Tennessee sprinter Rubin Williams was named South Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for the second consecutive year on Monday.
Williams, a senior, won his third consecutive conference 200-meter title at this year's SEC Indoor Championships after sweeping both the indoor and outdoor SEC championships in the event last season. His indoor personal-best time of 20.55 seconds, recorded in the preliminaries at the SEC meet, stands as the fastest time in the NCAA and second-fastest time in the world this season.
The 12-time All-America also finished fourth in the 60 at the SEC championships in 6.68. His personal-best time of 6.64 broke the Penn State National meet record earlier this season.
Williams is scheduled to compete in the 60 and 200 at this weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., for the No. 2-ranked Vols.
Former Vol Aries Merritt was named the 2006 South Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year before Williams earned back-to-back honors.
Auburn's Jake Dunkleberger was South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the Year. Florida State coach Bob Braman earned South Region Indoor Coach of the Year and Nat Page of Georgia Tech was named South Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
Women's Golf: Senior Marci Turner shot a par-72 and is tied for 11th after two rounds of the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla.
Turner is 2-under for the tournament, which concludes today.
Team-wise, the Lady Vols shot a 10-over 298 today to remain in 12 place, tied with Central Florida at 15-over 591.
"Marci had another solid round out there today, which was really good for her," UT coach Judi Pavon said. "She didn't hit the ball as well, but her short game saved her.
"As a team, we are really struggling with self-confidence," Pavon said. "It is going to be tough to turn things around."
Duke leads at 12-under, eight shots ahead of Purdue. Blue Devils Alison Whitaker (8-under 136) and Amanda Blumenherst (138) are 1-2 individually.
