Parker on Lombardi watch list

Tennessee’s Anthony Parker, a second-team All-America last year and a big reason the Vols led the SEC and nation with only four sacks allowed, has been included on the 2008 preliminary watch list for the Rotary Lombardi Award.

Parked started all 14 games at left guard en route to second-team All-America honors by the Associated Press. Tennessee’s offensive front, anchored by Parker, allowed a quarterback sack every 134.5 pass plays last year while helping produce a 3,000-yard passer, a 1,000-yard rusher and a 1,000-yard receiver.

The SEC boasts the most players on this year’s watch list with eight, followed by the Big Ten, Big 12 and Mid-American with six.

Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen and those defensive players who line up within five yards of the football. The candidates earned a place on the preliminary watch list by earning All-American honors or by being named to their respective all-conference first team as selected by the conference’s head coaches.

The preliminary watch list:

Sorry for the mispell...it's "you're in good company". Hey, it's taco night and we've been into the Coronas/lime already.

That is great news. This will help with recruiting. I really want to hear more about the line coach Greg Adkins, who may have seen the talent and recruited him. Adkins is like the invisible man in all of this. Maybe he should have been promoted to Offensive Coordinator.

philfan...Are you kidding me? There are only 110 Div. 1 teams and there are over 50 players on this list. And this is supposed to help with hrecruiting. This is a non story if you ask me. Especially when you include players from Fla. Atlantic, Northern Ill, and Bowling Green to name a few.

PLEASEGETRIDOF...this story is in keeping with the Sports Editors knowledge of how to run a sports page....just about as good as you and he thinks Fulmer can run a football program.

pleasegetridof the ignorance...

There are actually 127 FBS schools now plus 4 more that are reclassifying.

This is the preliminary list and there's little doubt Parker will make the final list.

If you just deal with starters at 127 schools at TE, OL, DL, and LB... that's almost 1800 players. Being mentioned in the top 3% of players at those positions is a pretty good honor.

How many seriously competitive things have you ever been in the top 3% of?

he was the top 3% of the underwater basket weaving team. He was also in the top 3% of the chess team (only three players but he was in the top three percent) not to mention his IQ rated in the top three percent in his 1st grade class.... he may have been 13 at the time but it's still three percent bigolly.

sjt18,
thanks for clarifying with me that I left out the powerhouse newcomers to Div.1 such as Western KY and Florida Atlantic. And I guess being in the top 3% is pretty good considering his program has not been there the past 7 years with one of the nations highest paid coaches, athletic budgets, and facilities.

And Boasoldier, I was an all-state hs athlete in the early 90's and an honorable mention all-american in a college sport. Please remind me of you credentials?
