With a secondary that returns six players who have started games, Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer said he would consider playing rising sophomore safety Eric Berry on offense.
However any such experiment would have to wait until after the Vols have installed first-year offensive coordinator Dave Clawson’s new offense.
“I would say that we would get to some of that eventually,” Fulmer said Tuesday. “That’s not a priority right now. It was a recruiting promise, but more importantly I think he could impact our team in some ways.”
Wide receiver Gerald Jones played that role at times last season, rushing eight times for 58 yards primarily when he lined up at quarterback.
Berry, who played quarterback in high school, recorded 222 yards on interception returns, a total that ranks second all-time in the SEC.
That kind of production is easy to notice.
“Gerald Jones did a pretty nice job,” Fulmer said. “Maybe you do something with both of them. We’ve talked very little about that. Coach (John) Chavis is fine with it. Coach Clawson’s fine with it.
“But you get a guy who has that kind of return yardage every time he’s touched the football, we obviously want to get him the ball if we can.”
For what it’s worth, Berry wouldn’t mind taking a few snaps on offense.
“I would say if it happens it happens, if it doesn’t it doesn’t. I just want to focus on defense, but if he does pull me over on offense, that would be nice,” Berry said. “But the way things are looking with Gerald Jones, if it’s not broke don’t fix it.”
Forgoing Green: Fulmer said at least one of UT’s three full scrimmages this spring will be full-contact for quarterbacks Jonathan Crompton, B.J. Coleman and Nick Stephens.
“All three of them have yet to completely prove themselves in this league, so we will definitely take the opportunity to have them play some live,” Fulmer said.
Going without the green, non-contact jersey is just fine with Crompton.
“I do like that just because it gives you more feel for the game because things are happening fast, you have to make decisions quicker,” Crompton said. “You know you can get hit. You’re not sitting back there saying, ‘Oh, they can’t hit me, I’m going to take an extra half second.’ I think that helps especially going into games.”
And it also leaves a little less to the locker room imagination.
“That tends to get annoying,” Crompton joked. “Our defense is like, ‘Yeah, yeah, I got you.’ But you didn’t tackle me. We joke around about that all the time.”
Breaking Down ’Backers: Tennessee’s most compelling position battle on defense will likely be between Adam Myers-White and Nevin McKenzie at strongside linebacker.
Weakside linebacker Rico McCoy, UT’s lone returning starter at linebacker, sees that battle as essentially a toss-up.
“Adam Myers-White and Nevin McKenzie, it’s a toss up. I think they’re both going to be playmakers,” he said. “They’re both big, fast guys and they can fly around. I’m looking forward to playing with those guys.”
Rising senior Ellix Wilson is listed as the starter at middle linebacker.
Injury Report: Six players will not participate in spring drills because of injury.
Tailback Josh Hawkins (foot), defensive back Marsalous Johnson (knee), center Josh McNeil (knee), linebacker Shane Reveiz (heart), wide receiver Lucas Taylor (shoulder) and defensive back Brent Vinson (shoulder) will not participate in contact work. Additionally, defensive end Chris Walker will be limited early.
With McNeil out, guard Anthony Parker will spend spring practice working at center.
Returning Rogan: Former Fulton High School standout Dennis Rogan should have no trouble hanging onto his role as punt returner.
“When he went in, he changed our punt return team last year,” Fulmer said.
Last season as a true freshman, Rogan averaged 9.7 yards per return on punts.
Fulmer said Lucas Taylor and Austin Rogers, both of whom have returned punts, could be options.
Fulmer said he’d also like to give Berry a look at returning punts as well as Vinson.
Rogan also averaged 29.5 yards per kickoff return, including the Vols’ season long of 78 yards.
Holding: Bram Cannon and Farragut graduate Geoff Courtney will compete for the job as holder of extra points and field goals vacated by Casey Woods.

GerryOP ,Agreed.
I can see Berry playing some on offense, but I would be a little cautious on kick returns unless it was a do or die situation.

Berry can play almost anywhere. He is an ATHLETE!

If they are smart they will get Berry and Jones on the field as much as possible, Defense, Offense, Special Teams. Let your playmakers make plays, something Cutcliffe had a hard time buying in to.

I just want Fulmer to give Clawson a chance to do his job without him trying to micromanage it. Let's see what he can do.

I can see this right now if Eric Berry goes on offense for a few plays here and there. Each time he goes in, it'll be obvious that we're trying to go to him.
I'v seen this before. Remember Eric Locke?

I'm sure that Clawson would recognize Berry as a playmaker and find ways to get him the ball as needed.

I'm sold on the "getting the ball to a playmaker" thing, but I sure hope our defense doesn't suffer for it.

