Ashton Ward did her thing and the Tennessee Lady Vols' offense did just enough.
UT's No. 4-ranked softball team eked out a 1-0 victory against Tennessee Tech on Wednesday at Lee Stadium.
Ward (12-1) tied a career high with nine strikeouts in six innings of relief work. The freshman allowed two hits and waited for the Lady Vols' offense to get something going against the Golden Eagles (8-12-1).
"My hat's off to Tennessee Tech," UT co-head coach Ralph Weekly said. "I was not pleased at all with our effort or execution. I think we were fortunate to win the game.
"We may be looking ahead to SEC play, but Tech is a very good team with a very good coach. We should have been more fired up to play."
UT starter Megan Rhodes lasted one inning after walking three Tennessee Tech batters.
The Lady Vols (20-1) got all the offense it needed in the fifth. Kenora Posey earned a one-out walk and scored when Tonya Callahan blooped a two-out RBI double to short right-center.
Tiffany Huff went 2-for-3 and Posey stole two bases to give her 18 this season.
UT opens SEC play in style this weekend by visiting No. 2-ranked Alabama for a doubleheader Saturday and a series finale on Sunday.
