GAINESVILLE - Tennessee men's basketball coach Bruce Pearl stressed from the opening tip this season how he wanted the Vols to emulate Florida's past two national championship teams.
The Gators won with balance, unselfish play, execution and chemistry under coach Billy Donovan.
This season, UT ruled the SEC in the same fashion. The Vols (27-3, 13-2 SEC) clinched their first outright SEC regular-season title in 41 years with an 89-86 win at the O'Connell Center on Wednesday night. The Vols close out the regular season at home Sunday against South Carolina (TV: WVLT, 2 p.m.).
Donovan said he sees the similarities between his title teams and Pearl's 2007-08 product.
"Any really good team has answers at different positions,'' Donovan said. "Tennessee has those kind of answers.
"The way Tennessee plays, they have a lot of guys who don't necessarily shoot the three at all, but (Chris) Lofton and JaJuan (Smith) make as tough as threes as anyone.
"Then they have Tyler as the go-to guy, and I think (Wayne) Chism has really improved and gotten better.''
High praise coming from a coach who had just seen his team's NCAA tournament hopes likely dashed in dramatic fashion after leading by 13 at the half.
JaJuan Smith said the key to the comeback was patience.
"We tried to play four-minute games between each of the TV timeouts in the second half,'' said JaJuan Smith, who scored 16 of his 23 points over the final 20 minutes. We just said we had to win every one.''
And UT did, opening the second half on a 7-0 run to cut the Florida lead to 55-49 on a Tyler Smith turnaround in the lane with 18 minutes left.
Lofton later hit a 3-pointer to cut the Gators' lead to 69-68 at the 8:16 mark, and JaJuan Smith followed with a lay-up at 7:45 to give the Vols their first lead of the game, 70-69.
UT's run extended to 14-0 before Florida scored with 4:49 remaining, Nick Calathes hitting two free throws to cut the Vols' lead to 79-71.
All this after the Gators hit their first nine shots of the game and led by as many as 16 in the first half.
"Florida could not have played any better the first 20 minutes,'' Pearl said. "They absolutely - just like in Knoxville - carved us up in the first half.
"We came back in the second half, extended our defense more, and they didn't get as many open shots.''
Indeed, when Dan Werner hit a 3-pointer with 4:25 left to make it 79-74, it was the Gators' first field goal in more than seven minutes. Marreese Speights' had scored the prior bucket before at the 11:37 mark. At the time, that gave Florida a 65-58 lead.
"We didn't panic, because we knew we played one of our worse halves of basketball and they were on fire in the first half,'' Lofton said. "We knew we'd fight back no matter what the score was. We knew we had some runs in us.''
Pearl said winning the SEC title was emotional, but at the same time, he was very matter-of-fact when encapsulating his team's performance.
"Relief? Not really, because this is what we set out to do,'' he said. "This team did what it was supposed to do.''

Nice props from Donovan, especially considering what the game meant to his team's tourney chances. Pearl's comment at the end is telling, "Relief? Not really, because this is what we set out to do,'' he said. "This team did what it was supposed to do." UT started the year with high expectations (SI preseason #3), I suspect the SEC regular season championship is the first of several goals Pearl challenged this team with this season. This is already an historic year for the men's program, I think the best is yet to come.
Go VOLS!!

Billy D is a damn good college coach, hard not to respect him. Next year we'll be battling them tooth and nail, I think.
As for Werner, he is a good player who needs to decide if he is going to be Bill Laimbeer Jr or a basketball player.

Billy Donovan gets my respect, but I still hate UF no matter what.
Eventually someone is gonna KO Werner for his little smirky / walk-off hard fouls.

I still liked the look Tyler gave Werner as he walked by , I knew before the game ever started there would be something happen and Werner would be right in the middle of it. It would of been nice to see Tyler knock him on his -ss just because he could but Im glad he didnt because we need him really bad.
I just hope Tn doesnt run out of steam this year in the tournament.

I'm afraid someone is going to kick Werner's butt before he figures it out, I am disappointed that Coach D tolerates that kind of play.

SEC has become a great coaches conference: Pearl, Donovan, Gillespie, Stallings, etc. Don't necessarily care for their teams but I do respect these men as coaches.
Last I heard Anthony Grant may be replacing Odom at USC. This former Donovan assistant now at VCU is the real deal, he could have a huge impact in the SEC. Heard this when Odom first announced so this may be old news or may have changed.

