Fowles selected over Parker as SEC Player of the Year
LSU's Sylvia Fowles shoots over Tennessee's Candace Parker on Thursday at Thompson-Boling Arena. Fowles had 17 points and 14 rebounds to lead No. 7 LSU (21-3, 10-0 SEC) over the No. 1 Lady Vols (22-2, 8-1 SEC) by a 78-62 score.

Tennessee did not repeat as SEC women’s basketball regular-season champions and Candace Parker did not repeat as the conference player of the year Tuesday when the league’s individual awards were announced.
Pat Summitt saw a strong connection between the two results, noting the Lady Vols’ 78-62 loss to LSU on Feb. 14. The game ultimately decided the league race in the Lady Tigers’ favor. The Lady Vols coach assumed the outcome also was a factor in LSU center Sylvia Fowles being voted the conference’s top player by the league coaches.
“This is great motivation,’’ said Summitt, referring to all of her players. “If this doesn’t ruffle their feathers, nothing will.
“I was so mad after the LSU game. We quit, and this is the price tag.”
LSU, which went undefeated in conference regular-season play, dominated the postseason awards. Van Chancellor was voted coach of the year and Allison Hightower tied for 6th woman of the year. Fowles also was voted defensive player of the year.
Tennessee’s top honor was forward Angie Bjorklund being voted freshman of the year. The 6-foot forward, who’s sixth in team history for most 3-pointers in a season (62), was named the league’s freshman of the week for the fifth time Monday.
“To be able to come into a very talented team and step in and start and make an impact, that’s hard to do, particularly here,’’ Summitt said. “I was really pleased for her.”
The SEC awards were announced the same day that Kelli Anderson’s article touting Parker as Sports Illustrated’s pick for national player of the year was posted on the magazine’s Web site SI.com.
Parker and Fowles were the only unanimous picks to the eight-player All-SEC first team. UT’s Alexis Hornbuckle also made the team.
Lady Vols point guard Shannon Bobbitt was a second-team selection.
Bjorklund was joined on the all-freshman team by Georgia’s Angela Puleo, who played at William Blount High School.
Summitt did not question Fowles’ worthiness for the top honors, comparing her favorably with UT’s top player.
“Obviously she does for LSU what Candace does for us, as far as giving that great go-to player that carries a heavy load at both ends,’’ Summitt said. “It comes down to what happened in head-to-head competition.”
If so, then the voting impact likely was based more on the game result than the individual performances. Parker recorded 26 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals against the Lady Tigers. Fowles had 17 points, 14 rebounds, three blocks and two steals.
When asked whether she will use the award outcome as motivation for Parker, Summitt said, “I don’t think I’ll have to.”
The players received a list of the honorees as practice adjourned Tuesday. This was another way of trying to put the individual honors into a team context with the SEC tournament looming later this week.
No. 2 seed Tennessee opens at 3:30 p.m. Friday against the Florida-South Carolina first-round winner.
“Candace is more about winning than any individual awards,’’ Summitt said. “That’s where our team’s focus will be.”

Wow, I do not think the numbers or the general perception support Sylvia Fowles over Candace Parker even though I think Sylvia is a great player. I also think that Alexis Hornbuckle has the stats to prove that she should be defensive player of the year. Congratulations to all of the all-SEC players.

I'm reminded of the time 12-14 years ago, when the NBA MVP award was presented to David Robinson before the first game of the playoffs. Hakeem Olajuwon, who had been out a good bit of the season with thrombophlebitis in his leg, looked on during the presentation, and then, showed David (who is first among the troika of George Gervin and Tim Duncan of my all-time favorite Spurs) who the real MVP of the league was. He really played inspired basketball, and the Rockets eliminated the Spurs from the playoffs. I expect that Candace Parker will do the same for Sylvia Fowles. Go Lady Vols! SAVol

txsvol...that's a great example! I was thinking exactly along those lines...I hope it does fire up Candace to play some inspired basketball the rest of the way out. Fowles is a great player, but I think most of the country would agree that Candace is the better player. We'll see who is taken first in the draft.

