Football coaches generally don’t like recruiting surprises — but in this case, offensive coordinator Dave Clawson will make an exception.
“I know I surprised coach Clawson a little bit with the timing,” said UT’s newest commitment, quarterback Josh Nunes from Upland (Calif.) High School. “I called him up on the way back from a camp and just committed right on the spot.”
And there it was. UT’s 11th commitment of the 2009 class came in the form of a 6-foot-4, 211-pounder, who is widely considered one of the top 20 pocket passers in the nation.
“I’m a pro-style quarterback,” Nunes said, describing his game. “I take a lot of time in studying the game. I believe in my abilities to read defenses. Once I do that, I can get the ball to the receivers.”
It’s not that UT deemed Nunes a long shot — far from it. The Vols felt good about their chances of landing Nunes, who threw for more than 2,200 yards and 19 touchdowns.
However, UT coaches surely figured Nunes would need to visit Knoxville (which he hasn’t) and/or see Clawson’s offense in a game (which he hasn’t).
“I formed a good relationship with coach Clawson,” Nunes said. “I can tell he’s the kind of person that will put in the work to get things done. I’m very confident in his ability to coach the offense. I’m sure things will be good.”
As for campus life, Nunes said, “I’ve done a lot of research on the schools I’ve been looking at. You can’t go wrong at Tennessee. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I just felt like I should jump on it.”
And so the Elite 11 camp invitee announced his decision over scholarship offers from Florida, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Arizona State among others. Nunes seemed unfazed by the recent commitment from quarterback Bryce Petty from Midlothian (Texas) High School, who chose UT over Portland State and New Mexico.
“Anywhere there’s going to be competition,” Nunes said. “I’m coming into compete no matter what so, overall, it didn’t affect my decision.”
Petty said his commitment to UT was still solid even with Nunes’ commitment. As a lower-rated prospect than Nunes, most would say Petty will be the underdog when the two compete for playing time. Petty doesn’t see it that way.
“It’s definitely a motivating factor,” Petty said. “He is higher ranked than I am. I can’t really say anything until we strap it up.
“I know he’s going to go compete and so am I. Whoever gets it, gets it. I’m confident in myself that I’m just as good as he is.”
Petty and Nunes have both said they are willing to redshirt their first season at UT in 2009. That would still give both a chance to compete for the starting job in 2010 against redshirt freshman B.J. Coleman and sophomore Nick Stephens.
The Vols seem well equipped to move on without Sarasota (Fla.) High School quarterback Casey Kelly, who was drafted with the last pick of the first round by the Boston Red Sox in this spring’s amateur baseball draft.
Since being drafted, Kelly has said all along that he expects to pursue a professional baseball career instead of a football career at UT this fall. Kelly told the News Sentinel this week that he expects to sign his contract in the first week of July.
Under the tentative stipulations of the agreement, Kelly wouldn’t be able to play college football for five years once he signs with Boston.
Nunes is UT’s seventh commitment since June 12. Given UT’s recent success, perhaps sudden commitments shouldn’t be that surprising.
“I just woke up feeling really good about Tennessee,” Nunes said. “Things are rolling for them right now and it was the right time to pull the trigger.”

Welcome aboard Josh, you have made a good decision. Great job again Coach Fulmer and Coach Clawson. I know you Fulmer haters are in mourning over the recent recruiting successes, but you can always focus on defensive tackles and keep your negative spin alive. It is all good. GO VOLS!

WAIT!!! Here's your next starting QB for the University of Tennessee, boys...check out his videos on rivals, they're free. Looks like this recruiting class is well on its way to a top 10 finish. IT'S GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!

I wonder how Vol13 is going to spin this one negative?

Definitely check out his videos. He definitely has a lot of arm strength. Some of his throws are so long and quick that the camera can't keep up with them. He is also clocked at just over 4.8 in the 40 which means he will be able to move the pocket around. Perhaps him and Stokes can create a nice little QB-WR combo.

