ROCKFORD - Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning teed off for charity this morning, hosting the St. Mary's Golf Classic at Egwani Farms.

Proceeds from this year's event will go for renovations at the Women's Pavilion on the campus of St. Mary's Medical Center, according to senior vice president Jerry Askew.

Later today, the former Tennessee Vols quarterback will present the Peyton Manning Scholarship.

The scholarship has been awarded annually since 1998 to a first-year student participating in the University of Tennessee's Honors Program.

The scholarship honors the former Vols signal-caller, co-captain and 1997 All-America selection.

Manning also assists disadvantaged youth through the Peyback Foundation, which was established in 1999 to establish programs that provide the necessary leadership and growth opportunities for youth who are at risk.

More details as they develop online and in Friday's News Sentinel.

Iam4ua,
If you're "4 UA", why are you talking smack about a game we played against Florida. Not sure which UA you're "for", but whichever it is, I'm sure Manning beat you down and made you like it.

And if you're a Gator fan, I guess it's easy to attack someone else's all-pro NFL quarterback since you've never had one worth a phooey! What's your Heisman winner Wuerffel doing now? I think he's a financial planner somewhere. Maybe Peyton could get his advice on how to invest Peyton's $100 salary and endorsements.

Go flame somewhere else.

Who is "UA"? Arkansas? Arizona? Alabama?
Peyton was an All-American, is a Super Bowl winning QB who has been NFL MVP twice and a perennial pro-Bowler.
So yeah, the critical comments about him make LOTS of sense...

Then why does a lot UT fans (myself included) say that the MVP of the national champion team, and teams from the late 90's was Al Wilson? You are an idiot that just wants to press buttons. You make these asinine comments with no legitimate reason. Peyton Manning would have went down in Tennessee lore even if he were a Smurf or CandyStripe. Get a clue...

CoverOrange writes:

naf, the blogosphere didn't exist in 96-97 so the only fan comments you heard were the ones on barstools where you scrubbed the floor. Second, I'm sure the other 80 some odd players that wore orange in 98 would be surprised to know Tee won the NC all by himself. Third, sadly it was Fulmer who was stupid for not putting Martin in against Nebraska BECAUSE OF THE KNEE INFECTION Manning had the month prior. Lastly, site your multiple sources for how you know definitively that "the black players on Peyton's team hated him".

I Love Peyton! But as far as Bama never having a QB as good, well I'm older and I remember Broadway Joe and The Snake, and even Rutlidge for that matter.

I just heard that the entire Bama football team made "A's" last semester. They are hoping to teach them "B's" next semester and a few may get to "C's" by Christmas.

Bama has also announced a new Sports related Degree Program for its student athletes. It is a four year program that will allow most players to graduate with a GED, and not even have to go to summer semesters.

Peyton Can't win the big game??? Remember Ohio State in 96' with Heisman winner Eddie George as its running back? Oh wait, I'm sure that was all Jay Graham. Back in 1995 when Peyton and the Vols destroyed Bama in Birmingham it was a big game. Alabama was the big game in the 90's. You must not remember those years? Tennessee's biggest rival has and will always be Bama. It was a huge game in 95' when Manning and the Vols destroyed the Tide. The reason you must not think Bama is a big game is because recently Tennessee has had success against the Tide. But before Manning it was the game and really the only game (Florida was terrible until the mid 90's). He turned that series around with the strike to JOEY KENT (a black guy) who raced down the field on the first play of the game for a score. Do you really think that Joey Kent would say he couldn't stand Manning after all those TD's Peyton threw to him??

Huge Tee Martin fan here. He has a street named after him too on campus. Those were the years weren't they? But you do have to admit Jay Graham was probably the Citrus Bowl MVP with that ridiculous run up the middle for six. He totally outshined George, who couldn't run anywhere thanks to that stout Vol D.