UConn would kill us if they played today. Nicky and Angie have to get some points for us. Hornbuckle has not been the same since she missed a game for some mysterious illness or injury. UT has some serious improving to do to make it to the final against UConn.

This is ridiculous. I would like to see the votes to see who made these choices. Parker is the smoothest player to hit the court and she could dominate a game if she were not such a team player. It is an absolute insult. I only hope she looks at it that way and she will use it to motivate her to show everyone just what a mistake this really is.

lnbadger320: Are you serious? Candace Parker doesn't have a jumpshot? Right, and Tennessee's colors are maroon and gold.
Candace Parker has already proven she can play on the professional level. She played along Olympic-level talent, so the upper echelon of pro talent, and was a leading scorer.
She has transformed women's basketball and there will not be another Parker for a long time to come. One who plays all five positions and does so with ease.

Right, she was widely recognized as the best player in the entire country last year, and is the obvious #1 pick in the WNBA draft... all because those people who are going to spend a lot of money on her are too dumb to realize that Candace can't shoot a jumper and apparently don't realize that players like her in the pros are a dime a dozen. Good grief...

Just another example of sec bias toward the BIG ORANGE. Jealousy makes all kinds of bedfellows.
Will admit that Fouler was the best at standing within arms reach of the basket with the protection of the zebras, but Player of the Year encompasses more than that, at least everywhere else.

Candace can do whatever she wants to on the basketball court. She has more ability than any player that I have witnessed in the Lady Vol program ever. This should be "her" team, along with Hornbuckle and Anisike. Unfortunately, Anisike is the only one who has put her best effort into this season.
The team takes possessions off at times. They play with a cavalier attitude and appear to worry about looking uncool by working hard enough to break a sweat. If they recapture some intensity they may get to the final four but they just don't have the work ethic to beat U Conn. Parker and Hornbuckle should be leading...not coasting.

Hopefully, Parker and the rest of the team will show everyone this weekend who the top team in the SEC is, then on to Tampa and the big prize !!!
One piece of advice, listen to Coach Summitt. She has been there and done that 7 times.......
Effort, defense & rebounds!!!!
Whatever happens, thanks for a great season. We will always love ya'll for being Lady Vols.

can't win them all, but truth be told, would take Candace over Fowles in the end, if head to head is important key, then Candace still did more in the game they played,
I dont think Candace is doubting her ability, or what she is and what she has done for Lady Vols basketball and the sport the past couple of years...

This will probably be a good thing for Parker. She can be the greatest ever, but she needs to keep a fire burning every game. Motivation like this, if properly channeled, could carry her and her team a long way. No one can coast to greatness in the professional ranks.
Fowles is a dominant force inside, especially defensively, and she carries her team.

Fowles is a great player, she may not be as talanted as Candace but she sure brings it every game. Candace hasn't had the intensity that she should have had this year.
Candace also has a much better supporting crew at UT, verses LSU. LSU came to our house, and blew our doors off.
The bright star in this article is Angie, she is gonna set a bunch of records at Tennessee if she avoids injury