Great job! GO VOLS!!!

dont take this negatively but by the way people were reacting, i thought he was an ELITE QB.
he's the 10th rated pro-style QB and 181st overall prospect.
GOOD get but seems the expectations in recruiting have been lowered as well.

well, he still has his senior season left and wasn't Erik Ainge a three(or four) star coming out of the Pacific coast!! I'm just sayin', it is not the amount of stars (though they would be nice) that a player has next to his name, it is the heart and drive of a player to get better!!

Unless he gets hurt, his ratings will go up, probably a bunch.

On scouts there are only 5 QBs rated higher than him who have not committed. He is a 4 * andis listed as the 18th best QB on scouts. Compare this to -
Schaeffer who was a 4 * and ranked 14th
Ainge who was a 3 * and ranked 26th
Compton who was a 5 * and ranked # 3

Very well said. This guy has tremendous developmental potential...and to come here all the way from California means STRONG commitment. By the way...he did mention his strong relationship with Coach Fulmer too so I don't mean not to congratulate him as well. It seems like Coach Fulmer is restoring some of the old fire he had in his best days. That is outstanding and can only help pave the way to some renewed top five performances.

It does appear that Coach Fulmer has rededicated himself to getting Tennessee back to the top. That would cement his legacy at Tennessee and have him going out on good terms.
I wonder if Chavis is feeling the pressure to break through on some big time defensive recruits? It would be great to have a story or two written about Chavis and his staff by KNS on our efforts in this area. The defense showed some flashes of toughness last season at year end. If we could build on that with some newly signed defensive studs it would be terrific.

Hey tngeoff,
Dare I say that you are coming back to Fulmer's side??? He seems to have made the hires that are bringing in the results. Are you optimistic this will translate on the field or do you feel we still need change at the top?
Posted by VOLinDAWGland on June 25, 2008 at 7:39 a.m. (Suggest removal)
wow...I did not expect this. Seems we're getting our mojo back. Now let's go get some DTs and a couple of stud LBs.
I was reading about this kid...very intelligent, seems to be a great kid not as ego centric as the QB prospect from San Diego.
The change I'm seeing in this class is not just the chasing after the obvious studs but a careful selection of good player/athlete with high intelligence and character. This should translate to a few close wins and will allow Bama, FSU, FL, Miami, VTU, UGA and others to blow past us in the police blotter sweepstakes.
A pool of high character/great athletes will attract high character great athletes.

Just saw the videos on him.
Big arm but a soft touch on the ball. He is tossing it around like it's a tennis ball out there.
I think he probably would have doubled his TD output last year if he had any receivers who could stay on their feet after the catch!!
His profile pic looks just like a TN QB. Can't wait to see a white helmet wrapped around it

Hey Savage,
Any news on if we are in the running for Jamarkus McFarland, DT from Texas? I know it's tough to pull a top one out of there but I saw on Rivals they listed TN as a possibility... of course I think everyone is listed as a possibility for TN as well. So what's the real shakedown?
Posted by tngeoff on June 25, 2008 at 7:56 a.m. (Suggest removal)
nicksjuzunk.
Hey Bro'. Last year I said many times, for all the desire to replace Fulmer, myself included at several points, I just didn't see any easy and rapid transition that made any sense whatsoever outside of current coach. I said that the best guy, if he could retun that spark, to return Tennessee football to glory was Coach Fulmer. It appears that he has regained a good level of that spark. I am sure his new hires have helped, but they wouldn't be here if not for Coach and that is credit I have already given him in abundance. Stepping outside HIS comfort zone and trying something radically new. In my opinion, if this comes to fruition, Coach Fulmer will be able to leave when he wants to and in an honorable fashion. NOTHING could be better for Tennessee football.

He sounds great! However, frankly, if he is smart enough to get into Harvard of Stanford, I am surprised he chose UT. Hey, it's my alma mater, but if I could've gotten into schools like that I would have jumped at the chance....especially if given a free ride!

