It was a typical Bruce Pearl reaction.
After finding out he was sharing SEC Coach of the Year honors with Kentucky’s Billy Gillispie, Tennessee’s third-year coach turned it into a joke.
“I have to check with (UT athletic director) Mike Hamilton if it’s in my contract that if I’m co-coach of the year I have to give back half the bonus,” he said Tuesday. “I’ve got to read the fine line on that.”
League coaches voted on the annual awards and also named UT senior Chris Lofton and sophomore Tyler Smith to the first team. Senior JaJuan Smith was a second-team selection and earned recognition as a member of the All-Defensive team.
Sophomore guard J.P. Prince also earned the Sixth Man Award for best reserve player in the league.
“I was glad both Tyler and Chris made the first team and that JaJuan was finally recognized on a team,” Pearl said.
Vanderbilt senior Shan Foster was named the SEC Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring at 20.6 points per game.
“I voted for Foster as player of the year,” Pearl said. “I felt like he was the best player.”
As for Pearl, all he did was lead the Vols (28-3, 14-2 SEC) to their first No. 1 ranking in school history and a first outright SEC regular-season title since 1967. After a roller-coaster first season, Gillispie guided the Wildcats (18-11, 12-4) to second in the East.
No. 4-ranked Tennessee begins SEC tournament play in Atlanta at 1 p.m. Friday (TV: WVLT) against the winner of Thursday’s game between South Carolina and LSU.
Lofton, a preseason All-American, broke out of an early season shooting slump to lead the Vols with 16 points per game.
Tyler Smith proved his versatility after transferring from Iowa, averaging 13.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
Despite the first-team honor, Smith seemed more pleased with JaJuan Smith’s recognition than his own.
“You talk about somebody happy, he’s happy,” Tyler Smith said. “It’s great for him.
“Coach always told us the more we win the better the accolades as far as individuals will be. Individual awards mean something, but just being here to play is great for me.”
Prince, a transfer from Arizona, came on strong after he earned his eligibility in mid-season. The former Memphis White Station star averages 8.5 points and 3.5 rebounds off the bench.
“It’s been my goal since I got back playing to be the best sixth man possible, nationally or in SEC,” he said. “Whatever the coach needs off the bench that night, I try to give it to him. That’s my job.”
More Honors: Pearl, Lofton and Tyler Smith also were honored by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. Pearl was named the District IV Coach of the Year while Lofton and Smith were named to the All-District IV (Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida) team.
Chris Douglas-Roberts of Memphis was named District IV Player of the Year.

What a sham! Kentucky did not beat one SEC team on the road that had a winning record and this guy gets Co-Coach of the Year. What a joke!

Kentucky beat the Gators for the first time in three years while Bruce Pearl is 5 and 1 against the 2 time National Champs...Sham doesn't begin to describe it. Can you say jealous? The other SEC coaches are obviously very jealous of Tn's success. Screw 'em. We love our Bruce all mighty!!

Congrats to Gillispie for doing the least with the most talent. If I were voting, I'd vote for the coach that was good all season long, not just half of it. What a farce.

Way to go, Ja'Juan Smith!!! It's about time!!! CBP is hands down coach of the year. Is any other coach in the SEC getting the positive recognition CBP is bringing to UT?! Billy who?

You would hope that voters could put their personal jealousies and prejudices aside. Obviously, they haven't matured enough yet to do that.

I really could care less about individual goals. Sure, it's nice for the ego, but TEAMS win championships. How many greats have went down without a ring, trophy, etc?
Anyway, regarding Billy G. I have nothing against the man, but I remember when he was asked what got his team started on the winning spree, his response: "I just let them go out there and play their game, without trying to interfere too much." Now, let me get this straight: You interfered and lost, then you left them alone to play and they won. Where in that picture do you seem him winning co-coach of the year. Seems to me that it was his interference that caused the skid in the first place. Oh well, just my thoughts. I am at least happy for Coach Pearl that he received some recognition.
Let's bring home the TEAM trophies and let the others have their individual toys. GO VOLS!!!