Grant would be a good selection. The coach at UAB also knows what he is doing. 2 good obtainable candidates for any SEC school. Though Pearl was a great hire, UAB's coach is the one I wanted at the time. Probably wouldn't be where we are now, but we would still be competing for the SEC.

afrizzle/voljunkie,
you are correct on both...Mike Anderson was the UAB coach at the time we hired Pearl. He then stayed one more year at UAB and took the job at Missouri, where he has had to kick some of Quinn Snyder's thugs off the team and has struggled a little...but he will be fine.
When Anderson left for Missouri, Mike Davis took the job after getting run out of Indiana. This was a good fit for Davis since he played his college ball at Alabama and knows the state/region well. That, and he also brought Vaden, their best player and transfer from IU.
Just thought I would clear everything up. Both are excellent coaches and Davis would be an upgrade over Gottfried at Bama....here is hoping they don't wise up!

AirForceOne, how do you think KY will do in the SEC Tourney? I kind of wonder with Crawford & Bradley having to play 35+ minutes a game (sometimes the whole game). How can they keep that up for 3 straight days in the SEC Tourney? They need to beat FL Saturday to get the #2 East Seed in the SEC Tourney. Is that right? Good luck. Except when you play the VOLS! GO BIG ORANGE! BEAT THE GAMECOCKS! It looks like we will probally be playing SC/Ole Miss or LSU in the 2nd rd of the SEC tourney. I think I would rather see LSU make the #3 West seed and Ole Miss at the #4W. When we beat SC (5-11), if GA beats (5-11) Ole Miss-will GA be the #5 or #6 Seed in the East? GO VOLS!

If KY loses to FL some how and Vandy some how beats AL- who is the #2E Seed? Oh, by the way AirForceOne, H*!! of a game last Sunday! I would of hated to see KY sweep the VOLS this year of all years! However, TN seems to find away to win the close ones (except at KY & at Vandy). W VA by 2 on Neutral Ct, at Xavier by 7, Gonzaga by 10 on Neu ct, Ole Miss by 2 at H, OH ST by 5 at H, at Al by 7, at MSU by 5, at LSU by 2, at GA by 3, at Memphis by 4, KY by 3 at H, and at FL by 3 (12 close games out of 30). I probally left a couple of games out. Just win baby! GO VOLS!

bleed_orange. A very good question. After Patterson went down, I truly thought they would get the crap beat out of em in Knoxville. I was surprized how well some of the role players have stepped up along with Bradley and Crawford elevating their games.
I think it will be difficult for Kentucky in a tournament due to the quick recovery and turnaround that will be required over the weekend. I know that they are in excellent physical condition, but it would still be a lot to ask. If a few of the bench players can step up and give Bradley, Crawford and Stevenson a breather, they can make a decent run.....still a daunting task though.
I see Kentucky making it to Saturday with a Sunday appearance being a stretch. I think it will be enough to get them in the NCAA however.

One game at a time. Beat SC, then win 1st G 2nd RD in SEC Tourney, win in the Semi's, then WIN in the Finals of the SEC Tourney, get #1 Seed in NCAA, beat 16 seed,8 or 9,probally 4 or 5 (% wise),2 or 3 (% wise) to go to the Final 4, then anything can happen. Earlier in the season TN won 11 in a row. Why cann't we win 12 in a row-NCAA CHAMPS! GO VOLS!

Let me say this, Tyler Smith has passion and talks to the other team. What was interesting when I was on the floor for the Vandy game was how controlled he was. For that matter, how controlled the whole team was. I didn't hear a lot of trash talk and it seemed like they had a "bring the lunch pail and get to work" mentality.
However, Tyler called Netler some choice words in that Vandy game on a couple of occasions (but it was after he had repeatedly grabbed and talked smack to him).
I'm sure Tyler's angry outburst wasn't at Werners first lashing out at him. Tyler has control, but when he is challenged he does his thing. Great teamwork with Duke holding Tyler back. The same thing happened in Nashville when Duke went to go after the Vandy guy after the dive on the floor after the whistle. Lots of poise. Great win Vols and great passion.
This team is special.

mparker, I will be very surprised if Felton stays at GA. A buddy of mine worked as the academic affairs counselor for the Men's basketball team up until last year. He said the program has been in disaray for a long time. Players missing class and cursing out their tutors with no recourse from the coach. Said Felton didn't care about the academics or discipline...just wanted to win games.
Word on the street is Felton was there because he knows people and is not there for his skill as a basketball coach. YOu fill in the blanks on that one.
As far as USC being and up and comer, I'm not so sure. They have a lot of work to do. Even with Spurrier, it is taking a while to undo Lou Holtz mess. I love coach Odom and he was a class act, but finishing below 500 in conference the last 6 years isn't gonna win you any banners hanging from the rafters.

