Lott won't stop after knee surgery

There are all kinds of important dates in recruiting. Junior days, official visits and signing day come to mind.

But for Derrick Lott, March 17 is the most important day on his calendar.

That’s the day when the 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive lineman from North Cobb High in Kennesaw, Ga., will undergo surgery on a torn meniscus in his knee.

“I’ll be straight,” Lott said. “I just tore my meniscus. I’ll be up and running by four to five weeks.”

That could be crucial to his college recruitment. If Lott recovers as quickly as expected, he’ll be ready for summer camps and workouts. If not, he’ll have to wait until fall to further prove his merit as a college prospect.

“This (last) season I played on it and it wasn’t hurting me that bad,” Lott said of the knee. “I’m just going to get it better for this season (so I can) run faster in the 40(-yard dash) and jump higher.”

Lott doesn’t have a scholarship offer yet, but that should soon change. He’s already visited Tennessee as one of the many invitees to its junior day last weekend.

“Tennessee was my first college visit,” Lott said. “I liked it. We watched some highlights about Tennessee, talked to all the coaches and saw the indoor facilities. I’m interested in having some more visits coming up.”

Lott is planning a return trip to UT and another to inspect Georgia. Had it not been for a doctor’s appointment, Lott would have already visited Athens.

For now, Lott will just focus on that all-important date later this month and the recovery that will follow.