Agreed Volindawg
i've noticed that trend as well. Im tired of hearing about all the arrests and negativity off the field. Im sure Fulmer and staff are tired as well. As long as their quality athletes their intellegence will make up the difference if you have a smart man coaching them, and I think clawson is that guy, but time will only tell. Anyways this is great news, go vols

tngeoff,
Well said. I just don't know why others can think reasonably like that. I mean doesn't it seem like some people really want the team and players to fail in order to justify their own opinions?
I still remember after victories last year how some would come on here and be upset about it because we shouldn't have won... blah, blah, blah.
With that reasoning, go on back to the NC year. Syracuse was 1 pass intereference call away from a win. Florida was one field goal from extending the game, Stoerner laid the ball on the ground like a honeybaked ham and we still needed K.State and UCLA to lose their last game to get in! Didn't hear all the "backing your way in" talk then though. Never-the-less, my wife requires that I clean now so I will leave my post and do some husbanding.

VOLinATL,
I am also looking at the kid having Stanford and Harvard on his list. That is a great sign IMO. He should be great as far as soaking up Clawson's offensive system. If he has a solid understanding of the system due to mental abilities and can make the throws then watch out!!!
He may be ready to jump in right after Crompton completes two years.

Between Coach Pearl and Coach Summitt, Coach Fulmer and his staff have a lot to compete with in terms of nationally respected recruiting classes.
Competition is good. It can make you work harder and tunnel in more than you normally would.
It sure does look like there's a fire in the belly this time around.

You're right. As for me? If a loss is ugly, I'll say so. If the trend is to the worse. I'll say so. Now..things look great on paper. So I say so. About the National Championship? I have never said, nor would I ever say anything except we deserved it. Pretty much every team that ever won a National Championship required many breaks along the way...that's just part of the game. Look at LSU last year. Dang. I don't take anything away from them either. They won the only game that mattered. That's what it's all about. We did the same. Now...let's win another! By the way...not you...but I love to hear guys chortle about "fair weather fans" and such. Everybody on here that's not posting from another school wants the same thing. Some just express it differently. Keep the Faith!

I say it is time (actually beyond) for Fulmer to put a foot up Chavis's rear and get him moving. If he still doesn't move, then give him a foot out the door.
Chavis already looked bad and disconcerned, but the new coaches are making him look reaaalll bad.
Just shows it not just what a coach can or has done, but how much excitement he IS bringing.
Can't expect players to get fired up with the level of energy the coaches HAVE shown the last few years.
This is a change, lets hope it goes through the whole staff and to the players to get that extra yard per play on the feild.

Why are we getting so excited about getting good recruits? Maybe not every year but at least once every 3 years we have a solid recruiting classes, this is nothing new. Problem is all they ever accomplish is a 8 to 10 wins season, IMO due to coaches not developing this 4 and 5 star talent. Hopefully with the coaching shake up we can get back to the level we were at in the mid to late 90's.

First, this isn't cards, so you shouldn't call unless you know, Otherwise it immediately challenges your point.
Potential doesn't derive production on field.
Won't matter if the rest of the defense is great (which has to be proven) if the line allows 4-5 yards each play before they meet up with the "great" part of our defense.
If it was about what potential there was, then AL and FL would not have happened last year, never mind all that has occured the last few years.
However, I take from your comments that you do expect great things from the defense this year. Thats good, there shouldn't be any excuses then.
Hope that it happens on the field.

VOLinATL - Harvard does not give athletic scholarships. In fact, none of the Ivy League schools give athletic scholarships. They made a pact called the Ivy Group Agreement back in the 1940's to prohibit athletic scholarships. This was even before the athletic conference was even formed.
That being said, he might have made a good case for an academic scholarship, but those have a lot of competition, and athletes are not given any preferential treatment. In fact, some say athletes have a harder time than normal students because the school doesn't want to appear to give preferential treatment.

I hope I hear as much praise for Fulmer and the new staff as I've heard negative over the past few years. This is absolutely great for the program. 10 commits for 09 and 08 hasn't even started yet. I suppose some of the fire fulmerites could say that commits aren't signee's....so be it. If you'd been paying attention, which apparently you haven't, Clawson's offense has been discussed adnauseum. His is not an exclusive spread offensive system, it is more a West coast hybrid but is flexible enough to adapt to the skill set of his players. If he's got a great athlete for QB then it might be more spread oriented, if pro style QB than more pro style/West coast type of look.
Now pay attention and stop asking stupid questions.

volinky,
I can understand your concern for the "west coast" guys. However, I think if you look at things across the board the west coast QB's did well. Clausen was on the the all time passing leaders at UT and Ainge was a 3 ish plus year starter.
One of my friends and I have talked about the idea that the west coast guys lack the true passion for SEC football. The rivalries and the true "hatred" for the Bama's, and Florida's out there. Hopefully we can get someone in that at least hates to lose...

