Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl chews a fingernail as seeding was announced for the NCAA men's basketball tournament Sunday as team members watched the results from the Ray Mears Room at Thompson-Boling Arena. Fourth-ranked Tennessee received a No. 2 seed in the East Region of the NCAA.

Playing the University of North Carolina before a partisan crowd in Charlotte, N.C., with a Final Four berth on the line would be as tough a challenge as any team in the NCAA men's basketball tournament could face.

That's exactly the position the University of Tennessee hopes to put itself in after the tournament bracket was revealed Sunday.

The Vols begin the tournament 12:15 p.m. Friday (TV: WVLT) in the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex in Alabama. Tennessee is a No. 2 seed in the East Region, facing No. 15 seed American University, the champion of the Patriot League.

A victory over American would send the Vols to the second round on Sunday against either Butler University or the University of South Alabama.

The survivor in Birmingham advances to Charlotte on March 27. The University of Louisville, the region's No. 3 seed, and North Carolina, the bracket's overall No. 1 seed, are likely opponents there.

The Final Four is in San Antonio April 5-7.

The Vols hoped to land one of the 65-team bracket's four No. 1 seeds. They were given instead to North Carolina, Memphis, UCLA and Kansas.

UT men's athletic director Mike Hamilton said tickets for the Birmingham games are available. To purchase tickets, call 800-732-4849 or buy online at southtix.com.

Do it Vols. One game at a time. Go Vols!

Typical consideration for UT. The 1998 NCs of football proved the NCAA wrong when they made us an underdog to FSU. I truly belive that UT can take UNC if they make it that far.

My wife is a diehard UNC fan. My house will be rockin if the match up is created, but she is the ONLY tarheel in the house. The kids bleed orange!!!

Remember guys, one game at a time. Don't get ahead of yourselves. Play your game and the Ws will come to you if deserved.

GO BIG ORANGE!!!

If this team doesn't get re-focussed it'll be 2 and out. A peak was reached at Memphis and there have maybe been two good halves of basketball since. Hopefully being the 8th overall seed will accomplish the re-focussing part.

It's the shoes. Lose the black shoes.

Why did we change shoes, especially when Lofton had a footwear issue in the past? Sorry if this is rehash material, but I've not been able to spend the time to go through all the articles and numerous comments lately.

don't look past the earlier games like you looked past South Carolina and Arkansas. Remember how Butler kicked out butts last year in a pre-season tournament that we all thought would be an easy win? There is no way that Georgia is better than the Vols, but we didn't come prepared to play defense and that's why we got screwed by the committee. No one to blame but ourselves, but now we have a chance for big time redemption and shut up all the ESPN jerks who don't think we belong. GO VOLS!!

AMEN about those awful black shoes! Put 'em in the closet with those 'orange things' the football Vols wore once upon a time. EVERY team is shooting for the Final Four, & our Vols need to remember that! It's called "Madness" for a reason.
Now bang the boards, hit the free throws & let's go get 'em, VOLS!

What a slap in the face to Tennessee after everything they've done this year. If I was on the team, I would be madder than hell and looking to destroy whoever steps on the court in front of me... not just win, but try to humiliate my opponent. We'll need very, very, very aggressive play in the post and in our half-court defensive sets to make it to San Antonio.

Gaytornation: Just because you guys have to "watch" March Madness doesn't make it right for you to post your BS on our boards. Get a life! Go Vols
