Woodson, who was offered by UT, picks Alabama

Rod Woodson, a 5-foot-11, 200-pound safety, from Olive Branch (Miss.) High recently gave a verbal commitment to Alabama.

Woodson also had nine other offers, including Tennessee, Arkansas, Auburn, Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

"Rod's plans were to commit before the season started," Olive Branch coach Scott Samsel told The Commercial Appeal. "My advice to him a few weeks ago was to figure out the top three or four schools that's offered him, settle on one and go ahead and commit. That's how he handled it. He just felt like at this time, Alabama appealed to him more than the other schools that were recruiting him."

Woodson, who made 140 tackles as a junior, is ranked No. 40 nationally at his position by Rivals.com.

Why are we offering the 40th ranked safety? It seems like we are already top-heavy with defensive backs. Can't believe that UT was really going to use a scholarship on him, unless he was grossly underrated by Rivals.

SO WHAT. Tell me something that matters

Anyone know if he is the son of THE Rod Woodson of Steelers fame? Just curious.

Could this have been reverse recruiting by the VOLS?

swclaw writes:

The only shock here is that the pathetic KNS didn't give it the following headline, "Mississippi DB shuns Fulmer for Alabama's Saban"

Couchdummy writes:

Probably a smart move considering the depth we have at the deep DB positions. Wish him well in his athletic career.

Olive Branch is close enough to the Tenn line that he may have been considering us. Family can probably drive to Tuscalooser for his games more conveniently. Go Vols! SAVol

NCAA advised Hamiliton that 53 DBs could be a violation.

We were forced to back off.

murrayvol writes:

We'd know it if he were Rod Woodsen's kid. Even marginal writers dig that stuff up.

CoverOrange writes:

Doesn't sound like a lot of conviction in his choice. Wouldn't be surprised if he changes his mind a couple of times by December.

He's just a kid, no reason to dis him because he happened to pull the Bama name out of a hat.

THE_VOL writes:

No surprise here...wouldn't anybody pick Bama over TN at this point????

vol4gzus writes:

the_unvOl that was a nice thot for the day. How many people do you think you blessed with that little diddy? Correct answer is ZERO! Try to reserve spreading your happiness so it won't get to thin. GO VOLS!!

We don't get everybody we want like most of our opponents. Yes some get most who they want, but not all. #40 ranked safety would be nice and remember the ink isn't dry cos no paper has been signed. Same for all our commitments. So its wait and see next Febtuary.

jdcvols#230433 writes:

Don't worry, we just got a good one from Alabama for LB.

vol4gzus writes:

for those who don't know Febtuary is now a new month replacing February on our calendars(ha..ha) my bad keying ya'll. Go VOLS!!!

jasonn1970 writes:

Only 53 DBs?!?! How will they manage.....

thesavageorange writes:

Swearinger ,the 37th rank safety, already has named us his leader and Darren Myles ,the fifth ranked safety & friend of Inky Johnson, is high on us as well.We are in good shape at S.

THE_VOL writes:

vol4gzus - son you better start prayin' harder cause you're being blinded by those orange lights and poisoned by the Kool-Aid. Take a break and try to develop an original, rational thought for once in your life. Yeah - be different than the rest of these high school jock sniffers on here!

As Mike Price said to those Artie's Angels strippers in his hotel room that night... "It's rolling, baby!"

pdhuff#552644 writes:

tngoeff, 1:12 - "loaded with defensive backs"???

Where did you get that impression?

From our 2-9!!

Is it kosher to offer 4 DBs for 2 DTs from RammaJammaBama?

We even take those w/o mullets...

cobbwebb writes:

chavis' new 1-1-9 package will be sweet , he calls it the liger package!

pdhuff#552644 writes:

It will be hard for anyone to beat us deep. I hope we make it a little harder on those 8 yard outs.

tnvol737 writes:

I wouldnt write this guy off. They may have been planning to use him at linebacker, as UT likes speed at linebacker. I'm not too upset about losing him, but Fulmer has been evaluating talent for a long time....let's not write him off.