Qutsider comments: (I enjoy UM, VU AND UT)
UT looks mentally tired. Low shooting percentage coupled with poor off the ball defense (still exceptional defense man up) shows me that the throws of a long and difficult schedule has worn on them upstairs. Lack of concentration leads to these two things. Vols like to rip on the Memphis schedule, but the other side of the coin is that UM are fresher come tourney time because of less struggles during the regular season. Seniors can usually adjust. It's youger players that may struggle in the tourney. Tyler's outbursts that marc_ash denoted can stem this time of year from such mental frustration. Having seen UT live twice this year I still contend that he is your key. What a wonderfully unselfish star he is. He'll drop 20 most nights next year because he can - he simply doesn't need to now.
Best thing to happen to the Vols would be to win one at most in the SEC tourney. They need the rest and playing for the title won't help their cause. They desreve and will receive a #1 seed even with an early exit. This SEC title meant a lot to UT because it hadn't been done in so long. Future Vol teams will realize that the big picture is more important, and they have the coach and the talent to get there. I think potentially there will be three TN teams in the final 8, and UT should have designs on staying longer.

Marc Felton's actions fly in the face of what your buddy is saying. He has kicked off about 8 players since he has been their (a number of starters including his two best this year). He has suspended players for multiple games. Felton inherited a mess. He has not brought in the best citizens since he has been their, however in most cases there is no way for a coach to know that when they recruit a kid. He had to go the JC way in an attempt to rebuild the program quickly and as he and most coaches find out, that usally doesn't work. Is Felton a good coach? I don't think so, but I would not say he is not a disiplinarian.

Tyler has just been clutch lately. I'm really surprised by our poise, in the face of the Laimbeers of the world. That stuff hasn't phased us this year. We appear very focused, my only question is, with the way we play, we such intensity, how much gas is in the tank come tourney time. Those games are back to back, and would love to see a deep run towards the title.

I've seen several comments on here lately that suggest (or actually state) that TN would be better off winning just one tourney game (or even losing on Friday) and going home to rest. WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU PEOPLE SMOKING???? First of all, losing Saturday only means you don't play on Sunday - 1 game, 1 day. Secondly, all indications are that TN will be sent to Birmingham for the first 2 rounds of the dance. That means a game on Friday against a team the walk-ons would give trouble to. You trying to tell us that a team that is EXPECTING to play for a national title can't regroup and refresh in 5 days????? Playing on Sunday means they'll get back Sunday evening at a decent hour, take Monday off, go light on Tuesday, decent practice pace on Wednesday, travel late Wednesday, shoot-around on Thursday, play Friday. That is PLENTY of time to get their legs back and if they need time to get their minds right - well, it won't be a long postseason anyway if that's the case. Finally, why would anybody think that an UPSET loss would do anything to make them better for the dance mentally??? IF they're in fact mentally tired, a loss would only create doubt and frustration - not exactly good things to have entering the NCAA's. Bottom line, there is ABSOLUTELY NO BENEFIT to losing ANY game this time of year. Period. None. Nada. And there is no sensible argument or rationale that can support anything to the contrary.

DID ANY ONE SEE THE BLOCK CALLED FOUL IN LAST NIGHTS GAME BETWEEN UCLA & STAN TALK ABOUT REFS HELPING A TEAM TO WIN"
Indeed, the UCLA game was one of the worst officiated games I have ever watched. What's worse is that UCLA knows they got a gift:
From SI.com - "A grinning Collison, looking as giddy as a child that had just gotten away with something, was more than happy to comment on the play.
"That was block," said Collison. "That was a complete block. We were fortunate to get a foul called. I heard it was a make-up [call]."
Kevin Love, who had an equally large grin on his face, said, "We'll take it," before he shushed Collison."
I firmly believe that the game of basketball has gotten too fast and frenetic for most officials. If you can't get good officiating in the PAC-10, where can you get it?

Brownsville, Was that the game in 1993 when Houston got away with a lane violation? :-) I was at that game in TBA in the dead last row against the wall. I got so mad I spiked my Coke cup and it shattered---ah the good old days.
Thats okay though, because if memory serves me correctly, we came back and totally annihilated tennessee in the SEC tourney 101-40. We had 7 players in double figures while holding Houston to 3 points.
You know the fun thing though? I am excited about the games to come for our two teams. After splitting with you guys this year, I think we are gonna have some barn burners in the seasons to come. These coaches remind me alot of Mears and Rupp. I would give anything if we could just play a game in Stokley and Memorial.