Congrats to coach Pearl, Tyler, Chris and Jajuan, a well deserved honor. Hard to believe that league coaches think Gillespie deserved anything. Does the first half of the season not count? As for JP, if he's the best 6th man in this league, than the league is devoid of talented bench players. Congrats to him as well.

stevefrommemphis (12p) ... nice. As I've said before, winning has a way of taking care of everything.
SEC regular season and tourney champions should guarantee a #1 seed if not THE #1 seed (IMHO).
CBP's comment regarding his bonus sounded tongue-in-cheek but that is why individual coaching honors are important as there are usually financial incentives involved. Of course team accomplishments figure into that as well.
CBP ... head coach of the best team and that's not "garbage" (no apologies to Mr. Stallings)!

TALK ABOUT A CRIME!!! GILLISPIE SHOULD HAVE WON COACH OF THE YEAR ALL TO HIMSELF!!
With the talent pearl had in a down year for the rest of the SEC...he simply did what he should have done. Kentucky on the other hand had to deal with injuries to key players. Gillispie had to completely re-coach a roster that had been coached down by Flubby.
Oh by the way....Gillispie indicated that he voted for Pearl for COY. Had he voted for someone else, then most likely Gillispie would be Coach of The Year by HIMSELF. Pearl is lucky to be named to share the honor.
We don't have an attitude....We are just the good.

I still can't believe Foster gets player of the year over Remel Bradley.
I'll also tell you why Gillespie doesn't deserve COY: he came into a program with a high talent level. He obviously flubbed the relationship with his players, and got off to a bad start. He was then able to parlay that old 'Rupp Magic" known as plus 8 FT's per game (minimum) into some tight home wins over teams like UT and Ark.
Billy G is a good coach, but there are others who did more with less (maybe check out CBP's job this year).

That's right, Pearl is "not quite" coach of the year....and Peyton was "not quite" the Hiesman winner, and Parker is only second best in the SEC, and so on........right. This is the kind of nonsense that has been going on and on and on. Well, we still have the SEC tournament and Big Dance to go thru.....Let's see how BP does and lets see how Gillispie, the other coach of the year, does.
Posted by mparker on March 12, 2008 at 9:21 a.m. (Suggest removal)
Very nice for Jajuan; here's hoping he has a great showing in the SEC tourney. He is capable of being THE guy in these back-to-back-to-back games.
I'm taking a guess taht CBP will 'grind-it-out' for at least the first game, if not the first and second. He may not turn the men loose completely until (if) they make the finals.
CBP is getting smarter, he is learning to 'pace' the team, I think; at least, to me it seems like that is what he is doing. Less of the press, more half-court sets, change of pace....
It has been a fun season.

I agree! What a joke and a rip off. Nobody expected the Vols to be were they are. Gillespie does not deserve to be the co-winner. Tennessee has often never gotten a fair shake. Thats ok though we will see what they say when the Vols are playing in the final four. Go VOLS!

Im a huge Vol fan and I think both coaches were very deserving. This is award usually doesnt go to the best team which finished exactly where they were predicted.Coach Gillespie did an amazing job turning around Kentucky due to the transition and the injuries they have overcome.Congratulations CBP!!!

Air Force,
There are many on here who have Orange blinders on.....but you sir have Blue blinders on!
The coach of the year award is for this SEASON only, and Pearl clearly should have won it.
Gillespie did have some injuries, but he also had talent....as in multiple parade/mcdonalds All Americans.
As for the coaching in Knoxville, I know that Gillespie put the stall in the offense, but he could not have foreseen hitting ,multiple deep and contested 3s with 1 and 2 seconds on the shot clock. If normal percentages hold with those 4 or 5 shots alone....Tennessee wins by 10-15.
I am not taking ANYTHING away from Kentucky, they played outstanding that day and they made those shots so you cannot say 'what if' but I can say that those "heaves" that went in cannot be attributed to his coaching.
Pearl led his team to a 28-3 (14-2) record against a much tougher schedule than did Gillespie 18-11 (12-4)...so the coach of the year should have been Pearl.
I do think that Gillespie is a fine coach and will serve UK well. I expect some more great battles through the upcoming years...
Posted by FatherVol on March 12, 2008 at 9:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)
I agree 100%, Beastly72. Gillespie's coaching turned a miserable start into a probable bid to the Dance, and what he did after losing his top scorer for the sesaon was phenomenal. I dare say, without injuries, KY would have broken our win streak at home. Congrats to both fine coaches.
Posted by CatScratchFever on March 12, 2008 at 10:10 a.m. (Suggest removal)
rbhobbs. I think Gillispie put it the best...."When a team wins the championship, that's who I always vote for: the coach who wins the division or the overall. No matter if you're supposed to or not, it's a great accomplishement once you do". Gillispie stated that he voted for Pearl.
It's fun for all of us to get on here and throw some banter back and forth...I never take offense to anything thrown my way and hope no one ever takes my "jabs" personally. We are both fortunate to have very good coaches leading our programs. I am really looking forward to the seasons to come...it should be a lot of fun. Congrats to both coaches and all the players.

