Coach Bruce Pearl can't help but notice the irony in Tennessee's basketball game at Florida on Wednesday night.

"Florida's got 21 wins, and they're probably in (the NCAA tournament), but with a win over Tennessee, it's a shoo-in,'' Pearl said. "I remember about this same time last year when we were in that situation. We knew what a win over Florida was for our resume.

"That (win) got us over the top. This would get Florida over the top.''

Tennessee (26-3, 12-2 SEC), which dropped from No. 1 in the national media polls to No. 4 on Monday, has its motivation to beat Florida (21-8, 8-6) when the game tips off at 9 p.m. in O'Connell Center.

"Florida is fighting for their NCAA lives,'' UT All-American Chris Lofton said. "But we need this to win an outright SEC title.''

The teams' records and rankings from a year ago are almost identical when reversed; The Gators were 25-4, 12-2 in the SEC, and ranked No. 5. UT was 21-8, 8-6 in the SEC, when the teams met in Knoxville on Feb. 27.

Tennessee pulled off an 86-76 victory over what appeared to be a tired Florida team that had lost two of three entering the contest.

Sound somewhat familiar?

"This last week was tough because we've been tired and worn down,'' Lofton said. "When we get some days off, we'll be fine.''

By Wednesday night?

"I hope so, but we really haven't had a day off,'' Lofton said. "Last Wednesday was supposed to be a day off, but we couldn't get back from Vandy because of weather Tuesday night and then our bus broke down on the way back.

"We were stuck on the side of the road for about an hour and ended up in a Hardee's in some town we'd never heard of.''

The Vols will need all the energy they can muster against a hungry, young Gators team that proved willing to run with UT for 40 minutes in the teams' first meeting - a 104-82 Tennessee win in Knoxville on Feb. 5.

Florida is second to UT in scoring in SEC games, averaging 75.8 points per game to the Vols' 78.9 points.

"I remember that first Florida game this year was a fun game, up and down,'' UT center Wayne Chism said. "But they spread us out, and there was a lot of running around. I don't want to get tired like that again.''

Orange Slices: UT's next win will break the school record for most wins in a season. . . . The Kentucky contest broke a string of 10 games the Vols had out-rebounded their opponents. . . . UT is the only team in SEC history to have four different players earn SEC player-of-the-week honors in the same season. . . . Pearl said J.P. Prince will continue to work at point guard, but that Jordan Howell could get back in the mix with strong practices. . . . UT remains No. 1 in the RPI rankings and its schedule ranks as the second-most difficult in the country.

Just win!
The first game this year was close most of the way. The title has to be earned and Florida is not an easy out, but what an opportunity! Besides all that, the gator grumblers on these posts of late are deserving of some occasional disappointments. I expect UF will be in the NCAA, hopefully not at our expense. Chris has it right:"We need this game....!" The gators want this game and they aint gonna give it away. Take 'em Vols! Beat 'em! Go Vols!

I hope the Gators and as many SEC teams as possible get in and go deep in the NCAA. Let's win at Florida and clinch the SEC!!!!!!!

I think Florida is about to get handled. Kentucky and Vandy beat us by taking advantage of our one dimensional players. Ex: when Ramar and JP got the ball on the perimeter, their man didn't leave the paint.

Billy has been complaining all year about his players' lack of defense. The numbers show that he isn't just blowing smoke. 90 points? somewhere in that range...

No offense to anybody BUT the Prince at PG experiment needs to be shelved til the off-season. He was absolutely lost during the few minutes he played there on Sunday. Don't know what it looked like on TV but watching him after he gave up the ball was like watching a lost kid looking for his mama in a department store - and everything broke down as a result! I'd rather see JuJuan there and JP on the wing if Jordan isn't going to get any minutes. Jordan has definitely struggled the last month but he's still better than JP at the point from a continuity standpoint. Putting JuJuan on top leaves us with the penetration threat as well as the long range threat - defenses would HAVE to play him honest. With JP it's just take his left hand away and dare him to shoot. Just a thought.

We need someone that can hit a jump shot other than Lofton and J. Smith. R. Smith, Howell and Prince can't make a shot beyond 5 ft. The defense doesn't even guard these guys outside knowing they are no threat. T. Smith is consistent and really the guy that has held this team together.

Please make the FREE THROWS. R. Smith's brick on the front end of the 1 & 1 just about cost the KY game!

mcbrimm1998. is that the year you were born? Grow up and talk basketball. Oh, yeah, you probably don't want to do that in here this year.

i think tenn makes a statement in gainesville. i think pearl will make it a point to his team about how symbolic it would be to clinch the SEC title on the home floor of the defending SEC champ and 2 time defending national champ.

i also think peal will remind them of how they were not ready to play the first time around and were down double digits early at home.

i think tenn wins big.

florida will have to beat ky at ky without patrick patterson.

Hey, you guys show mcbrim some love.. If you go to www.utsports.com and click on FLORIDA you get the gators home page ALL BAD..MAY NOT GET TO DANCE, LOST TO TENN. 104-82 I would not want to read that either if I were him I would stay here on KNS and see if I could TEE some VOL FANS off. If donovan has another year like this year he will go to ORLANDO not the MAGIC but U.C.F.

I wouldn't call this a roll reversal, exactly. After we beat the Gay-tors last year it vaulted us to a number 2 seed in the tourney. The Gay-tors are playing just to barely get in at this point. They might be an 11 or 12 seed. IF the bums even make it in.

Hey Gator fan, hush. We all know that you own Fulmer and can kick a Fulmer football team around like a rag doll. We all know that. Some may refuse to admit it but the numbers don't lie. As a matter of fact Fulmer had to have the refs give UT a game to have a winning 2-1 record over Ron Zook, who did awful at Florida. But having said all that, this is big orange basketball and this is Bruce Pearl you all are messing with. You can't even beat Pearl with you best teams, so don't think you can beat Pearl with this young team. Even if we are a little tired and even if you do have us in Gayville.

I agree, we need this one as much as they do. Gator boots and bags all night baby. Skin em and leave em cryin about "we just didn't get the breaks", or "we just didn't get it done" Billy "I can't make up my mind" Donovon...

Run it up boys, your due a good game!

Go vols

McB - A question on what you and gator nation think about the upcoming game. Will Billy try to run with the Vols, or go the "run the clock" route ala' KY & Vandy? I admired him for running with us in Knoxville and the Gators hung tough until about the 6:00 minute mark, then they just ran out of gas and got blasted. The current "strategy” for beating the Vols seems to be to play slow down basketball on offense and on “D” smother Lofton and J Smith and foul everyone else. Its hard to think of the Gator’s going “Ugly Ball” but it does give them the best chance to win. How do you think Billy D plays it?

The Indiana job is the only job Pearl might leave for. If he gets the Vols to the final 4, much less wins the thing, he will be made the highest paid basketball coach in the country. I don't know if he has a "thing" for the Big 10 and/or Indiana but the SEC is a much better conference and at UT he has a chance to do alot of things no one has done here before, instead of following in Bobby Knights wake. If he passes on Hoosiers this year, I think he's here for the duration.

You know what the difference between Gainesville and New Jersey is? The suntan.

McB - Duke Crews is back & Williams is getting more minutes than in the first Gator game, so I doubt Chism gets that tired again. No, I would not call Billy D's normal offense "slow down". They move the ball around for the purpose of getting a back door cut or open 3. They will take the shot early in the possession if it's there. That's alot different than KY which held the ball until 12-15 seconds were left on the play clock before running their set. I am glad to hear the Gator's will run, its just way more fun to watch 104-82 than 65-52. Not score predictions for this game - this one is more like 87-82 Vols.
