Stavion Lowe left Tennessee's campus intrigued yet still very undecided.
"I liked it," the 6-foot-5, 300-pound offensive lineman from Brownwood (Texas) High School said following UT's junior camp this weekend. "I got to see a whole lot. I got to meet with the coaching staff and campus. I liked my trip.'
Another trip to Knoxville is in the planning stages. Lowe said he'll take five official visits this fall before making his decision. One of those trips is expected to be back to UT.
Lowe has approximately two dozen offers.
Florida, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Miami, Auburn and Notre Dame are some of the highlights.
So who's receiving the most consideration?
"Pretty much everybody," Lowe said. "That's why I'm visiting these camps, get somewhat of an evaluation and see what's out there before I make a choice."
It took Lowe 14 hours to make the drive from Brownwood to Knoxville. That, however, doesn't seem to be a concern.
"I don't think distance is a factor," Lowe said.
Playing his college football outside the state of Texas seems unavoidable for Low. Texas and Texas A&M have fulfilled their necessary allotment of offensive linemen. The smaller schools in Texas - such as Texas Christian, Texas Tech and Baylor - aren't receiving much consideration.
The Vols took great steps in addressing their offensive line needs for the future this weekend, picking up JerQuari Schofield from South Aiken High in Aiken, S.C., Kevin Revis from Rhea County and Aubrey Phillips from Olive Branch (Miss.) High. (Phillips could play offense or defense in college.)
Lowe spent three days in Knoxville, yet walked away with a business-like approach to evaluating his many options.
"Just trying to see how I feel at this campus," Lowe said. "Kind of taking it a little slow."

There were 153 prospects at the camp. 114 offense and 39 defense. That doesn't make any sense to me.

Yeah, that's how KNS spelled it too. Maybe they edited it before I read it.

JerQuari Schofield is in Aiken, which is about 20 minutes from where I live, I'll have to see if I can catch him playing this fall, find some highlights at the least.

Txvol, you are correct!! They have produced several lineman in the last few years. I have an idea, since Chavez won't get off his A$! maybe we should have a d-coordinator camp!!!! Texas plucked the dude from Auburn, and Ole Miss got S.Carolina's. AS much as everyone would like to see Fulmer gone, don't you think we should go this route? I can understand recruiting issues due to turn over on the O-staff in the past 3 years, but there has been no turn over on the D-staff. Give Fulmer a D-staff that gets after it like the O-staff does and see what happens!!

DaddyVol: Fret not. It is said that Chief Chavis has implemented an aggressive Email program aimed at highly touted D-linemen. Hold on to your hineys people.

Chill out on Chavis people! If you look at the remaining top DLs in the county, UT is on most all their lists. If Chavis is doing such a bad job, how do you think we got on those lists? Coming on this site is like walking into a hen house.
If you football geniuses would actually take the time to look at our roster, you would see how stupid you sound. We happen to have 9 DTs (3 FR, 1 SO, 2 JR, and 3 SR) along with 9 DEs (2 FR, 2 SO, 3 JR, and 2 SR) for a total of 18. That's 3 more than Florida, 2 more than Georgia, and the same amount as LSU.
So can everyone STFU about our DL needs? I'm sure Chavis knows exactly what his needs are and will shore them up appropriately.

Likely to play and contribute: Langley (RFr), Williams (Jr), Bolden (Sr), Fisher (Sr)
Possible contributors: Nelson (Jr), Thomas (So)
Rivals' roster lists no others. If there are others then they are probably practice squad players only.
Ashley, I'm not a negative guy. However, Chavis has built a reputation for not liking recruiting and for not being very good at it. Though I'm not a fan of his style or philosophy, he seems to do better with players once they're on the team... but the modern game demands that every coach be a great recruiter. The days when other coaches could be expected to bring him players are gone.

Daddyvol, I've defended CPF here... but it is HIS responsible to set the bar for Chavis and send him packing if he doesn't hit it. If Chavis is the cause for Fulmer failing then Fulmer is responsible along with Chavis.

Maybe wait and see what Pearl and Co does over 15 years or so first?
Also, it is a little different recruiting and coaching 12 guys with a staff of about as many and doing the same with over 100 players and a staff of 25 or so including trainers and GA's.
If I'm not mistaken Pearl has 2 or 3 paid assistants. Fulmer has 9... ratios: 4/12 vs 10/100+.
Football recruiting is the lifeblood of every program and there's probably not a more difficult thing to be effective at in all of college sports.

