COLUMBIA, S.C. - Police say a South Carolina football player has been charged with disorderly conduct during a St. Patrick's Day festival in the bar and restaurant district near the downtown campus.
Senior walk-on safety Michael Newton was released Sunday from the Richland County jail.
Richland County sheriff's spokeswoman Kim Myers told The State that Newton and other men were throwing chairs and would not stop when officers told them to.
He is the second player charged this month. Under university policy, Newton is automatically suspended.
A woman answering the phone Sunday night at a listing for Newton said he wasn't home.
Newton played in five games last year for the Gamecocks after sitting out the 2006 season because he transferred from Newberry.

The one thing I will say is that I am grateful...no matter how it came to pass...that I haven't seen anything bad at all about our football team for weeks that is negative or unlawful! Keep it up guys! It's VERY important! The more other schools have problems and the less we have them..the more we recover in image!

tngeoff ,Shhhhh!Don't awake the beast!
Bigger_Al ,His HS coach? This is CPF's fault.I heard he was recruiting down their this week.Trouble follows him everywhere.
Hopefully the leaders of this team have shown their moxy, and turned this into a focused group.

I agree with tngeoff. It goes to show that this UT team is growing up, and getting tighter. The jr. & sr. took the bull by the horns, and said "no more of this kid stuff." We still hear other schools having trouble. But have not heard a thing sence the leaders took over! GO VOLS!

I hope you're right about the leaders! I love this silence of the Vols. By the way...you are becoming legendary in YouTubing! Keep it up! That always lightens even the darkest moments! Great work.

sjt18- True, maybe we made our quota. Its been very quiet on the orange front.
After we were upstaged with the BB gun robbery by the Tide player, they realized they do have a responsibility. To the school and themselves.
Awaiting the doldrums with a small amount of angst.
Ready for them to begin.