Personal awards mean squat toward winning the bigs. LVs had a perfect scenario for helping themselves to SEC outright. Pat said it in plain talk, "we quit in that contest." When they were down by a 19, Tigers were positioned to quit, but they stayed the coarse, kicked orange butt while we lay pouting. That's how the game is played. All season we haven't had the killer instinct. Such a cliche, but a true description of "08 LVs. We've been positioned to knock off opponents in many games, but we've been lackadaisical, lazy, chest bumping and show boating. We've allowed teams to play hard and come back forcing us to scrap to win. Stanford took away our inside game. LSU wanted that SEC title, they've whipped our butts before, they've seen our vulnerabilities, they smelled blood in the water. They had confidence to keep on scratching, They shamed us on our home court. They got what they came for and MORE. Fowles got that award because she beat the "heralded best." How could you say she did not deserve it? They earned it. LVs voted Fowles by giving LSU that game. LVs helped them win by quitting. LVs cannot give away a decisive home game and expect the voters to "look over" that blatant loss. Voters could have said, "Oh well, Tennessee got smacked in a game that would have decided the SEC title outright by an undefeated team, but oh well, let's give this POY and defensive POY award to them anyway because they ARE Tennessee. After all, they WERE up by 19 or 20 points there in the first half. They COULD HAVE buried LSU if they wouldn't have quit." Do we even want to repeat or are we just ready to hang up our sneakers and get on with our Spring break? Do we believe UConn is capable of winning it all? They do, after all, have not only the smoothest player in a freshman body. They do have a supporting cast of double digit scorers who are geno disciples motivated by the threat that if they don't get him another banner they will spend their off season on an iceberg in Siberia or Storrs Arena, whichever comes available first. That little man wants payback and he won't spare any means to get it. Do we believe North Carolina, a team that we squeezed by earlier in the season is primed to go to the finals? They buried Duke who we barely defeated. They too want revenge for last season's defeat. Do we believe we CAN win? Are we willing to play Tennessee post season basketball for 40 minutes? Those are the things I would ask the team if they hooked up on the truth reality show.

Hey 98reax
Uconn is more than capable of winning it all. They won the Big East. Also beat the #1 team in the ACC (NC), SEC(LSU),Pac10(Stanford), Colonial Athletic(ODU) & America East(Hartford).
Pat will not be able to avoid Geno much longer. Then again she might if UT continues to play at their current level.

If I recall, last year, we lost to LSU in SEC tournament, we lost a couple of games big to teams like UNC and Duke during season, many people assumed we would neve rmake final four, Maryland would beat everyone.
I personally will still wake up and continue on if we don't win the SEC or the NCCA final game, but the sky is'nt falling either. WE have as good a chance as a handful of other schools, and reality is there are sevral programs who have achieved that level, and the fact that more girls are playing, more schools are adding to program, etc, is tribute to UT and its program over the years, but yes, championships are harder to get, and thats ok .
Last I saw we were #3,and we have played and beaten more top 25 teams this season than anyone.
Go lady Vols, win or lose, you are the envy of the rest, and deservedly so.
Sorry, my rant for the day, but between this article and others, so much negativity... and for no reason

I've never in my life seen a bunch of whiney brats like the die hard Lady Vol basketball fans. Why can't you all understand that there are other teams and other players besides here in Knoxville. Now just except the fact that Fowles is a better player than Parker. That is why LSU beat us on our home turf.

Fowles supporting cast played better then Parker supporting cast when they played in Knoxville. This team last year was not the favorites to win, but they did. I look for these awards to motivate the ladies to win another championship. If I was starting a team I would pick Parker over Fowles any day. She can do it all. So bring home the SEC championship and like I said " let your haters be your Motivaters." Go Lady Vols!!!!!!!!

I don't understand why Pat can't get these women to play hard. They use their talent to build leads then squander it away by playing lazily. Then they act suprised when hard working teams come back on them. By the time they get back to work the momentum and flow of the game has gone past them. Then they seem to pout. It's a shame to see a squad with so much promise act this way.

Candace, is of course, the better player. The SEC is, generally speaking, disinclined to have the same player have the award 2 years in a row. It does happen, but not very often. As far as taking UCONN off the schedule, it seems TN has beaten the last 2 or 3 times they played. So I sincerely doubt Pat was scared of Geno. If you really want to know why they were removed from the schedule, as Pat says, "Ask Geno. He knows". Tennessee has every chance of winning the NC this year. It is never easy. Ask Pat. She has done it 7 times. Even without playing UCONN Tennessee still has the highest RPI. The Lady Vols are a class act, UCONN would probably be if they would do something about Geno.