Ummm....that was just a little sarcastic humor....just a little juice for all the Fulmer bashers, personally I think Fulmer and Chavis both have earned the right to leave UT on their own terms....when the feel its time to go. Every team goes through down years, its the nature of the game, and when you are down, the big time recruits don't consider you as much.... They want to go to a team that is winning...so they can get that immediate exposure. You gotta tough it out, land a few diamonds in the rough, polish em up, take em to battle and kick a couple stars off of those "can't miss" recruits. In a VOL fan till the day they close the lid on me....no matter the record or the ranking.

I see where Oenoboy is coming from. NEXT year is when the need for D/T's and D/B's will be needed. sjt18..Here are the possible D/T's we have and most of them will see playing time with the possibility of two others. Bolden,Ayers,Langley,Williams,Brimfield, with Hall and Fisher.Ayers has sized up a bit and was in on rotation this spring at D/T.Look for next year NOT to see many new recruits but to fill a hole or two, that will leave possibly 25-30 schollies for '10 and give us a top heavy junior class next year. With whom we have picked up already the rotation will be in good shape.

oenoboy, Can you name them?
According to the Orange and White Game roster...
52 Victor Thomas DT
55 Dan Williams DT
58 Donald Langley DT
67 Joshua Davis DT
68 Stephen Darville DT
95 Walter Fisher DT
97 Chase Nelson DT
98 Demonte' Bolden DT
46 Andre Mathis DE
64 Jonny Harrison DE
66 John Morrison DE
88 Phillip Tritapoe DE
91 Robert Ayers DE
94 Wes Brown DE
99 Ben Martin DE
That does not include the incoming freshmen class with DT Montori Hughes, DE Willie Bohannon, & DE Steven Fowlkes. Certainly a couple of the listed players above will not contribute in playing time but the point is we do not have a shortage of skilled contributing players for those positions compared to other teams.
TommyJack...You're right, I flared a bit but the constant whining just gets to me.
Regardless, Chavis has done a good job recruiting in the past so I see no reason for anyone to start doubting him now. I don’t care if his methods are by email, stork delivery, or having Scotty beam them up.

Anyone know where I can find a roster of the attendees of last week's camp?
Posted by sjt18 on June 16, 2008 at 10:44 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I can see Ayers or even Brown doing some spot work at DT.
If you are talking about 09, Bolden, Ayers, and Fisher will be gone. Hall won't arrive until 09. He will never play with those guys.
Brimfield was moved to OL.
After this year, the returning DT's that we know of right now are: Langley, Williams, Nelson, Thomas, Hall, and maybe Hughes.
If I'm not mistaken, this class is about half-way filled now. I've heard they are looking to sign 25 but can only see where they can fit around 20 or so. They have 9 commits now from HS players plus Hall, Sykes, and Rufus Wms.
WR isn't necessarily a priority but I suspect signing Brown or another elite prospect at WR is. They need to sign at least 2 LB prospects. They will sign another OL or two if they get who they want. Another RB would be a luxury... Oku or Wingo? They are chasing 3 of the best DB's coming out this year and would probably take all three if they could. That would tie up 6-9 scholarships.
DE should be in decent shape so long as Williams and Sykes make it back in.
DT has to be the priority right now. I know they are recruiting some big name guys. Maybe I'm just skittish because of last year's class... but I'd be alot more comfortable if they'd go ahead and get the best instate prospect they can find so it won't be a complete shut out again.
In all likelihood though, UT will sign DE's, OL's, or even LB's and convert them into DT's. It works but takes time.

Sometimes it seems to work better to have many good defensive lineman that you can rotate thru and keep fresh, versus having the Great Ones that you play all game.
A deep bench of linemen is a very wonderful thing to have on both sides of the football.

I am not sure about Davis' scholarship status. I don't see him on any recruiting lists but it appears he is a RS Freshman which would seem odd for a scout team player. He could be a transfer? Outside of roster listings, I cannot find any other information.
Darville is a Senior that has gone between OL and DL depending on their depth (and more likely practice squad) needs. I'm not sure if he is a scholarship player or not.

