Wednesday morning’s hearing in Sessions Court on DUI charges involving Tennessee punter Britton Colquitt has been rescheduled for July 7.
A previous hearing related to Colquitt’s Feb. 17 arrest was also postponed in April.
Colquitt, 23, had his scholarship removed by UT coach Phillip Fulmer and was suspended for UT’s first five games this season after Colquitt’s arrest for DUI and leaving the scene of an accident.
Police said Colquitt, a second-team All-SEC selection last season, admitted to having two beers and three mixed drinks before hitting a parked car near the Old City and later a tree stump.
Punter Chad Cunningham is likely to start for UT’s season opener at UCLA on Sept. 1.

He's already been suspended for the first 5 games of the season.

As good as he is, Colquitt needs to be kicked off the team. Five incidents and he hasn't been booted? You don't think Fulmer is showing favoritism to the Colquitt family. The team is bigger than one person, no matter who it is. I've lost some respect for Fulmer on this one.

Multiple offenses for him, so I'm sure the prosecutors are looking at this very carefully and are taking their time.
I think the right thing for him to do is focus on getting his life together. If his drinking issues are that bad, football should be the least of his concerns.

College football equals big business. Forgive Colquitt and let him play because right now he makes a difference for the team (including his playing ability and the family's large donation). Anyone who thinks otherwise has both eyes shut and lives in the 19th Century. Oh, and by the way, get that boy a chauffeur for his senior season!

Marc: Not to be contrary :), but with respect to Colquitt, I doubt it's the prosecution delaying this. I mean, how long do you need to look at it??

Tommy,
I suppose it depends. As a business owner, I have a contract with the State of Tennessee. I seek funding for my services through TNCARE funds...and, if they are denied I have to appeal the denial. I can't tell you how many times the state has issued a continuance so they could "gather more information". I'm still waiting for an answer on 2 cases that were heard in January (the appeal was made last October).
I suppose when I hear a case has been "postponed" or "continued", I often wonder. No telling what the circumstances are.

Just an FYI, He was not on scholarship or on the team when he had his initial issues. This is really the first time since he has been on the team that he has crossed the line. I am sure that all of you would want to be punished now, for all of your transgressions you have had in your lifetime!

iam4ua...
You need to be careful...word on the street is that you're smuggling most of Bammer's coke in your "backdoor." Seems that Saban thought it would be best to include you for a couple reasons. One, it keeps the coke hid so no more dismissals, and two...it fills a need for you. But seriously... you shouldn't be on the computer, you need to be hiding.

iam4ua you are ignorant. Why don't you worry about your coke selling linebackers before you throw around stupid accusations. By the way, why are you even reading stories about UT football? I sure as hell wouldnt worry myself with Bammer stories assuming you have enough literate people in AL to have a newspaper to write them.

According to the info released at the time of the incident, Colquitt had gone almost 4 years without getting into trouble. That was probably the difference between getting suspended and getting booted.

Get the Drunk off the team. Five incidents and someone saying he wasn't on the team...give me a break. If he a uniform and walked on the field he was a part of the team. Fulmer let relationships get the best of him here. Fulmer should have "PUNTED" him up to Carson Newman.

I also agree he should be kicked off the team, but not for the same reasons... because he needs to hit bottom. It'll be the only way he can get back on his feet. UA, you should have learned this in your AA class.

Punting royalty, this young man has had many opportunity he seems determined to waste. At some point UT's needs to hold him accountable for his actions off the field. FYI, According to UT Sports: He is a rising senior in reguards to football. He originally signed out of Bearden in 2003 but delayed his entry until January of 2004, then he reshirted that fall this was most likely due to the fact Dustin was a senior that year.

ande, He'll miss 5 games and may never start again. Unlike, Meyer, CPF suspended him for maybe the most critical part of the season and against some of the better teams UT plays. He'll be gone for Aub, UF, and UCLA. The direction of UT's season could be decided before he kicks again.

