Tennessee women's track coach J.J. Clark was named South Region Indoor Women's Coach of the Year and junior Sarah Bowman was named the region's Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Clark, in his fifth season at UT, received the award for the third time in the past four seasons (2005, 2007, 2008) after leading the Lady Vols to a runner-up finish at the SEC Indoors.
"I believe it (getting this award) shows the consistency that we've had," Clark said. "It's real, because there are coaches recognizing that. Our team is performing at a very high level, and, obviously, you can't do that without the support of your staff and the people around you. We've been fortunate to consistently perform at a high level and receive this award the past few years, and that's definitely the direction I want to continue to take this program."
Bowman won three events at the SEC meet. She was first in the mile in 4 minutes, 37.16 seconds, first in the 3,000-meter run in 9:28.29 and ran the anchor leg on the winning distance-medley relay team.
Men's Track: Tennessee team captain Jangy Addy was named SEC Field Athlete of the Year.
Addy won the heptathlon at the SEC Indoor Championships for the second consecutive year with a personal-best score of 5,836 points that ranks third on Tennessee's all-time performance list in the event and third in the NCAA this season. His score is ranked ninth all-time among American collegians in the heptathlon. His performance also featured a world-record tying time of 7.77 in the heptathlon 60 hurdles.
Women's Golf: The UT's women's golf team finished 14th in the 18-team UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. The Lady Vols shot a final-round 15-over 303 to finish at 30-over 894 in the three-day event at the par-72 RedTail Golf Club. Top-ranked Duke took the lead on the second day and won by nine shots at 851.
Tennessee entered the event ranked 14th by Golfstat and 15th in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
"It was another difficult day and a very disappointing tournament," Lady Vols coach Judi Pavon said. "Our short games are costing us a lot of shots out there. The field was extremely strong and a good preview of the NCAA Championship. We know we have a lot of work to do to get better and not waste shots on the course."
UT senior Marci Turner was leading her teammates until she shot 9-over-par 81 Tuesdady afternoon.
UT senior Marci Turner was only three over going into the back nine, but a pair of bogies and double bogies each, dropped her to 9-over 81. She finished tied for 47 with teammate Nicole Smith (72) at 223.
Also for UT: Diana Cantu shot 74 and tied for 52nd at 224; Angela Oh (78) tied for 63rd at 226; and Ginny Brown (79) tied for 86th at 235. Playing as an individual, freshman Rebecca Watson shot 80 to tie for 91st at 242.
Softball: The No. 6 Tennessee (21-3) softball team plays host to Tennessee State (6-10) for a doubleheader at Lee Softball Stadium. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
The Lady Vols have won all six meetings and have outscored the Tigers 78-1.
