Home run for Kelly on Thursday?

UT signee a consensus first-round pick in baseball draft

Tennessee’s quarterback of the future or a millionaire? Life is good for Casey Kelly.

Thursday’s amateur baseball draft will go a long way toward determining where Kelly, the two-sport star from Sarasota (Fla.) High School, will be playing ball in 2008.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound pitcher/shortstop who signed with UT in February has repeatedly said a large baseball contract could lead him to play baseball professionally instead of pursuing a two-sport college career.

“The money has to be right to be something to take me away from college,” Kelly said shortly after committing to UT in January. “It has to be something big.”

Then, just when it seemed like money was the key factor, Kelly told the News Sentinel in April that a large contract wouldn’t guarantee he would go pro.

A large contract seems likely if draft projections prove accurate. Kelly has become almost a consensus first-round pick among prognosticators.

Baseball America projects Kelly to be taken 19th by the Chicago Cubs, meaning Kelly could still end up in East Tennessee via the Cubs’ AA affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies.

Pick No. 7 by the Cincinnati Reds is also a possibility since Kelly’s father, Pat, coaches the Reds’ rookie level Gulf Coast League affiliate. Baseball America reports that Kelly going to Cincinnati is a “rumor that just won’t die” even though the online source describes Kelly going No. 7 as a “bit of a reach”.

MLB.com this week projects Kelly to be picked by the Cubs. Last week, Kelly was projected to go at No. 21 by the Detroit Tigers.

The Detroit Free Press reported sources within baseball saying the Tigers are very interested in Kelly but are worried about his commitment to UT, adding that a large signing bonus could be needed to keep Kelly from heading to Knoxville.

Family would seem to point Kelly towards the diamond. Both his father and brother played baseball professionally. That, however, could work in UT’s favor since Kelly has learned all too well the demands of the minors.

If Kelly does decide to pursue a professional baseball career, UT’s recruiting focus will zoom in on quarterback.

The Vols’ projected starter, Jonathan Crompton, will be a junior this season. He is backed up by sophomore Nick Stephens and redshirt freshman B.J. Coleman, neither of which have the pedigree or college experience to scare away an elite quarterback.

After redshirting behind Crompton in 2009, UT’s coaches could sell a chance to compete for the starting job in 2010 to a highly-touted prospect. If Kelly does go pro, UT coaches could sign two quarterbacks in the 2009 class.

The Vols spent plenty of man hours recruiting quarterbacks during the spring evaluation period. Josh Nunes from Upland (Calif.) High was one of UT’s first targets. That list has since grown to double digits.

If Kelly decides to enroll at UT, much of those recent recruiting efforts would be for naught. It’s unlikely a highly touted quarterback would come in a year behind Kelly, who was ranked the 17th best pro-style quarterback in the nation by Rivals.

Thursday’s draft will give Kelly more information for his decision, but that doesn’t mean an announcement will immediately follow. Contract negotiations with whichever team drafts him could drag on for weeks.

Kelly could enroll at UT for summer school in July or just before the season starts in August.

He should consider USC. Apparently you can have an agent, get payed, and play college ball at the same time.

Well, we still don't know what he will do. Hope things work out for the best for him and us.

I got 12 cents that says he's gone. Good luck Casey!

golfballs, then you can just deny it and ride off into pro sports with only a minor pay cut!!!

Didn't many schools back off him since he was thought to be a lock for MLB?

Or am I having a geezer moment?

Posted by 02champs on June 4, 2008 at 9:32 p.m. (Suggest removal)

actually, pd, it's the other way around right now. Some teams will back off him if they think it's gonna cost too much to sign him since he has already let it be known it will take a big offer. Looks 50:50 to me right now.

Casey, I hope that whatever happens, you will consider yourself a part of the Vol family. We are sure going to claim you!

Anyone read on ESPN about Dominuque Allen, the RB from Henry County HS?

http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/recrui...

They have him rather high in their top 150 players for the class of '09. Seems like a solid start to this recruiting class with the guys we got early already. Thought everyone may enjoy hearing the good reviews on him. Think he'd compliment Creer and Poole very well.

GO VOLS!!!

Meanwhile, we continue to recruit QB's. GO VOLS!!