I don't remember having so much quality QB depth spread out over the classes. We always seemed to have a huge gap between the senior starter and the next starter and ended up relying on a Frosh to emerge...dangerous business that. We've got Crompton, who's been seasoning for three years for two, we have Nick Stephens who's been around for two, BJ one, two good looking Frosh coming in of which at least one will RS and possibly Stokes coming in next year who will likely RS. We appear to be in great shape at QB for at least 5-6 years. That's a great recruiting asset for top WRs, RBs and lineman prospects.
I have a hunch that if Nick holds down the 2 spot we might see BJ transfer to Duke. Hope not, but wouldn't surprise me.

"I wonder if Chavis is feeling the pressure to break through on some big time defensive recruits?"
Maybe. A 4* DT from FL, Corey Gaines, mentioned the effort Chavis was putting into his recruitment. Apparently JC has cultivated a very strong bond with him.

waterskier, you should really keep up or stop posting in ignorance. There was an article someone linked to that originally ran in the business section of KNS concerning Clawson. Basically, he was working with a guy on the lead edge of the West Coast O. The article inferred that Norm Chow and others borrowed heavily from one of Clawson's most influential mentors.
BTW, Clawson was a finalist for the BC job and has been on the target lists for NFL teams. MH and CPF might have gotten ahead of the curve by hiring him. They seem to be taking the same tack in recruiting.

Not sure i agree on ainge being "average at best". Give him the WR's and backs and TE clausen (or even peyton) had and he is easily above average. That is when he was under Cutcliffe's wing. Under Sanders he blew.

Anyone else notice how much character and grades have been at the forefront of UT's scholarship offers so far?
I've been mystified by several of the OL offers and commits... especially considering some of the guys that seem to be better prospects that UT has cooled on. I wonder if they've detected character or academic question marks with those guys?

Marc_ash,
Agreed. It is the passion, or lack thereof, which concerns me. I loved Clausen and Ainge, but they were no Shuler, Kelly, Manning, etc. But, I realize we cannot compare one's home with their heart. In hindsight, no one played with more passion than Casey Clausen in the overtime game with Bama his senior year...

Those jerks ALWAYS take the bait.
Here, usual suspects, are a few terms that should soothe you:

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a flooding of recruits coming in on the defensive side of the ball. Chavis has always gotten the talent into Knoxville, so I see no reason why this year would be any different.

TJ,
I let my wife know who was in charge when we got married. I've been taking orders ever since :0
Besides she's got a two month old attached to her so I better stay in line.
I won't name names since I cannot say for certain, however I will cite circumstances which I think most long time posters remember.
Especially in the season when TN would lose. The naysayers would come out and almost gloat over the loss just to rub it in the face of those who supported CPF. It the same way. When others would celebrate a hard fought victory, they were the first to come up with a list of "if this didn't happen we would've lost".
This type of attitude communicates to me that there is more interest in self-justification rather than the good of the team.
For counter example (probably not a word), it is easy to see that tngeoff was frustrated with circumstances but he would still celebrate the victories and question how we could do better. If you can't do that, than I don't really know. Thoughts?

volinky,
I agree with that game Clausen played vs bama. I think Clausen "got it" towards the end of his career. I know early on (when I went to one of the fan day's during the orange and white weekend) Casey was an @ss hole. Very cocky and didn't seem to care about anything but being a D1 QB. Think after a while, the passion turned outward from self centered.
I have no issue with out of state talent...but there is something special in saying "that guy is home grown".

Gerry, I really don't know but that could be part of it. It could be that this year's off the field problems forced him to change direction. But I've also read that NCAA rules are coming into effect that will penalize teams in scholarships for kids that don't finish school.
I'd like to think it is Clawson's influence on reruiting as well... that could be part of it.
Posted by sjt18 on June 25, 2008 at 10:12 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Gerry, on second thought, yes. I would suspect that the criticism did play a role for a number of reasons. I think Fulmer is concerned about his own reputation but also the image of the progeram.