I can sense the fear and doubt in your posts. Keep telling yourself how good you are, but if your honest with yourself, I know your worried. Pearl is class, he is infectious, he has the attention of the basketball world, he leads with confidence, his team believes in him and leaves it all on the court every night. We win with effort and grit and hustle.
Gillopie is a little weasel who is one more brief losing streak away from being ousted by you panicky, self-righteous blue misters. It's a shame how Tubby was let go. I agree with an earlier statement that KY is the Nebraska of college basketball. Stew in your juice.

volball....fear?? doubt?? Are you and Duke Crews smoking lettuce together?
IMO. Pearl is a decent coach...not a great coach. I think in both games this year, Gillispie outcoached pearl. That opinion is shared by most outside of Kentucky and tennessee as well.
I think that the relationship between pearl and the fans is still so new that the fans are blinded by his marketing shenanigans. In a down year for the rest of the SEC, he darn well should win out. He has had success this year...the question is will he sustain it? We will see.
Pearl has had three years now correct? I bet that Gillispie will do more at Kentucky in three years than pearl. He will also hang Kentucky's EIGHTH National Championship banner before tennessee even gets close to seeing one. Our tradition will trump you everytime. Now and forever.

af1, time will tell. I put my money on Pearl far exceeding any future ky accomplishments, tradition doesn't win ball games. Get used to second or third place in the SEC. This year is a sign of things to come.
I'm certainly not sold on Gellopie and his "system". He has mcdonald's all americans holding the ball at the top of the key until the shot clock reaches 5, then lucks in desperation threes. That will catch up with them very soon, and what star recruit will want to play in that system? I see rough seas ahead for KY. Gillopie is a joke.
It tickles me to death to be at the top of SEC basketball. It has admittedly been a long time coming. Pearl has rearranged the pecking order in the SEC.

Pearl "The Pervert" will either be arrested for sexual assault on some poor female or be gone to another job before the vols win another SEC. This year was as good as it will get for the vols and it took a down year for the rest of the SEC to do it.

airforceone:
you are relying on parlor tricks with the 'down year' thing. An RPI of 1 is no joke, nor is the max stength of schedule. Even our SEC losses, both on the road, where close. Can Gillespie say that??? Don't think so.
Ramel Bradley is an excellent, excellent player. Joe Crawford is up there, too. The other players for UK, on average, are better than most teams can floor in the SEC. In my view, UK UNDER-achieved this year. That didn't happen in Bruce's first year, did it?? The Vols earned a 2 seed that year (and of course wasted it).
The 'proof' for Pearl will also be in the next few years as the program totally becomes 'his'.
as for Erin Andrews....she certainly advertises her wares, eh?? She's got about 5-6 more good years in her (maybe). Bruce would be better off (and money ahead) pulling off a 'spitzer'.
You are dead right on one thing: how will UT fans react when the inevitable slump comes??? Really, fans all over are jerks now. I went to the Gonzaga site back in the fall to congrat them on their team, and posters where on their crabbing and moaning about Mark Few, all the same kind of stuff you read here....It will happen to Burce too, one of these days.

OK, I'm not a statitician or don't know exactly UT's record from Bruce's first year, but it was something like a 20+ win season, tie for first in the SEC East division, coming off a prior year with no NCAA tournament bid and ranked at the lower end of the SEC East. He didn't get Coach of the Year, Brady from LSU did, right? This year Gillespie took a team that was expected to finish 2nd in the east, and finished 2nd in the east with a 18-12 record, and got co-COY award. It seems that UT (which I'll admit, I am biased) never gets the acknowledgement they deserve. Anyways, individual awards don't matter too much, so lets get a couple team awards (SEC and National CHAMPIONS trophies).

From Gillespe's performance, I'd say all you have to do to be SEC coach of the year is lose all of your games in the first half of the season and then start coaching for real. So take a leaf, Bruce: Next year, don't even start coming to practice until January.