Should be an interesting tourney this year. I think either FL or KY will get knocked off early...one of them will face UT early on.
I'm rooting on FL this weekend sorry. I think FL is already out of the field of 65 and I think with a FL win in Rupp, KY will miss the dance too.

marc...Well I have to agree that a tournament will be very difficult for Kentucky. I just don't think they will have the horses to play so many games back to back. It was difficult enough when we had Patterson available, but now the offense will have to go through two guards. If we face a good man to man defense, our weekend will be a quick one.
As far as the NCAA goes....I'm just not sure yet. We don't have enough quality road wins. I think it will be important for the Cats to win Sunday against Florida and at least get one good win in the SEC tourney. If we lose to Florida, then they will have to make it to Sunday in the SEC tourney.
Overall though, I am very pleaseed with the direction Gillispie has the program headed. I'm really looking forward to the next two-three years when he will have his own players and system in place.

He's still a punk! ;)

Werner might not be the best guy to you UT fans...but what player on the Vols team would you rather your daughter date (other than Howell, who can't sing, lol)?

TJ, watch the hugging, it could lead to you doing a 2'4" leap with a finger change.
Beat SC.

AFO,
I think the one thing UK has going for them is their string of recent games. This team is nowhere near what they were when they lost at home to San Diego. Even without Paterson, they are a solid team and I think (IF) the committee looks at recent history, the Cats have a chance...and we all know how much the committee is a "what have you done for me lately" type of group.
That being said, I don't see UK losing at home. They are and have been very good this year at home and I don't see them losing to a limping FL team that has lost 8 of their last 10.
The SECC should be up for grabs. I think UT could have beaten the gators last year, had they not choked to LSU. You never know in this league.

gator4life, I'm just glad I have a son instead of a daughter.

Play who's in front of you. Beat who's in front of you. Get ready for the next in front of you.

marc, Great response, lol
I was just reading the Richt article. Do you guys ever miss a chance to fight about poor ole Fulmer? Just wondering....

Its one thing to be passionate about our football...but the Fulmer haters should take a break because there isn't gonna be a change at this time. Now after next season, all bets are off....

Back to BBall for a thought from our perspective. We played Mich State a few years ago in Tampa in the second round of the tourney and they physically beat us up for 40 minutes and sent us packing.
After that season, Donovan changed his recruiting tactics and style a little (with pretty good results). Guys like Dan Werner are required for the physical play you sometimes run up against in the Big Dance. Werner came to UF as a 3 point shooter and outside guy and has found his most playing time by being "that dirty work player".
Like him or not Vols, he aint going anywhere for a couple more years...

VolFan32,
Lighten up dude, Unless you are gonna tell me all the childish "gaytor" comments offend you too.

gator4life - Serious question. How do you think Pearl has beaten Donovan 5 out of 6 games over the last 3 years?
Posted by General_Watermelon on March 7, 2008 at 5:49 p.m. (Suggest removal)
I'm with you DSaVol. I can't even stand the NFL when they throw games and pull the starters before the playoffs. I HATE TO LOSE! EVER!

Thats a good question G_F,
I think part of it might have to do with what I posted earlier. Its hard to have a BBall team that excels in both the up-tempo and a half court game. In going to a little more physical style our teams aren't as good as they once were in the fast paced/pressure defense games. That being said, I wouldn't swap those 2 NCs for 10 straight wins against the Vols.

G_F,
I used to wonder whether it was better to lose early in the SEC tourney and then get ready for the NCAAs. After the last couple of years I don't think losing in the SEC tourney helps you in any way. The only thing losing does is give some more tape of the way you can be beat. The kids are not gonna be tired on Thursday or Friday of the next week even if they play an overtime game in the SEC championship game. And if your rafters are like ours, there is always room for another championship banner. Go Gators!!

When I was growing up along the creeks to the Cumberland, we used dogs to run the raccoons. Not people.
Worked pretty good while we sat by the fire and listened. Never had an injury other than a occasional hang-a-round the next morning.

Brownsvillevol, I think KY hates losing to us so badly because we have beaten them 65 times in basketball. I know KY has won 140 + against TN, but no one else has come close to 65. I think the 23 years in football tinkles on their cornflakes too.!!!! SEC Champs in "UK's Sport"!!! Wooo hooo!

Lofton will be remebered as the "Peyton Manning" of the basketball program. He cares so much about this team. He puts his team before himself and personnel recognition. Staying late after practice to help Jordan rather than shooting himself says everything about Lofton. (see other article) Not only is he a great player, but he is a great leader. It is time to pick a street on campus to be renamed Lofton Drive.

Hey look guys, it's Mister laugh's (gatornation). He's back. I'm still wondering if he has anything creative for once. I highly doubt it. Oh, by the way you should take your crystal ball back to Big Lots. Good luck in the NIT.

bricker865 - just send him a postcard from the Big Dance. It would be the kind thing to do.
