NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Nolan Richardson says he is talking with Arkansas State officials about the school’s basketball coaching vacancy.
Richardson has been out of college coaching since being fired by Arkansas in 2002. He made his remarks after a luncheon Monday in North Little Rock.
“I have visited with them, and I will have some more visitations with the (athletic director) and the chancellor,” Richardson said. “I will have some more dialogue with them here in the next day or so.”
The job has been open since Dickey Nutt resigned two weeks ago.
Richardson coached Arkansas to a national championship in 1994, but was fired in 2002 and later lost a discrimination lawsuit against the school. Richardson has stayed in the Fayetteville area since then and has been supportive of Stan Heath and John Pelphrey, the two men who have coached the Razorbacks after he left.
Richardson’s recent coaching experience includes a pair of stints at the international level. He coached national teams from Panama and Mexico.
When the Arkansas State job came open, he said he could entertain the idea of coaching there. On Monday, Richardson was asked if he had applied for the job.
“Applying is one thing, and being able to discuss the job is another,” Richardson said.
Richardson made it clear he still has an itch to coach.
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be Arkansas State,” Richardson said. “It’s, ’Am I through coaching?’ That’s the bottom line. I thought I was, and then I went over to Panama, and then I went to Mexico City. And I’m saying, ’Well, wait a minute. I’ve had six years of vacation. I’m saved up. I can work some more.” ’
Arkansas State has never been able to draw as many fans as the Razorbacks, but Richardson said he believes the program has the potential to attract a large following.
“Winning can do a lot of things,” Richardson said.

Is it a risky deal to hire someone who has sued his previous employer?

Is he THAT desperate to get an Arkansas pension? Bet he'd really like to stick it to the Fayetteville crew from Jonesboro! But, caveat emptor, universities considering Richardson! When he accuses a legend like Frank Broyles of racism, just because he speaks with a Georgia accent and is a Masters member, and challenges him to buy out his contract, and the AD does, it's bad news for everybody. But, the man can coach, and he can also recruit. And, he'd still be close to his ranch in state. BTW, do you guys know that the inventor of the toothbrush lives in Arkansas? In any other state, it would have been called the 'teethbrush.' Go Vols! SAVol

marcnash, I don't think we ever play Arkansas State. If we do it's very rare. Don't think we will notch a lot of vitories over this situation.

I'm here in Jonesboro, and this has been the rumor ever since Dickey Nutt (Houston's brother) was forced to resign. The money boosters at ASU don't want Nolan, and the U of A folks can't stand him. This is a good bball opportunity for someone, and Nolan would draw the crowds, and could recruit Little Rock, Memphis and St. Louuis.

This article does not mention it, but it is rumored that a name high on the list at Ark St. is our very own Steve Forbes

I wouldn't touch this guy with a ten foot pole.
After playing his race card at Arkansas - he has been pretty much black balled in the coaching circles (no pun intended). This guy is a trouble-maker with a capital T.

I would be peaved too if I had coached a team to a national championship when it had never had that laevel of success before. Don't blame Richardson one bit for the suit. Think he was mistaken. His firing just represents an unfortunate trend in sports, not racism on Arkansas's part.

No, straydog. Ark. is full of septic tanks.

Just remember that Frank Broyles also hired him. Was Broyles a racist then, too? I'd think that Nolan would also be able to have recruiting contacts internationally. Remember, he grew up in El Paso, speaks fluent Spanish, and coached the Panamanian team a couple of summers back. He has a Don Haskins' Texas Western (UTEP) connection. He also has former players, who, if not coaching their own teams, would steer players in his direction. If I were the AD, I wouldn't hire him without a clear understanding of the exit strategy. But, Nolan would win games for, what are they called now, the Indians, still? SAVol

Nolan would land all of the criminals...he could easily recognize them becasue he's one himself. He's also a cheat, a liar, and a racist. He'd probably win ASU some games, but at what cost?
