For the fourth time this season, the No. 17 Tennessee women's tennis team posted a come-from-behind victory, outlasting 29th-ranked South Carolina (7-4, 1-3 SEC) , 4-3, at UT Varsity Courts.
Freshman Jennifer Meredith sealed the victory for the Lady Vols (9-2, 3-1), earning her team-best third match-clinching win of the season. Meredith dropped the first set to Megon McGavock, 2-6, and fell behind, 2-5, in the second. She won the final five points of the set and took the third set, 6-1.
"This was a really good win for our team," UT co-head coach Mike Patrick said. "South Carolina is very good. The top of their lineup is among the best in the conference, but we were able to get wins in the matches that we were supposed to."
All three doubles teams won for UT, getting wins from the teams of Caitlin Whoriskey/Zsofia Zubor at No. 1, Ghizela Schutte/Rosalia Alda at No. 2 and Connor Vogel/Meredith at No. 3.
Singles winners for UT were Samantha Orlin at No. 4, Meredith at No. 5 and Vogel at No. 6.
Tennessee will play No. 10 Duke on Friday and Hawaii on Sunday in Honolulu.
Men's Tennis: The 14th-ranked Vols made quick work of 68th-ranked South Carolina, defeating the Gamecocks, 6-1, in Columbia, S.C. The Vols (12-1, 2-1 SEC) won the doubles point for the 12th time in 13 matches.
Sophomore Matt Brewer clinched the match for UT with a 6-4, 6-3 win over David Wolff at the No. 6 position. The win was Brewer's (4-2) first in SEC play.
The Vols return to action on Saturday when they play their final two non-conference matches, playing host to 24th-ranked Virginia Tech at 11 a.m. and UT Chattanooga at 4 p.m.
Women's Golf: The 12th-ranked Lady Vols shot a 5-over-par 293 and are 12th after one round of the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla.
Seven of the top 10-ranked teams in the country are competing. Fourth-ranked Southern California after a 7-under 281. No. 1 Duke is second at 282.
Senior Marci Turner is ninth individually after shooting a 2-under 70. Turner had four consecutive birdies, but bogied Nos. 17 and 18.
"We had another good round going today until a couple of finishing holes really cost us," head coach Judi Pavon said.