BigVolinCarolina,
I see your point but then you have a decoy to open it up for someone else. As long as they will use him for a decoy at times. I am also reminded of Kelley "The Future" Washington against LSU in the regular season his freshman year. Everyone including my grandmother and Nostradamus knew he was getting the ball. It didn't matter. Kelley scolded LSU like small children and had his way because he was a fantastic athlete.
The problem with G-gun is that Gerald ran the ball... period. If that cat drops back and starts tossin the cheese to one of our mouseketeers streaking down the field or pitches it to one of our RB's... then THAT can open things up.
Get the ball to Berry. He's a football player. Chances are he'll be alright.
Posted by rsarazen on March 11, 2008 at 10:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Here's a thought; use Berry as a decoy and throw or run to someone else. Do that when you bring him in on offense the first couple of times to sucker the opponent and then go to him when least expected. I'm the least qualified to be a coach but why do these ideas come from people like me and others who respond passionatley about UT football and not from actual coaches who study the game? There is a syndrome called overlooking the obvious and doing the usual. This is why Spurrier for years always commented after beating us; "same ole Tennessee". I believe that Clawson will get the opportunity to embed creativity to our snoring offense. I'm excited about this year. GO VOLS !

Berry is a superstar and can and will do whatever he's asked to do and make a difference for the team. If this was the Big 10 (11 teams - but who's counting and who would question such a brain trust as to the accuracy of their count?) he would already be being touted as a Heistman candidate. Add offense and kick returns and the press would be all over it. A shame the SEC doesn't get the same Heistman look. Yes...Florida has cranked out a couple of quarterbacks and there have been a couple of running backs from around the league...but imagine a big mouthed defensive back from the Big Ten beating out the most prolific college quarterback (you know..that guy who won the Super Bowl that nafslov loves to degrade) of all time who's numbers eclipsed the Heistman quarterback winner just the year before (Danny Wuerffel - Florida). Yup. Just imagine. Help remove the "t" from Heistman by honoring a player from THE University with the "T", Berry for Heisman!

Guys I think we are not pointing out the most obvious player who could dominate even though we knew what he was going to do and when he was going to do it. Tim "Teabag" Tebow. 99% of the time he came in for Leak two years ago, he ran the ball off tackle and yet he still was successful. I think with the right package, any athlete can be effective on any play. That's why I'm so excited about Clawson as he has said from the get go that his goal is to get the ball to athletes in space. Just my 2 cents.

I'm on the fence on this one. One side I can see just putting the athletes in positions to make plays O or D.
Other side, I sure would like to have a "face" on defense. We have not have that fear factor since Al Wilson. Having Berry known as the "come my way boy and I'll take your damn head off" face would be a great thing to restore at Old UT.

Thanks Bro'! I am really anxious to see Berry again. He has impressed me more than anyone in a long, long time. There are many things about the 2008 Volunteer football team that are reason for optimism. I really think the offense will be formidable. I am worried about the overall defense and the defensive scheme in general...but for now...the stories are about the positives...and Lord knows...I need some positive stuff! Keep the Faith!

PearlOwnsFulmer The reason Fulmer isnt on a bunch of talk shows is because he isnt a show off type of a person who always has to be heard from, like some in here. Also with a east division title this year, I'd say a lot of SEC coaches would have loved to have been as non-relevant as coach Fulmer. And also I like orange kool-aid, you must be drinking another colored kool-aid laced with some drug. Are you a Bama fan? You kind of act like one! just curious?

bigorangedude - so was Fulmer a big show off in the 90's? He was on a lot of ESPN shows back then.
Here are the coaches that appeared more than Fulmer on national media shows last season.
Urban Meyer
Mark Richt
Steve Spurrier
Bobby Johnson
Rich Brooks
Nick Saban
Tommy Tuberville
Sylvester Croom
Les Miles
Houston Nutt
I do not recall good ole' Ed Orgeron appearing on any national shows.
So, I guess him and Fulmer are the only coaches in SEC football that are not show off personalities?
Thanks

People, it will take a miracle to make our "D" 30% better, which I believe is necessary to win 9 games. I don't think it will happen, hope I'm wrong. Thus my predict 7-5.
Remember, look at the total yds for UAB. If they have over 320, sweep out the bunker.

We need Berry delivering blows, not taking them...he's too valuable.

If Fulmer has promised Berry some offensive play, as the article indicates, then he should be allowed to play both offense and defense. A big recruiting tool is being able to show prospects what we have promised and prove that we have followed through. Credibility is everything.

Philfan you are on the money. I'd say Fulmer and Chavis want Berry on offense like they want a hole in their heads. But when Berry speaks you listen.
All we need is Berry and G-gun on the same side of the set. You throw the screen to Jones and watch Berry rip a defenders head off with a vicious block. Next time you fake the screen and send Berry deep.
Or lets one up that with Berry at Qb and Jones at running back for ~5 spread option plays a game. My friends you are talking about unstoppable. You know either one of them can throw the ball, plus the safeties for the other team won't know up from down with those two out there.
I like the idea and I feel like our defense is definately gonna be better this year than last. Which means less plays per game for each defender and more energy for Berry and possibly Vinson to return to the offensive side of the ball on occasion.
You have to love it, you know why?
The other teams defense would be terrified...
