GAINESVILLE, Fla. - They got the news they so coveted in bits and pieces Wednesday night.
Chris Lofton happened to look up at the Jumbotron scoreboard during a late timeout and noticed a score: Vanderbilt 86, Mississippi State 85.
"It went through my mind that if we win, we're the outright champions,'' Lofton said later.
Bruce Pearl wasn't informed until after the final horn - after Tennessee had come back from the dead, had overturned a 16-point deficit and beaten Florida, 89-86.
His reaction was predictable for anyone who has observed Pearl the past three seasons:
"Emotional,'' he said quietly.
Everyone who cares about Tennessee basketball has a right to be emotional today. The Vols are the outright regular-season SEC champion for the first time since 1967.
Tennessee won. Mississippi State lost. The race is over, with a game to spare.
The pressure off, the Vols can focus on honoring three seniors in style on Sunday when South Carolina visits Thompson-Boling Arena.
After the final horn, the Vols' reaction was more businesslike than overtly jubilant. They exited the court like warriors.
A few wristbands were thrown up to a gaggle of Tennessee fans on the O'Connell Center balcony above the exit.
Pearl, after planting a kiss on the cheek of Lofton's mom, then Jordan Howell's, embraced long-time trainer Chad Newman.
Waiting in the hallway were Pearl's parents. More embraces. More emotion.
College basketball is in fact a postseason sport. The bottom line is yet to be written.
But for this program, so starved for success and respect, this season isn't just about the tournaments to come.
It's also about the journey to get to those tournaments. Fitting that a school-record 27th victory clinched the first outright conference championship in 41 years.
"He (Pearl) has been preaching we've got a team capable of making history since day one,'' said JaJuan Smith, the senior whose cold-blooded 3-point shooting stopped the Gators in their tracks in the second half.
On March 6, 1967, Tennessee gutted out a triple-overtime victory at Mississippi State to clinch an outright title. To this day, players like Bill Justus, Tom Boerwinkle and Ron Widby are Tennessee heroes.
But players, coaches, administrators and a generation of fans came and went before that distinction was duplicated. Only Bud Ford, UT's veteran sports information director, was on hand for both victories.
This moment Wednesday night wasn't entirely unexpected. Tennessee was a consensus pick in preseason to win the SEC. That didn't make actually winning it any easier.
"Because we were expected to win,'' said Pearl, "let's not celebrate it any less.''
Not much chance of that, coach.
"Being from Tennessee,'' said Tyler Smith, "knowing that four or five years ago Tennessee basketball wasn't nothing to be proud of, it's a great feeling.''
Or, if you will, a wonderful feeling.
"It's a wonderful feeling,'' said JaJuan Smith. "I grew up watching Tennessee basketball and knowing what's gone on in the past, this means a lot to me and my family.''
JaJuan Smith arrived at a program four years ago, along with Lofton and Howell, that wasn't talking about championships, much less winning them.
"That's what this class is about,'' said Lofton, "to make history.''
And that's how it will be remembered, regardless of what else may happen in the weeks to come.

2007-2008 SEC Champions! It never looked and sounded so good!!!!!!!!

These guys are amazing. Even when they were down by 16, you just know it's a matter of time before they cut into the lead. True warriors. Especially Tyler Smith. What a crucial put back he had after Juann missed two free throws. He also kept them in it during the first half. Love these guys.....
Congrats Champions...
Your name now will be engraved on UT's Wall of Fame for all time.

Wow. What's amazing is to see them keep coming at you, no matter what. Knew Gators couldn't keep up that 67% 1st half shooting. As ol' B Bryant, said, "emotion always wear out and talent will take over".
Thanks Vols. Put some icing on the cake with the Gamecocks.