What exactly do you propose be done with Geno? Your drum beat that UT is a class act & Geno is a bum is REAL STALE. Get ready for more Geno as he is the next president of the women's coaches basketball association as voted on by the women's coaches. His term runs for 2 years. As a UCONN fan, I really enjoy reading comments UT fans have about us. I have to give you guys credit because this is one of the first message boards that you guys have actually complemented uconn ball this year. I'm not here to bash, I simply want to comment.
I do feel bad for the fans of UT because I know what a phenomenal player you guys have in CP3-she will definitely go down as one of the top 3 to ever play the game. (Obviously i am a huge Taurasi fan and even though they played different positions and hard to compare, i believe they are in the same company). Keeping that in mind, i do agree with some of the posts that state these players seem to be more worried about appearance this year than winning games. They look a little lazy and I am know this isn't typical UT ball. It is my opinion that Big Syl deserves the award because she did play her heart out this year-remember it's player of THIS year-it is not a career award (which clearly Parker would win).
When she leaves, our fab freshman Maya Moore will be the next big thing-she is already-getting consideration for POY and she should. She scored 29 points against LSU in our 74-69 win (and may i add she had no easy shots). I hear alot of talk about CP3 should automatically get the award because she has played for 3 years and won it last year.-Maybe. She has established herself as the ultimate force in NCAAW but remember it is Player of this Year. The vote will be interesting this year.
Now on to the tournament-UCONN fans never understimate UT tournament time. They are deadly and always come to play and win. They will go far this year no matter how they played up until now. I do have to say though that I believe it is a UCONN national championship year-they are playing with a fire i haven't seen since the Diana Taurasi days. Don't get me wrong-in the past i would be the first to admit it was a UT year when u guys were playing fab bb. I agree that there are many great teams this year, it will be a hard fought battle to the top.
I wish you guys luck in your quest to the top. I hope to see a battle with UCONN and UT in the tournament-fans live for it!
One more note-cut Geno a little slack. You guys really have it out for this guy. UCONN fans have a ton of respect for Pat-she has proven herself (although we despise her at game time). Geno has proven himself as well-different in his approach to the game but a genius. He really is a nice guy and gives his girls praise when not under the watchful eyes of opponents like UT. (And we hear the reason there is no rematch is bec. MM chose to go to UCONN-look it up in wikipedia for Maya Moore
Go UCONN!

I really want to see the Lady Vols win the National Championship but they better decide to get off their bums and begin to play with intensity for 40 minutes. Now,during the conference tournament, would be a good time to start.
U Conn looks to be the best team this year but look out for Maryland...they play with great desire and have talent.
Geno is a great coach. It's his personality while on camera that irritates everyone. Diana Taurasi was the best women's player I have seen. She always came through at crunch time...unfortunately,she had the same on camera personality as Geno.

richvol-
I understand what you are saying about Geno because if I wasn't a uconn fan i would probably despise the guy too-he does have a personality that can rub people the wrong way.
I think Diana had a highly confident personality that came out during high profile games. It's funny you think that about her because I sometimes think that of Candace. It must be because they are so good-it's easy to dislike someone who is that good and have them show it (like they are bragging about their talent). I do believe that is extremely important to have at least one person like that on your team. It keeps the team and the fans pumped.
Undoubtedly, we do have the 2 best coaches in the league. No doubt they will bring our teams a long way!

Besides, now Candace will go off, win the tourney and mvp and average like 30, 15, 5 ast, 5 blks, 3 stls. Then in the ncaa she will go off again. I still think UT can beat Uconn. zjcvols- Those numbers don't lie Candace should have won the award!! She will win all the national awards so that will make up for it.

Hey thanks, madpoly, I've never ever thought anyone read my posts. Your response inspires me again to check in here. So what is the name of your arena? I'm not that knowledgeable on Connecticut geography. I try really hard not to 'rant.' I don't have a lot of positive things to say about your coach, however. I agree with you about one thing. Maya is one of the best collegiate freshmen I've seen since Tamika Catchings and Diana Tuarasi. In my opinion, she's better. Too bad I haven't had a chance to see her play a complete game. It's just that I can't stand to watch you know who. Perhaps I will catch one of her junior national games. Pendav, I too have considered the possibility that we won't meet in the post season. If we do, I'll turn off the TV and listen to the Lady Vol radio network and Mickey Dearstone. At least he doesn't slobber when he calls the game. Most TV commentators talk about everything but basketball. They make me crazy. Talk about a 'rant.' Doris Burke is Queen of Rant. You mean there's no icebergs in Siberia? How about Hartford? I do enjoy your posts, seriously. And it's OK if I don't like geno. He just may be a great guy. I have not seen that side of him. That side of my brain does not function properly. Keep up the good work posters.

