the lives of joey chestnut and kobyashi (sp?). What a joke. There are probably 50 cities in the u.s. who claim to be titletown. Even if knoxville had won it, this was a complete waste of time.

gavol2572 writes:

come on guys, Valdosta doesn't have much else going for them. At least let em have this one. lol

Major_Magilicutty writes:

Jclowers I couldnt agree with you more. Who's now? OMFG....I am you sons of guns.

WorkinLikeHeck writes:

I don't what's worse, ESPN trying to fill the dead of summer by picking one title town in all of America or you morons actually arguing over it. I'll go with the latter. I guess we'll just chalk this up to all of that EPSN bias.

I_Sweat_Orange writes:

Holy shnikey...think thats how you spell it...Could have put Blount county in there for that one....Hey I wonder if Valdosta recruits like Murville and Alcoa ?

invisiblekid writes:

Titletown, what's that?

MrBamSeydu writes:

Did anyone else see our OL commit from Valdosta HS on TV when they were showing the winner of this contest??? Someone told me they saw him.

pdhuff#552644 writes:

Remember reading about how beserk they were over HS football several years ago. Hadn't heard much lately till this blurb.

I would have voted for Halls Crossroads.

ctownvol writes:

How did nafslov know what I majored in?

alfrizzle097 writes:

Champoionships in all the major sports at the highest level? Believe only Boston can claim that. Heck, they can claim it in the last 3 or four years.

Homer writes:

Speaking of UCLA, lets focus on what's important. UT vs. UCLA.......Monday Night Football!!!!!!!

ctownvol writes:

Nafslov- Thanks man. I'm feeling the love.

vol03 writes:

SOUR GRAPES. For every one that has so many negative remarks about Valdosta winning the Title Town thing, guess what? Obviously you care enough to comment about it but not enough to vote for KNOXVILLE or the LADY VOLS or our FOOTBALL TEAM. The folks in Valdosta deserve the TITLE BECAUSE THEY LOVE THIER TEAMS!!!