That is the heart of the matter sjt18. If Chavis is the cause for another failed defense than it is Fulmer's responsibity for not doing anything to change the outcome. So far no high caliber DT's it is a desperate need. Will he keep another coordinator too long? I hope things will drastically improve on the defense this year because we were simply weak on defense last year, did play better later in the year which gives us hope.

sjt18, I think your statement is partially true:
"Football recruiting is the lifeblood of every program and there's probably not a more difficult thing to be effective at in all of college sports."
Recruiting is the lifeblood of every college sports program, and the guys like Meyer, Saban and even Zook, have more room to make a few mistakes because they are such outstanding and hard working recruiters.
IMO, the hardest college sport to recruit for is baseball. They only get 11.7 scholarships, the HS players they sign could still end up going straight to pro baseball, and even the kids they get in school can leave after their junior year. Thats a tough job of balancing your players...

oenoboy, I suspect everyone will "STFU" about the defensive line when and if they prove on the field that they can stop the run and pressure the QB in the upcoming season. I think the DE position will see an upgrade this year but DT is still a question mark beyond Williams. Bolden has yet to prove he can be a consistent presence, much less a team leader given his attitude last year.

sjt,
I am basing my opinions based on what I've read he has said. "seeing how I feel, taking it slow, pretty much everybody is receiving consideration" are aren't very encouraging to me.
I may be dead wrong, but when a person is excited about something (regardless of what that 'something' is), they don't tend to have a completely indifferent framework. I interpreted what he said as being very indifferent. Again, maybe I'm wrong but that's what I see.
Maybe the official visit will change things. But as it stands right now, don't think there is anything at UT that will make him choose us first.

All I did was list the O&W roster to help show who the 18 defensive linemen on the team are. How is that over the edge?
If you go to the official sites of other top programs in the SEC and look at their rosters, you will find we have more than most. They list ALL their players just like we do be they 1st stringers or your imaginary 5th stringers.
What's over the edge is you saying Chavis should be fired because he supposedly can't recruit. We happen to have two of the nation's best recruiting classes on campus right now with the hauls from 05 and 07. Follow the below link to the 05 class. You can then follow that to the 07 class. Take a look at the 3, 4, and 5 star recruits on those lists and then explain to us how Chavis has not pulled his weight in recruiting over the past few years. It's an ignorant statement.
http://rivals100.rivals.com/commitlis...
Below are our top 6 DTs from that 5th string list and their Rivals star rating...
52 Victor Thomas DT – 3 star
55 Dan Williams DT – 3 star
58 Donald Langley DT – 4 star
95 Walter Fisher DT – 5 star
97 Chase Nelson DT – 3 star
98 Demonte' Bolden DT – 4 star

oenoboy, Chavis didn't recruit all of those guys. I'm not sure he recruited any of them in fact.
The repeated thing I've seen is that he does a good job once recruits get to campus on trips but isn't good out in the homes and HS's.
I don't like his philosophy of defense but recruiting is a separate matter and should be treated that way. Even if I liked his D ideas, he'd still be a questionable recruiter and possible liability. That could be part of his insenuation last year that he might hang it up before too long.

TigerVol9802, now that's just ridiculous, a ZERO man defensive front? Now the 2-9 Buzzard, that's a defense these recruits can sink their teeth into. BTW, congratulations on the FO from Ashley, you're in an elite.....well a medium sized group there.

Oenoboy, it wasn't over the edge in printing that list BUT, as I said yesterday, it's about proving it on the field for these guys, not stars or who recruited them. Beyond Williams, Bolden, and Fisher, the biggest claim to fame the rest of these guys may have is being listed in game participation under the stat columns.
As far as Chavis being fired goes, he has brought most of that heat on himself with the performance of the defense the past two years and his comments about his future. Being ranked in the lower half of the nation in defense and saying that "I'm kind of glad I'm on my way out." doesn't really help the cause. Throw in interviewing with the Falcons, and it stands to reason that it may be close to time for a change.

Oenoboy, you need to go back to rivals.com and look at a few things. Go to page 2 on the team recruiting list for that respective year and it gives list of players and who recruited them. In 08' Chavez got credit for 2star Carson Anderson. In 07' he pulled in 3 star Deshaun Barnes who never played a game for TENN. In 06' he stole 3 star Justin Garrett???????????? Maybe he helped with other players, but everyone else got credit for their hard work. Maybe rivals.com has a personal vendetta against chavez, but it's where you claim to have gotten your info. If you go to the list for the last 3 years he has not stepped up to the plate from a RECRUITING stand point.