98reax....like I said, just havin' some fun! I have indeed enjoyed your posts, and hey, it's ok with me with your feeling over "you know who"...my post was taken by you in the spirit it was intended, tongue planted firmly in cheek.Uconn plays in 2 "arena's" actually. On campus at Storrs is the Gampel Pavilion(fun place, but way too small)and the Hartford Civic Center(oops, it's now the XL center)I have a suggestion...try to watch a Uconn game in its entirety, and cover you're eyes when the camera pans to "you know who"...hey, might as well give it a shot, 'cause if Uconn/ Tenn meet by chance in NCAA tourney, you're not gonna not watch just because of "you know who" now are ya?!!...and just turn the audio off & listen on radio 'cause ESPN announcers are the worst. As far as "icebergs in Siberia", I always thought of an iceberg as an ice mass that floats in water & Siberia as being part of a land mass, until you're question "How about Hartford?"....well seeing Harford is the insurance capital of the world, I guess Hartford is just one big iceberg!!...Thanks for the response, and don't worry about "you know who"...just cover you're eyes...have fun with March Madness!

rabidvol, Of course there are other players except for the ones in Knoxville, but name any of them that won the Mcdonalds slam dunk competition over 5 Guys. Can Fowles play almost any position on the court? Lets go on People saying Mya Moore better than Candace, dont take it away from her she is good, but is she versatile enough to play forward, center, point guard, guard, no and what if she got double teamed would she still be able to take over games? Are you kidding stil plying kiddish games well we should just take Lsu off the schedule if Fowles doesnt give Candace the Trophy, referrinf to Pats comment on Duke fans. Who can blame her did we as vol fans taunt Alana Beard for her past mistakes? No she was doing what a good coach would do defend her players

usmcladyvolfan-
I can understand your disappointment with Candace not receiving the award. I agree that Fowles cannot play any other position on the floor but she is the best center in the game. Being a UCONN fan I have to comment on Maya Moore. I do have to say she is extremely versatile-Yes she can play point, forward, point guard (she shoots 48% from 3 point range-the highest in Big East HISTORY!)-she is double teamed every night and she shoots almost 60%-i believe 8th in the nation-and remember that is all outside-highly difficult shots. She cannot play center because she is only 6'-alittle too small to play with the big girls but she does love to play on the lower block! She also averages almost 19 points a game, 8 rebounds, countless assists and steals.
I am the first to admit that Candace Parker is a phenomenal player-please don't take that away from Maya Moore. As C. Viv. states-she will define the next decade of basketball-she is that good. If you get a chance watch some Connecticut games. Big East tournament starts for UCONN on Sunday at 2 (ESPNU). Is UT playing any televised games soon-i'd like to watch so can anyone pass on this information?
One more note-and yes Maya Moore can dunk!!

ctmom03....SEC Tourney is on Fox Sports South, which is part of our Comcast digital package here in CT(Branford for me).I find it amusing(more like maddening) that I can watch the SEC Tourney, but not the BE Tourney which is carried by ESPNU, which Comcast doesn't have in it's lineup.Have enjoyed your posts...refreshing to have fellow Uconn fan with worthwhile comments, as opposed to the now defunct/banished UconnFan....

's okay. I don't hear the words "greatest player to ever play the women's game" in reference to Fowles outside Baton Rouge. We know.