Who was the kid from Knoxville that was booted (last year?)for DUI on campus before he was even in school?
Marc, my wife is a lawyer and can never make a schedule more than two weeks ahead because of continuances. Causes range from witness availability, officer availability, lawyer's on vacations, medical experts availability, judges playing golf, misfiled documents, etc. And because courts just assign dates for hearings w/o regard to anybody's schedule but the courts the stars have to align for it to happen.

He should red-shirt this coming season since he will miss the first 5 games.. Take a redshirt and get back into business in 2009.... And the postposments usually happens in Summer since all parties of Lawyers, Judges, etc., etc., are on vacation, fishing, goofing off, or acting normal so nothing will happen until fall... Then he gets 20 hours of community service... Fulmer was too harsh in his actions on this one.

Of course, I am assuming you said the same thing about your all-SEC linebacker that was caught carrying that gun a couple of years ago. Surely you have those same high standards?

iam4ua....
Bammer has no proven linebackers. Iam4ua Maybe you should start studying up on your own team instead of reading articles about ours and spewing nonsense. Every article I read about Bama's coke dealing linebacker and most upstanding citizen Jimmy Wesley Johns said that Bammer had only one linebacker left with proven experience. Sounds like another rough year on the rise in Tuscalooser maybe this year the Tiders will go 8-5. That would be an improvement over 7-6 and 6-7 nonrespectfully.

I've seen pictures, he tore the car up pretty badly. It wasn't just a minor scrape or dent. I hope the guy gets a handle on his drinking and changes his life, but it certainly seems that having the last name Colquitt is what kept him on the team.

Why is this even being debated. This is why Adams wrote his article. Fulmer is wrong and it is as clear as can be. The kid has a problem and continuing to enable him by allowing him to stay on the team is just making it worse. He will not stop until someone slams him good. This isn't a childish mistake. He gets drunk and caught over and over and over. Enough. Every one of you on this site would be spitting mad if you read this in the paper and it was just some ole dumba**. Lynch em !!! Prison!!! Wait he can punt oh well then just suspend em.

ok, here goes;
-Yes, Britton is given some leeway because of his hamily. I can't find a problem with that, his famly has a legacy at UT, and is a strong supporter.
-Yes, he is immature. Let's say he doesn't drink any more than the average college student, but he is just 'unlucky' enough to get caught...he's got to learn!!!! Some people just have no 'luck'.
-College students drink. Ballplayers drink. They smoke pot. They may even mess with cocaine. That is jUST THE WAY IT IS. For all you good-2-shoes out there, get over it.
-Britton is suspended for 5 games. that is half the season (almost). Wehn he comes back, he may not even get in the game.
When I add these together, I agree with Phil. Phil could easily have said 'your done'. Instead, he burnt Britton's butt a bit, but let him see a little hope. Britton may never see pro ball now, so Phil is giving him a final chance to be a team member, but also maybe a wakeup call to what he has done to himself.
I wish some of you would mature and realize that these are human beings, not robots, and that a cookie cutter isn't the answer.

While it may not matter in the eyes of some, 3 or 4 of the infractions he had were before he was a UT player. Remember he paid his own way as a freshman and went about as a non football player.
If he was smart, he would have not admitted to anything and then a good lawyer would have probably gotten him off. I read a stat that something like 60 percent of all DUI can be thrown out on technicalities....I am not saying it would have been right, but if he were smarter.
Speaking of Johns at Alabama...I was talking to an Alabama student today that was saying that nobody down there was shocked because this kid was known as the biggest dealer on campus. They were more shocked it took this long to bust him.

Colquitt's worst punishment will be the feeling he has watching the Vols on Aug 30. That will stay with him forever. He will pay his dues and move on. I'm with Phil on this one.
Hard to pile on a college-age kid for what I guess is a serious misdemeanor. He was lucky no one was hurt and should and is paying, it appears.
Delaying is a time-honored tactic.

iam4ua, once again, answer the question. Did you feel the same way about your gun-toting all-SEC linebacker? Did you come out publicly and say he should have been dismissed immediately? If you did, you were one of the few. Like 99% of the Bama fans, I'm sure you justified playing that guy. So don't bother throwing rocks at us. You've got plenty of institutional control problems in your own house to deal with. (Player selling cocaine inside the football complex??? And nobody knew??? Oh brother.)

mparker,
from your 11:16 post yesterday,
I am all for giving people second chances. Hell, some folks maybe even need more. However, there are times when people are so privileged that the only way they will ever "learn a life lesson" is to have someone say "enough is enough".
I look at Morely and what he had to endure. He had to fall flat on his face and even lived in his car. Took someone saying "this is it". I wonder how successful many people could be if someone had stepped up early in their lives and laid down some serious consequences.
I'd be curious of what you would say if it was your daughter he hit and killed instead of a parked car. Wonder if you would be as forgiving.