Nick: I know what you mean about taking orders.
I think most of the posters of which you speak are really Uber fans..just frustrated that we don't (IMO) operate at 100%. And before you say it, NO, I don't think these boards affect recruiting. It would be pretty boring if all our fans knelt at the altar of the Orange as though it was infallible. It does appear that the staff is righting the ship, however.

Gerry,
I don't think it was either of those...I think that Fulmer saw all the comments written about him on GVX and realized he needed to do something about the program just to prove the naysayers wrong.

I agree that there are many passionate fan's that take it personally when expectations fall short. Hopefully, those same fan's can see the changes that are occurring which they asked for.
Pleasegetrid,
If you are a true fan (and I'm not accusing you of not being a true fan) I would think that you would want to view some things in a positive light at some point. I have read many of your posts where you have called for change. When is that change going to be enough?

I saw on rivals where Marlon Brown was going to the U.S.C. camp, NOT GOOD AT ALL!!!! Hopefully they won't $way him away from us, but they probably will. We need a dominant defensive player to commit, regaurdless what position. We need D-line, but if we get one or two 4-5 star recruites at any position on D, the floodgates may open. GOVOLS!!!!

sjt, good point. I do believe that Coach Fulmer is concerned about the image of the program and, hopefully, the new staff and apparently revised recruiting approach will help polish up that image. It certainly took a beating this past winter -- deserved or not. It is good to see the UT football program getting positive press!
As you alluded to, although most posters made light of our abysmal APR performance this year, I would be willing to bet it was not treated lightly in the UTAD offices. Tied for worst is not a pretty picture. As the senior member of the overall UT coaching staff, maybe it was "suggested" that Coach Fulmer take the lead in polishing up the public image.
Whatever the reasons, there is hope! September ...

I'm not sure if it's just wishful thinking, but he reminds me of a young Peyton Manning, on occasion directing his receiver into position before throwing a TD pass. He has enough talent and intelligence that Clawson should be able to develop. Can you imagine the QB competition!?! All have the physical tools to play, the question is to who has the highest football IQ. Stephens and Coleman aren't exactly chopped liver, but I agree with an earlier poster: somebody is going to transfer. Couldn't find a film on Bryce Petty on scout. Keep 'em coming, Phil! Go Vols! Wow, workin gets grounded for a week and the recruits keep pouring in.
I have a question regarding D Line. When recruiting, do we only go after the best guys still on the board- or do we work to sway the top guys commitments? Seems like you could know a lot more about a player after the senior year, especially concerning size/ strength. Maybe Chavis will try to cherry pick the best right before signing day- or is that not how it works?

marc_ash at 10:14 a.m., gee, and here I was trying not to stir up controversy!!!! ;>}
However, I am fully aware of how much influence us negos/naysayers/doubters/haters/downward-spiralers/anti-Fulmers/yada/yada/yada have on recruiting and the UT football program. During the last recruiting season, many potential recruits wrote me to ask if Coach Fulmer was really in trouble with the fan base! Of course, I replied as realistically as I could! And, now, even though TDTN has again been banished, we negos/naysayers.... are still in touch with him getting guidance and letting him know that we are carrying on the battle, anxiously awaiting his return!
Sooo ..... now with the uptick in recruiting and more positive national press coverage, I guess that all of us negos/naysayers/.... should be thanked for, finally, forcing change in Coach Fulmer's attitude and approach to rebuilding the UT football program? It's about time he saw the handwriting on the wall. You're welcome and we are glad we could help! ;>}
BTW, before any of you go ballistic and launch an all out attack, the above is simply my futile attempt at humor with a little sarcasm (well, maybe a lot of sarcasm!) thrown in!

RE: SeanJean's espn link.
Another thing I've noticed about the O commits including the OL's... UT seems to be catching them on the way up instead of trying to catch up once everyone else offers. As opposed to what we were speculating within the last couple of weeks... it is starting to look like Clawson and company know EXACTLY what talent looks like and aren't afraid to pull the trigger regardless of who else has noticed a player.