Hey Mad_poly_utc
FYI I am a big UCONN FAN. Have rooted for Uconn since Jack Rose played for Hugh Greer. Moved from CT to TN 1 year ago but still watch all the men's games on ESPN Full Court & the women on CPTV Hoop Streams.
Big disappointment when I learned that I wouldn't see Uconn in Knoxville this year. TN is a great state but I can't root for the Orange. I still bleed Blue. My Uconn flag is hung in my garage. Uconn women look real good but no depth due to injuries. A quick whistle will kill Uconn in the big dance. Maya Moore is the best freshman I have ever seen. She should make All America 2nd team but probably won't due to her age & the anti Uconn vote.
A quick story about the TN people & Pat S. I bought her book walked into Thompson B Arena in June 2006 & entered the women's basketball office. Told her secretary we were from Ct & asked if we could have the book autographed. Pat was on vacation & her secretary told us to leave the book & she would sign it & mail it to us in CT. We offered to pay for postage but they wouldn't accept our money. Then a student manager came in and give us a tour of the building including Pat's office & team dressing room. Southern hospitality is alive & well. Living in CT for 60 years I know my experience would never take place in Gampel.

Hey mad_poly_utc-
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately I don't get comcast-dish network for me so i do get ESPNU-(had to pay for the extra package but worth every penny to see UCONN play!)
Pendav-Happy to hear about that southern hospitality. When you are a uconn fan you envision Pat being this evil monster-it's nice to hear some positive comments. You have to respect a program that helped to define the women's game as we know it today.
Still-i hope uconn brings it home this year.

pendav...thanks for the response.I'm well aware of you being big Uconn fan, which is why I started a previous post with ? to you. Not surprised by your treatment at UT.I for one have always had great respect for LV program, and I've had great time when visiting Tenn. Close friend lives in Nashville, had great times there, spent few days roaming Shiloh battlefield. Only negetive moment in Tenn was gettin' hit in the head with a rock some dumbass pre teen threw at me in Memphis 20 odd years ago...Hugh Greer huh? Man you're goin' back aways...my first memories are of George Erlich doing play by play on channel 3, with Bobby Stack at point guard(I think) with Dee Rowe at the helm...mid 60's I guess.I spent several yrs living in Chicago(awesome place to live)and it wasn't until moving back here did I realize that New England can be a pretty cold place to live, and I don't mean the weather.I still sometimes just say "hi" to people in supermarkets(common practice in my old Chicago neighborhood)and am met with stony glare as if I'm half out of my mind.Did you see Prov. game last night? Pathetic effort....."quick whistle". You're absolutly right, and I fear after the roughness of Monday's game, that's what we may see if Rutgers/ Uconn hook up in BE final......CTMOM03.....man, you're one of the lucky few in Ct who can get ESPNU.I envy you.Although I have 3 young girls who'll run me ragged all weekend anyway, so why I'm thinkin' I'd watch if I had the U is beyond me!

mad_poly_uct-
I got 3 little ones too-all under the age of 4, so i definitely understand what you're saying! My husband knows that at game time-he takes over. He gets to go fishing April-June while I get "quiet time" most of the basketball season when the game is on. I agree with your opinion on the Prov. game last night (although i have to admit that i get more joy from watching the women play)
Nice to converse with some nice CT neighbors. I'm from Terryville (route 8 area). Very familiar with Branford-beautiful area.
Nice talking with ya!!

ctmom03....I know Terryville! We go up that way(rt 8)when we visit the Berkshires. No shame in admitting you like watching the women more.I do too.My wife is most amused by my habit of always taping the womens game, while sometimes just blowing off the mens game completly. I enjoy the fundementals of the game that are stressed in the womens game & it's not all above the rim slam dunk stuff.Kinda like when I played CYO ball years ago...just a bunch of slow white Catholic kids who couldn't jump, but sure knew how to pass!(don't get me wrong, these women aren't slow, and can jump). So 3 under the age of 4!! God bless ya! Mine are 12,11, & 6. Boy I remember those days....well, not too well.I think the sleep deprivation has affected my memory.Nice talkin' to you too.Go Huskies!!....and my 12 yr old just told me to write GO VOLS!!....lousy little bandwagon jumping turncoat....