Casey-

If you're as good as they say....or better.......Remember that the best quarterback who has ever played is an active alumni of ours. That might help when you are thinking about the 14 hour bus rides you'll be on for 2-3 years. Might as well spend the time playing both sports, having a great time then decide which sport to play. The money will be there, and will only get better. If you hit it big in football, remember also that we put among the top number of players in the NFL . I think we have over 40 acitve players as we speak. Oh yeah, Todd Helton is a very active alumni as well. Come to college. You'll never regret it........

Here is my thought. More than a few (Kelley Washington, Mike Mauck...) kids have signed for baseball, then come back to college football.

I think UT signed Casey to get on his 'good list'. If he comes, great! If he desn't, and doesn't do well in baseball, well, UT signed him once, so let's go talk to Phil....

" Alabama leads this game 36 to 35 after the 2 point conversion. It's 4th and 15 as Kelly brings this never-quit Tennessee team to the Alabama 40 yard line with 4 seconds left in the game. 2 receivers wide right as Alabama masses to rush and...there's the snap...Kelly drops back and... he is going to be sacked...NO...he evades the oncoming linebacker...man comes open downfield...Kelly fires a rocket into the end zone and...TOUCHDOWN TENNESSEE!!! Coach Saban is livid on the sidelines. He threw his headset to the turf and did the red elephant stomp on it and then he grabbed the roll tide visor from the head of one of his assistant coaches and headed it for the ozone... there is no more time left on the clock as the officials head for the dressing room and no more visors left on the heads of the Alabama assistant coaches."

I actually hope the kid takes an MLB deal. While not a bad player, he doesn't sound like the type that UT will need once Crompton departs. If he sticks around he may just end up hurting UT's chances of landing a higher-quality QB.

Who cares? If we have to worry about a guy ranked 17th in the nation as a "pro style" QB to help us win Championships then we are in trouble.

Let him go so we can get our scholarship back and begin to scrape the bottom of the barrel again.

Funny thing is sneaky David over at Duke got a higher rated QB this year then Kelly, after we said we didn't want him.

Give me a break!

Posted by waterskier3 on June 5, 2008 at 9:20 a.m. (Suggest removal)

bebecerveza i agree that's the best we can do is 17th best QB? I think ainge was ranked somewhere in that range and you see how many championships he brought to k-town.

Go Vols... enjoy the summer because i think its going to be a wild ride in 08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck Casey with whatever you decide to do. Baseball with money & less likely injuries vs. more violent college football unpaid on the surface looks like an easy decision. Baseball in the blood would seem to lean him more that way. Another factor will be what's in his heart as well.

dont forget...also at USC, if you sign, theyll give your dad a great job at the school, wont they Patrick Turner?

Posted by db11_cn on June 5, 2008 at 10:26 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Having a college scholarship for D-1 football in hand gives Kelly the opportunity to ask for baseball money well above the MLB "slot" dollars. It's hard for me to not believe this whole scenario was planned out by dad (well-schooled in the art of baseball negotiations) and son with UT being placed in the role of pawn in this little drama. MLB allows 2-sport players who have signed with a college special bargaining leverage. Because this kind of athlete is rare, it doesn't happen often. But when it does, the school is usually one struggling with quarterback depth and willing to take the chance.

Posted by givehim6 on June 5, 2008 at 10:35 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I think all this looks good for coach Clawson. If Kelly goes to the MLB it shows he knows how to get top QB recruits, if Kelly stays at UT he will already have the the QB of the future. GO VOLS!

either way its a win win

Mark my words. B J Coleman is the QB of the future!

Posted by cmoore7 on June 5, 2008 at 11:42 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Keith Law, ESPN's Scouts Inc. affiliate, doesn't even have CK going in the first round. Less and less MLB teams are taking high school players over college players in the first round. Maybe because of maturity reasons, maybe because they want more time to scout a youngster. If you think Fulmer is psyched about him coming, imagine T.Raleigh's mindset about getting a 1st round quality player w/o having to recruit him.

I gotta go with Greyback_Vol on this one. While Kelly seems like a good kid with lots of talent, we may be better off if he leaves to play bb. Even if he isn't taken in this year's draft, we'll be having this same discussion in another year or two. His time at UT is probably measured in months rather than years. If he leaves now, recruiting a highly ranked QB would then move to the forefront.

Posted by IBleedOrange444 on June 5, 2008 at 12:43 p.m. (Suggest removal)

What time does the draft start?