After cutting his list, Nunes was still being recruited by UF, OU, ASU, Cal, and Stanford. His list earlier included UCLA and others.
Not that it would matter much to a Bama fan much less coach or recruit... but this kid was considering several 3 schools on academics alone. His GPA is 4.9 which either means he's on a 5 pt scale which very few schools use or else he's taken and gotten A's in several college level courses.

Number of times Bama has been held scoreless by UT

Alabama won't have DJ Hall or Keith Brown to throw to this year so Saban had better concentrate on running the ball because Wilson will be running for his life looking for an open receiver against UT.

Oh btw they won't let ewe on the Elephant site must be why ewe keep showing up on our site. If occasionally you showed some class like some of the Gator fans do on occasion we might see you in a different light. Yet your only apparnt reason for posting appears to be you have a desire to be a washing machine since agitating is your stong suite. Try being objective and not obnoxious for fun and conversation sake. Kindest regards right?

And another thing iam4ua, Bama wasn't on probation when Phil first put them under his boot heel with Peyton. Know your program's history before you start spouting off please.

ONUV - ESPN.com says how he kind of flew under the radar and was a late discovery by these recruiting services, there is a nice scouting report about him on their recruiting section talking about how polished he is and his mechanics are excellent.
Plus, 10th best pro-style QB.....grasp that for a moment, how many high schools in the nation have a senior QB....out of all of those high schools, he is the 10th best from what can be told from the video/scouting.....not too shabby.

Looks like Clawson got his man, seems like he has been after this kid since he took the OC job. If we can round out the recruiting class with some comparable defensive players, then they should finish top 10 IMO and that will make the star watchers happy.

sjt18, 11:06, very well-played sir.
"Vol fans. The ONLY numbers that matter are 42-17."
iam4ua, these numbers mattered just as much when it was said and done:
23-26
14-21
34-41
12-17
14-21
10-17
And for the record, it was 41-17.

Yes the Star 'Glazers' will look to Jean Dixon to know what is in the stars of relevance to the blogites. Some of you youngins don't(and its ok) know who Jeanne Dixon(dif spelling figuring one is right)is anyway. Horoscope queen from past. BTW I don't put no stock in her type noway. Go VOLS keep the quality recruits coming!

The kid is going to have to do some serious growing to be an upper tier SEC QB.

I know it's not rivals, but read what espn.com said about him. Looks like we got a gem for a quarterback.

iam4ua-
Like I said before idiot, Saban didn't "solve" Jimmy's problem. The Tuscaloser PD did. Saban didn't have any choice but to kick him off the team because he'll be in jail for the entire season. They don't set your bail at $120,000 for minor offenses. Way to go Saban! Way to take swift action... right after the TPD. Way to bring it out into the open... right after the local papers put it in the crime log. I can't wait until the investigators get a hold of Ol Jimmy and he starts snitching on the other Bama players that were undoubtedly involved in his drug ring. Y'all pansies might not even be able to field a team when the dust settles. The Bammers will lose at least 5 games this year; mark my words.

Not only did SABAN not deal with it until the kid got arrested, but Johns was in coke rehab last year. I think SABAN knew. Fulmer has by far the cleanest program in the SEC.

I wonder if he's any relation to Troy Nunes, former QB at Syracuse?

Just got an email from my friend in Nashville (Volchaz....he posts here sometimes):
"Message boards at UCLA say that he might be LDS, or mormon. He might choose to go on a two year mission, and that steered them away. Hmmmm.."
I remember Mapu doing that a couple years back. Might be an issue if he does choose to take a mission trip.

This commit came way out of left field. Most people ,including me, thought we would have a hard time getting in his top 5.We were a late offer ,plus he has never been on campus. He will be in by July though.Stokes will be there waiting on him, so everything should stay in good standing.Dave Clawson closed the deal ,but Geg Adkins got things started w/ Nunes.

iam4ua...I hate what happened to the Johns kid, because those decisions he made will change his life. However, to say that Saban is acting quickly on disciplinary issues at UA is in "the eyes of the beholder."

LanceR24,
I'm like you...I don't want to sound like I was disrespecting Clausen, just know that my interactions with him weren't that great. Course, I worked at UT for a stint in the housing dept and spent a lot of time in Gibbs with my friend (w
