A University Tennessee signee is coming to Knoxville with a big-time national award in her suitcase.
Chanelle Price of Easton (Pa.) High School has been named the Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
The 800-meter specialist won three consecutive Pennsylvania state championships including a state-record run of 2 minutes, 02.90 seconds her senior season.
Price, who will compete in the Olympic Team Trials in Eugene, Ore., also ran the second-best time in scholastic history (2:01.61) at the Prefontaine Classic on June 8.
She's also an A student and eligible for the overall Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year Award to be presented prior to the ESPY Awards in July.
''It's probably harder to notice what someone's doing in the classroom,'' Price told the Morning Call. ''But to be able to balance what I'm doing athletically with what I do academically, it's something I take pride in.''
Price has worked as a Bible school counselor in the summer and volunteers with the Special Olympics.
''I'm always the first one to sign up for that,'' Price told the newspaper. ''I love that.''

Chanelle just might be the best athlete we have ever signed, in any sport.

I have had the pleasure of watching Chanelle for the past four years (I am a retired teacher/coach at Easton HS). She is wonderful young lady as well as an outstanding athlete and will be a great representive for the University and athletic department. I am so pleased she is going to my Univeristy (UTK 70).
