The connection between the University of Tennessee and Catholic High School offensive tackle/defensive end Daniel Hood appears to be broken, although the reason is unclear.
Hood told the News Sentinel that he believed UT was still recruiting him, even though he hadn’t heard from the Vols lately. However, multiple UT sources said Hood is no longer being recruited.
Hood was originally told that he had an offer but it wasn’t guaranteed without a quick commitment.
“He said ‘Look, with this offer, it’s yours. The only thing that can keep you from getting this offer is if someone takes it from you,’ ” Hood said, recalling a conversation with UT coach Phillip Fulmer.
UT hasn’t since received any commitments from players similar to Hood — at least publicly.
Hood had minor arthroscopic elbow surgery last month but that isn’t thought to be a factor in his recruiting. Hood is already playing basketball and the recovery time from such a surgery is usually just a few weeks.
Hood has plenty of options. He said he has scholarship offers from Florida State, Georgia Tech, N.C. State, Louisville, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, Marshall, Colorado, Virginia Tech, Stanford and UCLA, among others.
UCLA was at the forefront after Hood visited the Los Angeles campus earlier this week during a family vacation to Las Vegas.
“Their weather is probably the best weather I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Hood said. “The campus is great too.”
Hood said he hasn’t yet whittled down his list of schools and that he’s still considering all official invites.
“No matter what happens,” Hood said. “I’m pretty set.”

"Unless someone takes it from you"? Alot of these kids like to keep their commitments silent. Wouldn't someone have to be better to take it away? If so, then that's good news! Good luck to the kid anyway!
MrBamSeydu writes:
I think recruiting is getting ridiculous. These high school kids are having their egos blown up with all the attention. Most of them know months before Signing Day, but they wait until then to publically commit just so they can stay in the limelight as long as possible (i.e. Julio Jones - Alabama). I think 90% of these kids know where they want to go from the get go, so I wish more coaches would pull scholarship offers when a kid tries to string them along. If Hood was a true Vol, he would've committed as soon as Fulmer offered him the scholly (just like our latest OL commit did). So the blame is on him. Let him go to FSU and try to transfer back home like Brandon Warren did.

I don't blame them for wanting to be sure but I agree that many have an enlarged ego problem and they need to keep going and going and going....

duckvol writes:
If this is the Daniel Hood that has had the MAJOR legal issues in Sullivan County then Tennessee needs to stop his recruitment now. I hope it is not the same kid, however a brief internet search comes up with some major issues for a kid with this name and approximate same age in Kingsport where he lived before moving in with his uncle in Knoxville. It may not be the same kid but there are many similarities - Knoxnews reporters may want to follow up on this one....

Understated, but correct!

Seriously, other than VaTech and Dadburn, these other schools have been well, less than stellar programs of recent. Pass...next...

If this kid has behavior problems that has caused serious legal issues already, then we don't need him or anyone like that. We have had our lifetime quota of those thank you.
Pullingguard writes:
Good smart recruiting by UT,... Offer is good today, but tomorrow it may not be good for someone else just may commit or show more interest with just as much talent and less personal problems. These scholarship offers should not be offered and let some high school kid keep on keeing on with the recruiting to enahance his ego and keep a college team in limbo about the kids choice. Kids who give a college the silent commitment still hangs some college teams out to dry by accepting all the goodies knowing he is just riding the good times. It's a weakness in college ball.
Vol13 writes:
Charlie Chaplain was a silent commit.

The reason that UCLA's recruiting was so bad last year is because they changed coaches. Remember, if you ever change coaches then your recruiting will be terrible (just like UCLA's was last year). I read that here one time and I try to live my life by that adage daily.
So the moral of the story is don't ever change coaches.
bobbarbilly writes:
although i feel that there is more stuff cooking under the lid of this skillet than we can see, if these 'cruits want to play "string-along" then the coaches should also have that option.

If this is the same kid as the one in this link, then this one is a no-brainer. There is NO WAY we should even be considering offering him anything. For those of you who haven't checked out that link, go take a look at it. If you still aren't convinced, then heaven help you.

"Yeah TJ, I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact that about 25% of the Rivals 100 last year were from within a 2 hour drive of the Rose Bowl, huh?"
****OK, little sjt, considering the fact that there were about 12 guys from the Rivals Top 100 from the state of California, that claim is a little absurd. It doesn't surpise me though that you were off by so much though. (Hint: 12 out of 100 is 12%, which is less than half of the 25 that you tried to claim). Congrats on being wrong. LOL!!!!!!

It's kind of funny that Oklahoma signs players on average from as far away as we do. Yet, we can't get any talent close to Knoxville and you "can't really count Oklahoma because all those kids are from Texas." LOL!!! What a double standard. And we go into Alabama, Mississippi, etc. and sign their best players at times. How is that different?
At the end of the day you can only sign 25 or less. I don't care if you have 10 million 5*'s within a city block of your campus. You can still only take 25 or less. And for every kid that wants to play close to home, there is one that wants to play on the other side of the country. You just have to be able to identify them and market your program to them. I have worked with all kinds of people from all over the world and one thing is for sure - they all love living in Tennessee.
If we can get kids to visit campus, we have as good a shot to sign them as anyone, regardless of where they hail from. And I haven't heard anyone complaining that the quality of our official visits has waned in the past few years.
tngeoff is dead on! Our demographics and geography is only an issue when we aren't recruiting well. When we are, you don't hear a soul even mention it. It's nothing more than a convenient excuse for those who make excuses.

Yes, this is the same Daniel Hood with the legal issue linked on here already. He will play at a major D1 school next year and has hopefully already begun the redemption process over his legal issue. He will probably be a model citizen in college too. Having said all that, I do not want him at UT. Some things are more important than football and I simply cannot forgive or forget his past indiscretion.

I believe what Coach Fulmer actually said was this "He said ‘Look, with this offer, it’s yours. The only thing that can keep you from getting this offer is if someone takes it from you... or if you are involved in some horrifically perverse sexual deviation with a mentally challenged family member.’
I think that's what he said anyway.

Anyone thinking we'll go to a calkwalk at UCLA this year is not paying attention. I don't doubt that we'll win the game. But they have a lot of talent and a new reason to live. Could be a dandy.

It's not complicated. USC gets the best (now)in a talent rich state. California crumbs can be real tasty. UCLA is down, injury riddled, etc.
Coaching at TN & UCLA suspect, thus could make for an interesting match-up. Could be a barn burner.

whether one likes neuheisel or not....i would take a young team coached by neuheisel and norm chow over an experienced team coached by karl dorrell.
they lost to notre dame for crying out loud. what i said about a new staff and taking time to learn things applies to ucla as well. but, when you are nowhere near playing to the level of your capabilities, there is nowhere to go but up. but, it will take time at ucla too.

UT is not recruiting Hood period ,and I think it's the best thing for the program.Hood's dad said that Fulmer hasn't called in a month. The university is way too close to this situation and can't afford the black eye.
By the way Hood is not being recruited by anyone at DT.He is a OG/OT.When he commits watch this story go main stream especially if he commits in the SEC.If he's smart he'll take the UCLA offer and stay low.

Where's the criticism of Catholic for enrolling this kid & suiting him up to play ball? Obviously allowing a kid with a record like that to matriculate & play ball is as questionable a decision as UT taking him would be ... unless becoming & remaining competitive in football is more important than any sort of institutional morality or the safety of female students. How's that going unchallenged for the new private school darlings of the media?