I do remember that beat down that Leonard Little put on Jay Barker the entire game back in the last game in Birmingham back in was it 1997? God - Ive played and seen a lot of football, but the beating he took that game from one man made me literally turn away. It was like a runaway freighttrain picking on a small town of infants... I couldnt watch it anymore. If you dont recall, i think I have the makepiece reel of I what I counted as 14 or 15 direct hits he took from him that game =--most in the first half... And then as Gene Stallings said in the paper the next day "I turned around to put him back in the game and he had his helmet off and had basically taken himself out of the game." Oh then there was the first pass from the line of scrimmage that Peyton Manning threw fromt the line of scrimmage to set the stage for what was your programs worst beating ever... Then there was Jay Graham - who basically ran all over you all day long...
Yeah that Peyton Manning!!
So I uh dont remember a UA...

DCflorida,
That's $100 M-I-L-L-I-O-N. Most people that follow sports know we're talking in millions when talking about an NFL QB -- unless you're talking about Fla. QB's, for whom pro football salaries are usually talked about in the past tense.

Good for Danny, if he's in ministry. And it's hard to argue Danny had a better team during that stretch. But I don't really think there is even a debate about who the better QB was. Danny made a career out of ministry because he couldn't hack it in the NFL. Peyton will go down as among the best ever!

Cant crack on Wuerffel. Met him when I was in NOLA helping with the recovery. He is a great and sincere guy whose work ethic pushed those of us from TN to work harder and longer. I hated the whuppins he put on us, but he, like Manning, is one class act.

CoverOrange writes:

nafslov, you're right Condredge was the greatest ever in Orange. I forgot, how many SEC and NC trophies did he win for UT?

Tee Martin didn't beat Florida St all by himself just as much as Peyton didn't lose to Florida all by himself.

FWBVol writes:

DCFlorida, wrong about the Wuerffel-led gators beating UT four times when Peyton was quarterback. Granted, Peyton never beat Florida, but Danny was a year ahead of Manning and thus only beat him three times.

I think all of us should be able to take off our team-colored glasses long enough to admitt that both DW and PM were both class acts and great college quarterbacks. Both have been a credit to the game off the field as well.

CoverOrange writes:

Further, DC and FWB, correct me if I am wrong but did Todd Helton start against Florida in 94?

naf, Peyton hobbled because of the knee infection, but he stayed in the game until late in the fourth, much later than he should have had to.

Condredge was a better Michael Vick before Vick was even born. And he was a virtual one man team. But he won no trophies which is your measuring stick, naf.

FWBVol writes:

DCflorida, if you spell PEYTON correctly, and as TurboFan said, Helton started against the Gators in 1994. Plus, Wuerffel was redshirted and was fifth-year senior when he won the Heisman.

nafslov, I won't deny the greatness of Holloway. His record speaks for itself. There couldn't have been a better person to be the first black QB in the SEC. Tee was great as well. And Jimmy Streater, some could argue, had all the tools as Condredge, but he didn't have the team around him Holloway did. However, to say that Peyton Manning was anything less than the best pure dropback QB in UT history is not just stupid, it's ignorant.

FWBVol writes:

im4ua, let's see, the last QB from UT to lead his team to the Super Bowl title has academic scholarhips in his name funded by scholarships given in his name to UT. The last Alabama quarterback to win a Super Bowl (Kenny Stabler) drives drunk and needs to be in AA.

DennisVols writes:

This story is about the man not just about the player. Manning has a children's hospital in Indy named after him now in honor of his commitments not just financial but time. This kind of honor is usually bestowed on people after they have died.
Anyone who can fail to see how Manning has contributed not only to football but to humanity is driving with their eyes closed. Peyton set many passing records as a QB at UT for the university, SEC & NCAA but those pale in comparison to his contributions off the field. His legacy will be noted in many different areas. I remember seeing him and his family in N.O. handing out supplies to victims following the hurricane. Many gave money but he gave even a more valued thing called time. He encourages others and is the kind of idol you would want your children to model their life after.
Heart is a true measure of a man and Peyton’s measures lager than most.

CoverOrange writes:

sjt, based on nafs previous comments, I don't think he takes the cerebral aspect of the players into account, only the athleticism. Knowing where to be when, who is going to be where when, etc. Naf only considers how fast they run, how hard they hit and if they have more moves than a field mouse eluding a diving hawk. Oh, and how many NCs they personally won.