Only thing better than beating Florida? Beating them twice and winning the SEC. What a night, what a team. All the seniors were magnificent, Jordan picked a great night to break out of his slump.
Not to state the obvious, this is a special team. They win games in the 40s and they win games in the 90s. This is an unbelievable feeling and all Vol fans can take pride in this accomplishment and more importantly, take pride in this coaching staff and the young men that make up this team.
BTW, don't get caught up in rankings or polls, winning has a way of taking care of that. Best thing about college ball, the NC is decided on the court, not in the newspapers.
One more time to celebrate at home this Sunday, fasten your seatbelts, this should be a great postseason!
GO VOLS!!!

I was just about to turn 1 year old the last time we won the SEC Championship. Dang I'm getting old and so was the SEC drought. But like the TN program, I am feeling young and rejuvenated. Too bad I am having to celebrate with just my family up here on Shelter Island, New York. TN born and bred from Rhea County. GO VOLS!!!

Did you all get a load of the look on Tyler's face in the second half? This is a cliche, but he was not about to be denied.
He did, however, look like he was about to kill somebody.

Come on Rabidvolfan let's put out your normal hate of UT and say something stupid. And now to the brighter side. Fantastic GO VOLS from 1 who was their in 67 just a still green sophmore from Western Kentucky, 67 was a sweet season to go back home to Ky and not listen to the Cat fans. This one is great to as I have to go to Ky this week end to do taxes. My accountant is a UK grad and I will be wearing my Orange in his office saturday morning. GOOOOOOOO VVVVVOOOOOOOLLLLLLSSS. And to you Rabid KMA.

akkdowl and vol88, you are both babies. Some on this list were students in Kville in '67. Others, like me, were counting the days before we would be there. I was only 16, but knew that I had to escape Delaware, OH, for Big Orange Country since about the time I was in 8th Grade. So relax, you're not all that old and will witness many more exciting championships by the VOLS. Beat the Gamecocks!

Foolmore,
There is no need to be drawing comparisons to football and basketball right now. You'll say you're pointing out facts, but this is an obvious rip on our football program and coach.
Let us celebrate TENNESSEE winning the SEC championship! GO VOLS!
Let's go get that #1 seed!

Honestly, some folks just can't enjoy success without downing something or somebody else. Foolmore, let me give you another recap.
Soon to be announced: Phil Fulmer signs extension to put his contract back to a seven year time frame and gets a raise. Translation: He is YOUR coach until HE decides to hang it up. Continue to waste your breath if you like. Most of us have moved on to more productive discussions. (Namely focusing on the best basketball team this program has ever seen.) Anything else you need a recap on, let me know.

FatherVol, I was 9 in 1967. This has been a long time coming. I teach classes in the semiconductor industry and was teaching a 7pm to 1:30am class last night. My class kept wondering why I was pulling out my Blackberry every few minutes to look at the score. When the game was over, I had to tell them what just happened.
Way to go Vols! Focus one game at a time and keep making history with this team.

Like I've said before Huey, they'd better load up on Tums and Prilosec because it's going to be a long, miserable string of heartburn if they don't. I don't know that I take a great deal of delight because there are still things about this program that I don't agree with (such as the discipline issue). But, if he has the support of Hamilton and the powers that be, there ain't a lot we're going to do about it. So I'm not spending a lot of time arguing about it anymore. Que sera sera.

Foolmore - why, why, why? Your personal vendetta against Fulmer is so great that you must take a feel good story about our first SEC basketball championship in 41 years and use it as a venue for your anti-Fulmer venom. Pathetic - and sad. Give it a rest - go spout your Fulmer venom on some other story and let us enjoy basketball.

We couldn't have picked a better place to clinch the SEC Championship. I remember in 1967 when we won it that year, that night there was a panty raid on what was then called Cumberland Dorm (women's of course). Girls were dropping their laundry from the windows to the male drunkards below, and celebration was everywhere on campus. Political correctness prevents this sort of debauchery nowadays, but maybe the spirit is still in the student body at some level. Hopefully, the football program will at some point have a coach of similar caliber to the Brucemeister.