Isn't it a real contradiction that those who boast that billy b/e is the best coach when they also say that he has the best talent. I suppose his skill lies in letting the players do their thing without any coaching input as he said.
Yet CBP gets more from supposedly lesser skilled players than BBE gets from AA players.
How does that wash out as better coaching?
Has more appearance as the result of professional
jealousy and personal bias to me.

Now because you were allowed to share an SEC coach of the year with a coach that produced a championship in the SEC(btw bruce is .500 against you and your all americans), you think now that Kentucky will win another national championship? You guys haven't been a legitimate contender for a NC in years.
Apparently winning against a weak SEC, as you stated, allowed kentucky to win some games that you can't win out of conference (as our out of conference SOS is #1). Nice try blaming our success on SEC being weak, because we have the best out of conference schedule and standings...there's always next year though, right?

also, when was the last time kentucky was happy with 18-12? Sad times for that program

There is really nothing to compare the two coaches, Pearl is head and shoulders above Gillispie, I guess just having your name associated with Ky is enough to side in for a tie.

AirForceOne go smoke some more of your ky bluegrass. When was the last time UK won an SEC Championship? Why was it you got rid of the best non racist coach in the history of your school other than Pitino? Catch any Cards or Gophers games lately? Cant stand the pain of seeing other teams that would stomp your Cats team, coached by men you could not keep or got rid of. I dont really blame you, but if you did at least you saw some good basketball this year. I myself seen one great game this year, and i think the cats lost by 40-50, cant remember i was to busy rolling in the floor to keep up with the final.
UT OWNS THE CATS IN ALL SPORTS!!!!
THEY HATE US CAUSE THEY AINT US!!!!!!
GO VOLS

Kentucky is the Nebraska of basketball. Bill Gillespie is its Bill Callahan. The beam of hope is far behind you now as you plunge into the abyss that is known as mediocrity. Have fun not winning any championships any time soon. Remember the alamo, nuge.

mparker, Voljunkie: Thanks. DaNang, Korat, Ubon & Udorn were fun places to be in the late sixties and seventies. Not! Actually, the F4E did have an internal 20mm cannon in the nose and before that, the F4D had an external gun-- 20mm gun pod. Sometimes, we strapped on three gun pods on the D. About a gazillion rounds per second. Rip a truck, boat or whatever to shreds in abour half a second, Shucks, twerent nothing! But, I digress from the subject of the article. Congrats to CBP. He and the team have had a superb year. It's a great time to be a TN VOL! I am a UT grad and have been a UT loyal fan for many years. I don't potty-mouth my country, my school, our teams, or our coaches. I don't drink orange koolaid and don't wear orange tinted glasses? No Way. Would hope that everyone could be "constructive" rather than "DEstructive." Bitterness serves no useful purpose to anyone, including the messenger.
Do I WANT UT to win a NC in every sport, every year? Certainly, but it is an unrealistic expectation. Cycles occur--take MBB for example. GO Vols--Win the SEC tourny!

I heard a rumor from 2 sources that Ramar Smith and Duke Crews were failing in academics and would be removed from the team in a couple of weeks. I sure hope that there is nothing to the rumor. Has anyone else heard anything?

A couple of weeks ago someone mention that they would get kicked off, but no one knew why.

Gatornation why play such a weak schedule, then call the SEC weak, or down this year. Billy should have went to the league. He's such an idiot. But I guess that's part of being a Gator. Who wa ya'll toughest game out of Conference.

I can tolerate AirFartOne. At least his brain's larger than a walnut.
And now comes gatornation: From among the less fortunate. This dude has to be logging on from a rehab center. Definitely needs professional help.

Once again we see the jealousy that surrounds "the total package". Its a shame everybody loves pearl...recruits, fans, media, everybody except the guys he beats up on every year. Keep it up Bruce.

I'm sure the Vols and BP would give up every honor to win the SEC Tournament and National Championship. Look at the big picture folks. Just ask Donovan which he would have chosen.

How many top 50 high school players does Pearl have? One I think, !st yr. player for TN Tyler Smith. What KY player isn't a blue chip top 50? This Gillespie gets coach of the yr. for leading those players to 18-12 with loses to Gardner-Webb and San Diego? Ky makes me sick and the corruption that goes with them.

