Two of Tennessee's rising stars were winners Friday at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
Lady Vols freshman Jeneba Tarmoh won the women's 100-meter run in 11.21 seconds at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at Ohio State University.
Tarmoh defeated a talented field that included 2007 Junior Olympic four-time champion Victoria Jordan, who was second in 11.38.
"I'm pretty happy matching my PR in this event," said Tarmoh. "It shows I have some consistency in my racing. When there is consistency, there is also time for a big drop. I'm very happy."
UT freshman Joseph Berry, who won the SEC and NCAA Regional in the pole vault, cleared 17 feet, 4.5 inches.
"I came in at 5 meters," said Berry, who added the wind was a little sideways at times. "I debated whether or not to come in at 5 or 5.05. I cleared on the second attempt and then went to 5.10 to get the world qualifying mark. I missed the first, but cleared it and then went to 5.15. I was very excited after 5.15, I knew I made the World Team."
Tarmoh and Berry qualify for the world junior championships in Poland.
"It's amazing to make the World Team," said Berry. "I've never been to Europe at all. I feel great that I made it. It's going to be a good competition. I'm excited to go over there and compete."
Tarmoh was a member of the 2006 World Junior team that won the gold medal in the 4x100.
Meanwhile, Lady Vols freshman Holly Kane finished 13th in the javelin. The former Karns High School standout's top throw came on her last attempt at 126-6.

Have a feeling Joe Berry will become our best vaulter ever, surpassing Olympic medalists Tim Mack and Lawrence Johnson. Just a gut feeling.

You might be right. Vaulters normally peak after college so he has several more years to compete and improve. The two LV also gave outstandint efforts. Tarmoh might turn out to be the best women's sprinter that the school has had. She has amazing speed. It's good to see a local kid doing well at UT.
