Paced by the fourth home run of the season from freshman Jen Lapicki, the No. 6 Tennessee softball team finished off a doubleheader sweep of Tennessee State on Wednesday with a 4-1 victory at Lee Softball Stadium.
The Lady Vols (23-3) won the first game, 9-1, in five innings.
Lapicki went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and scoring two runs.
Junior left fielder Lillian Hammond also had a pair of singles, an RBI and a stolen base to help freshman Ashton Ward improve to 13-2. Ward allowed one hit and struck out five before giving way to senior Megan Rhodes, who pitched three innings for her fourth save.
In the first game, senior third baseman Tonya Callahan hit her fifth home run. Callahan went 1-for-3 with a solo home run to record her 201st career RBI. She needs two RBIs to tie former Lady Vol Kristi Durant for the UT career mark. Freshman shortstop Kelly Grieve ignited the speed game with a 3-for-3 effort, a walk and a steal. The Lady Vols stole six bases in the game.
Senior catcher Shannon Doepking was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and senior second baseman Kenora Posey scored twice and stole two bases, upping her team-leading total to 20.
Rhodes (10-1) allowed a run on two hits in five inning, striking out six.
