Charles Ford's 6-under-par 65 Tuesday helped the Tennessee men's golf team jump from seventh to a second-place finish in the USC Collegiate Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif.
Ford started the day at 20-over par, but had eight birdies at the North Ranch Country Club to finish tied for 25th at 14-over 227.
The 10th-ranked Vols finished at 37-over 889, four strokes behind the 8th-ranked tournament hosts from Southern California.
"It was probably as good of a comeback from a rough start as I can recall in my coaching career," UT coach Jim Kelson said. "I think it was a very challenging golf course and it got us the first round but they came back and came close to tying for the championship."
UT's Chris Paisley (72) finished tied for third at 7-over 220, two shots behind individual medalist Tim Sluiter of USC (218).
Robin Wingard (75) tied for 18th at 225, Phillip Pettitt (73) tied for 20th at 226 and David Holmes (86) tied for 68th at 239.