Some of you guys are too quick to write off this guy's talent b/c he was only rated the 17th best pro-style QB. What do those guys know anyways? 17th best according to some outside observers could turn into the best in the country and a NC in a few years. I hope he sticks around and wears the orange, but I can't blame him if he's got big money on the table and decides to go play baseball.

Follow your heart Casey and everything will work out fine.

Posted by orangebloodgmc on June 5, 2008 at 1:20 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I prefer the Alan Cockrell/Condredge Holloway/Todd Helton scenario. Just because he first comes to play qb doesn't have to mean there will be no more baseball. But bottom line is he's gotta follow his heart, just like the previous poster said.

Hey GreeneVol, you go to Asbury?

3,467 DAYS SINCE THE LAST SEC TITLE!!!!

Here is this young man's dilemma:
Take the big baseball money and secure your future or come to UT with the "promise" of stardom and watch another FOOL's Perfect Storm blow it all away???? Hmmmm, that IS a tough decision.

mlb.com has him going to the Cubs.

Come to UT. I don't care how much money, it's the Cubs. Don't subject yourself to that.

That's awsome! Really puts things in perspective doesn't it? How many coaches have the Cubs gone through trying to win a title?

You got me curious IBO and it looks like more than 60 managers including 4 different ones in 1961. Some interesting names including Rogers Hornsby, Frankie Frisch, and all three of the dudes from the DP combo of Tinker, Evers and Chance.

Kelly will make the decision that he feels is in his best interest and no one should diss him whichever way he goes.

db11 at 10:26 may have hit the nail on the head as far as what's his head.

I still think B.J. has a strong upside for us after Crompton so I'm not too concerned about QB's.

We need Big Strong Mean and Fast DL's for the next couple of years. That should be our priority.

Posted by IBleedOrange444 on June 5, 2008 at 2:51 p.m. (Suggest removal)

60! Wow, you think they ought to try and give the next one a few more years to work it out?

Posted by hiresanders on June 5, 2008 at 2:53 p.m. (Suggest removal)

I don't know balls, you talk about all that at USC. But at Tennessee, he can do drugs (and fail tests over and over again), rape women like Sean Respert did, don't go to class, and still play ball. Tough choice.

Posted by orangebloodgmc on June 5, 2008 at 2:59 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hiresanders, we never even had a player named Sean Respert, let alone one named that that was accused of rape. But, hey, I guess you can make up crap and not expect anybody to actually call you on it. Pathetic.

IF the Cubbies would hire FOOLmore they could go another 36000 days or so and not win!

No, The_Vol, that would put them in the championship game.

OBGMC: Jason Respert played from 2001-2004, but I am unsure about the rape allegations.

Hire Sandy: I sure as hell wouldn't be throwing that kind of tag around unless I was 100% posotive. Be careful.

On a lighter note, the Cubbies took a RHP from TCU and CK is still on the board. Play it back Bobbarbilly.

kelly to bosox....last pick of 1st round.

Posted by spam247buster on June 5, 2008 at 5 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Jason Respert was accused of sexual assault while on a recruiting trip in Gainesville (even though he said he was definitely coming to UT at the time, which made the charges sound shady to me). He eventually put in a plea for misdemeanor trespassing charges.
Come on, hiresanders, if you are trying to make a case for UT football players being criminals, I'm sure you can find a better example.

how much of the national mint does the last pick of the first round get?

THE_VOL - not win? We won the freakin' SEC east last season and came within less than 10 minutes of beating the eventual national champs for the sec crown! Not win??? We had a 10 win season, moron.

Posted by hiresanders on June 6, 2008 at 12:34 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Sorry, I meant Jason Respert who copped a plea deal to get out of doing time. All other schools pulled their offers except, you guessed it...Foolmore. The list of UT criminal football players is endless.

Posted by orangebloodgmc on June 6, 2008 at 9:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Jason Respert was a high school boy at the time, not part of the Tennessee program. When he made a bad decison and got in trouble, he was at the University of Florida, under their care, oversight and guidance (specifically Alex Brown). Fulmer was absolutely right to get the facts and say, come on young man, be a better man from here on out. As far as I know Respert was exemplary in his behavior during the 4 or 5 yrs he was at UT. Do you know of anything to the contrary?
