LeRoy places second in Zone B diving
SEC 3-meter diving champion Lauren LeRoy of the Tennessee Lady Vols qualified for the NCAA championships with a runnerup finish on the 1-meter springboard Friday in the Zone B Diving Championships at Auburn.
She scored 56 3.45 points on the 1-meter board. LeRoy and teammates Vicky Linnell Staley McCartney will attempt to qualify on the 3-meter springboard today.
"Lauren hit some key dives and did what she needed to do to take care of business," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Now we can focus on getting her ready for the NCAA championships (next week at Columbus, Ohio)."
The Vols didn't fare as well in 3-meter diving - Michael Muscari was 21st Ryan Rincon 26th and Chris Davis 28th.
Georgia's Chris Colwill was the winner with 444.60. Men will dive at the 1-meter level today and 10-meter Sunday.
Golf: The No. 8 Tennessee men's golf team shot a 6-under-par 282 in the first round to open a three-stroke lead at the 29th annual Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational. in Statesboro, Ga. The 54-hole tournament began Friday at the par-72, 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
UT freshman Robin Wingardh is tied for fourth place with a 3-under 69. Wingardh got off to a rough start with bogeys on two of his first four holes, but regrouped with five birdies including three on the back nine.
Chris Paisley of UT is tied for seventh at 70. Former West High School standout David Holmes is tied for 12th at 71, highlighted by an eagle on 16. Also for the Vols, Philip Pettitt (72) is tied for 16th 72 and Charlie Ford (74) is tied for 36th.
Softball: The No. 6 Lady Vols (23-3, 1-2 SEC) play host to Kentucky (11-8, 0-0) at the Lee Softball Stadium with a doubleheader today starting at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1.
Men's Tennis: The 13th-ranked Tennessee men's tennis team plays its final non-conference match of the regular season today when it hosts 31st-ranked Virginia Tech (9-1) at 11 a.m. at the Goodfriend Tennis Center. UT (12-1) was originally scheduled to play a doubleheader but the second match against Chattanooga has been canceled.