Hey Air-terd-one, Wait til Pearl gets the talent every yr. KY gets.
Posted by jcvet on March 12, 2008 at 5:24 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Oh yeah, Ky suffered the worst SEC defeat in school history against Vandy this yr. Way to go "coach of the year"!

Air Force One,
Do you not know your stats? CBP has won 20 games 15 out of the sixteen seasons he has coached. Has your coached accomplished this? CBP did what he did with less talent than what KY had this year. He has won a national title at the D2 level. He has won seventy plus games and lost only like 22 games in his three years at UT, not to mention in three years he has won a SEC title. Also there is the fact that he did not lose to Gardner Webb, so please do not compare Gillipse and Coach Pearl. Coach Pearl is the Coach of the Year whether the basketball world acknowledges it or not Go Vols!!!!

IndyVol.......do us all a favor and take "Vol" part out your handle....change to IndyCat or IndyDope..or something more appropriate. The fact is that Kentucky had at best, a mediocre year....at best, one of the worst starts in Kentucky history, and at best, a disappointing showing against anyone on the road. As for the "down year" in the SEC.....well, take a look at Tennessee's road games and wins. Even to someone as dimwitted as you, the facts become obvious that Bruce Pearl did an outstanding coaching job....and stacked up against Kentucky...well, go look at YOUR road record. And if the SEC was so down and Kentucky had such a great coach, why didn't Kentucky do better on the SEC road? So before you begin making posts like some of those in this segment, see if you can engage your brain instead of your emotions.

One person wrote that Billy Donovan has not won COY. How did he not? One blue person on here wrote "Pearl had so much talent he was suppose to win." huh? Getting talent to your school and then getting the most out of them is as much coaching as X & O's during a game. So, Billy D did not win the last two years because he had to much talent? When you are suppose to win you have a target on your back. Other teams usually bring their A game. Fla the last two years was suppose to win and did. UT this year was suppose to win and did (SEC...more to come). Sounds like we have some SEC coachs who vote with red back sides.

AFOne: Couple of questions. If the SEC was so down this year, why didn't KY and the Faux Co Coach of the year win the title easily?
Our worse loss was a toss up between Kentucky at Rupp and Texas on a neutral court. Yours was losing by 100 at Vandy or losing at Rupp to Gardner Webb. Take your pick.

DAMMIT I hate responding to a 12-year old's post, but when I see someone say Tennessee had an easy schedule, I've gotta jump in. At Xavier, Texas, WV, at Gonzaga, Ohio State, at Memphis as non-conference!!! Florida played Ohio State, Florida State, and Temple as non-conference. WHO'S SCHEDULE IS THE FREAKING JOKE, TROLL?

Let's just let the Wildcat fans keep digging for answers for their declining sport program(s). We will just prove our success on the court and field. Pearl would gladly share the COY with Hill-Billy G. as long as his team remains on the track they are on. This was just a last effort reach for the Wildcats to try and keep their program afloat...GO VOLS!!!!!

most comments are hilariously funny. but af1 saying that the conference is down is a joke. three teams were ranked last year. ut, fla, and vandy. three teams this year ut,vandy and miss st. there is no dropoff. the only dropoff is gillespie taking a loaded team and underacheiving. with tubby that team wins the conference. gillespie was lost on the bottle the first half of the year.

Billy G:
his problem did NOT stem from COAcHING, IMHO. His problem came from the fact the players really loved Tubby, and I strongly believe they resented Billy G from the start.
Tubby didn't leave a program 'in tatters', that a new coach could come in and make great.
Billy G will be a force to contend with. He's been a good coach every place he has been. Like football, the SEC is just going to get tougher and tougher.
One real question: who will LSU, UGA, and USC get for coaches?? It would nto surprise me a bit to see one of those teams pull in a Keano Davis or Sean Miller.

What surprise me mparker is that Johnny Dawkins at Duke has not been mentioned for any Head Coaching positions. How much longer does he have to stay under Coach K before stepping out? I think the South Carolina job would be great for him.

Vote up Coach Pearl!
This funny video poll on flixgadget.com cheered me up after tonight’s loss: (http://www.flixgadget.com/wink.aspx). We clearly need to vote up Coach Pearl’s shirtless stunt – especially since Pitino’s corny white suit night is leading. Go Vols – 2009 Champs!