I wish the pressure were "off," but actually it's just beginning, assuming we're looking for a #1 seed come tourney time. The way to erase all doubt is to win Sunday and, at the very least, get to the SEC champ game. Win it and we're obviously a 1. Lose, we might still be. But we've got to get that far to ensure a top seed. Am I right, or are we safer than that?
Posted by hueypilot on March 7, 2008 at 9:36 a.m. (Suggest removal)
No need for a "panty raid" these days. Not even sure you have to say "man in the hall" What a great basketball season from these unselfish players. Scarcely a UT name in the top ten in any category, yet clearly the best team in the conference. I know we all can't wait to see just how long this ride lasts.

Into the Suggestion Box for the KNS folks:
I suggest an automatic deletion (no questions asked) of any post that mentions football or Phil Fulmer under an article on another sport. Or vice versa. No comments about other sports or coaches on a football article either. Some of these goofs that persist in doing that might get the message then. And that would prevent a whole series of needless responses when they do it. Pretty simple to me.
Of course, some folks have a focusing problem with regard to staying on-topic and this would severely limit what some of them are capable of discussing but, hey, I think we could survive.
Posted by murrayvol on March 7, 2008 at 3:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)
steve: Beat SC and a 1 seed should be a lock but who knows? The selection committee knows but they're not talking til March 16.
Posted by Colliervol on March 8, 2008 at 10:43 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Man, that's a stretch if I ever saw one. What does "website traffic", "advertising" and "IT programs" have to do with people that can't stay on topic? All I'm asking is for folks to show more intelligence than a 3 year old, keep the discussion to the topic at hand and not inject needless comments about Phil Fulmer in a basketball article. (I don't care how much you do it on a football article. That's your opinion and your business.) Sounds pretty simple to me.
My feelings about the pay site are simple editorial comments and well known. I absolutely wish we had it back but that's probably never going to happen. So I don't worry much about it.
As far as being "cost effective", well, it appears the KNS already has a mechanism or somebody in place to do what you say they can't do. I see comments deleted and violators banned all the time so somebody is watching it, aren't they? (I believe some of the "alter egos" and "nattering nabobs" already found that out the hard way.) If they've done it before for other reasons, they can most certainly delete off-topic comments.

Lofton will be remebered as the "Peyton Manning" of the basketball program. He cares so much about this team. He puts his team before himself and personnel recognition. Staying late after practice to help Jordan rather than shooting himself says everything about Lofton. (see other article) Not only is he a great player, but he is a great leader. It is time to pick a street on campus to be renamed Lofton Drive.

ITS GREAT TO BE A TENNESSEE VOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
C-Loft is the man. No one works harder than he does. I watch him run around the entire offensive position. Then get back and follow his man around the whole time hes on offense. You will be remembered by me as the best 3 point shooter i have ever seen in my life. Countless bombs from any where on the court it seemed like at times. Most of those times you had someone in your face. Complete player, very unselfish, gets the most out of your talents.
J-Smith is Awesome too. Super athletic, unlimited range, unselfish. So many more too. I will truly miss watching you in a Vols uniform. Howell amazes me every time i watch him play. Super smooth, and and very good defender. plays hard as does every one who puts on the Orange and White.
SEC Champs Babeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Nope Fritter. Maybe a Fascist though. (I have been called that by my kids once or twice.) I like people that say they have the authority to use it. If the KNS can't control the off-topic comments, why post it in the rules?
Bottom line- I didn't comment on what Iowavol said nor do I care. (Again, Foolmore, you just can't seem to stay with the topic at hand, can you?) I respond to the original comments and then you divert to Iowavol for some reason. There are some focusing drugs (Ritalin, Concerta, etc.) that a doctor can give you if you need them. When you decide to stay on point (and the only point was to not post Fulmer comments on a basketball article), we'll talk again. Until then, you are wasting my time.
