Parker, Manning finalists for Teen Choice athlete awards

Candace Parker is officially a teen icon.

The former University of Tennessee women’s basketball star is one of five individuals nominated for the Female Athlete award at Teen Choice 2008, which celebrate the hottest icons for teenagers in television, music, movies, comedy, fashion and sports.

UT’s link to the award doesn’t end with Parker. Former UT quarterback Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts is a nominee for the Male Athlete.

The awards, which are selected by the teen-voting public, will be announced Aug. 4. Instead of statuettes, winners received surfboards.

Parker, the first pick in the WNBA draft, is starring for the Los Angeles Sparks after leading the Lady Vols to their second consecutive national title.

Parker’s competition includes gymnast Shawn Johnson, race car driver Danica Patrick, and tennis players Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova.

Manning joins brother Eli Manning of the New York Giants, soccer player David Beckham, golfer Tiger Woods and basketball players Kobe Bryant and LeBron James as the nominees for the Male Athlete.

Wakeboarder Dallas Friday, snowboarders Gretchen Bleiler and Hannah Teter, surfer Stephanie Gilmore and freestyle skier Kristi Leskinen are the nominees in the Female Action Sports category. Olympic gold medal snowboarder Shaun White, surfers Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning, BMX rider Ryan Nyquist and skateboarder Ryan Sheckler are up for the Male Action Sports Award.