Just hope Colquitt learns from this and goes on to have a stellar half-season or so. Thinking back to college days, its hard to pile on a young kid who thinks they know it all.

I don't need a lecture. my son's car was hit be a drunk driver, and it caught fire. dammit, I'm not saying the kid should go scott-free. what I AM saying is Phil's punishment seems to be one that is desinged to get the most impact on Britton.

mparker,
If you saw what I posted as a lecture, then you are the one with the problem. What I am saying is I don't feel Phil's punishment is/will have the biggest impact. This is the 5th offense. Not the firsts, but the 5th.
If you want to make an impact, make this kid actually have to work for something he loves for a change.
I'm sorry about your son and I hope he never has to experience that again. It is a very scary and helpless feeling.

What is unfortunate is that if it were most anyone else, they would have been nailed to the wall. Favoritism in life exists, and I've come to accept that concept. However, when it impacts people's lives, thats a different story.

iam4ua,
There are 2 reasons that I know of that take away a persons right to carry a gun. 1 is if they are a convicted felon and 2 is if they plead guilty, are found guilty or plea bargain to domestic violence.
I'm not sure if your bama linebacker qualifies for any of these, but if so...there is your answer.

Dustin avoided potential tragedy by mere minutes. I know the owner of the parked car and he was only 20-30 yds away from his car when the accident happenned. He had been out with some friends and was returning to his car and witnessed the whole thing. A few more minutes and he would have been in the car when Dustin barrelled into it. As I said before, this wasn't some minor thing. He hit the car pretty hard, on the driver's side. My friend could have been seriously injured if the timing had just been slightly different. Luckily, it wasn't. But I'm left to wonder if those of you who don't think he got off easy would feel the same if he had seriously injured someone? Would his priors have made you feel different then? The fact is, he's been given chance after chance and still hasn't learned. I have sympathy for Dustin as he is apparently in the grips of a terrible disease, alcoholism, but at some point he needs to take personal responsibility when it comes to seeking help. And in my opinion, it should have been several priors back. Most any other player would have been dismissed from the team, but not Dustin. Why not? The only thing I can figure is his last name. I am a huge Big Orange fan, and as much as it hurts me to admit(lol), football isn't the end all, be all of the universe. He should not have been allowed to stay on the team because of his famous family or because he could potentially help us win games. It's three strikes and your out, not five strikes and we'll just ignore it and hope it goes away. If the team represents the university, do we really want our reputation to be it's all right to drink and drive? Little, Goodrich, and now Colquitt. I hate casting any negative aspersions on our Volunteers, but CPF really needs to take a harder stand on this. Dustin, in my opinion, should have lost the privelege of representing UT. I only hope in all of this that Dustin has finally found help. I hope this isn't just another case of "well he made a mistake and let's move on". Once or twice is a mistake, five times is a habit. For his sake, I hope he has recognized he has a problem, and it's not getting caught. Please get help Dustin if you already haven't.

As usual, iam4ua, you are wrong. Your illustrious linebacker as I recall missed one or two games and was back on the field. Two, it's OK to carry a gun if you have a carry permit which he did not. Again, tend to your own backyard before spreading mess in ours. Looks to me like you've inherited our position as a team with the most bad actors.
Good post BSweet. Colquitt should have been booted and the same thing should have happened to that Alabama LB with the gun charge. But, alas, most coaches are going to do what's convenient and not make the hard choice. (And don't bother mentioning Saban and the drug dealer. He had no choice on that one. A monkey could have made that decision.)
Wish I could remember the LB's name. I'm having a senior moment.
