ORLANDO, Fla. — Top-seeded Tennessee leads 12 women’s teams in the NCAA tournament with perfect graduation rates.
A report released Tuesday found the Lady Vols graduated all their players during a four-year period. Other schools with perfect graduation rates from 1997-2001 were Bucknell, Marist, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Robert Morris, San Diego, Syracuse, Texas and Vanderbilt.
Only one men’s NCAA tournament team studied by Richard Lapchick, head of the University of Central Florida’s Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport, achieved perfect graduation success: 12th-seeded Western Kentucky.
“Women have regularly been the best news academically in college sport,” Lapchick said in the report.
Among the No. 1 seeds in the women’s tournament, Connecticut was next with a 92-percent graduation rate, followed by Maryland (71 percent) and North Carolina (64 percent).
The study looked at four freshman classes entering from 1997-2001, giving each six years to graduate. The players studied are no longer on campus, but the report intends to show academic trends.
Lapchick remained concerned about achievement gaps between black and white students, which is less severe among female than male players. Fifty-five of the 64 women’s teams graduated at least 70 percent or more of their white players, while black players had that success rate at 36 schools.
In Lapchick’s report on men’s graduation rates released Monday, 33 schools graduated at least 70 percent of white male basketball players; only 19 schools graduated that percentage of black players.
Only one of the women’s teams, Jackson State, graduated less than 40 percent of its players. Fourteen of the 65 teams in the men’s NCAA field were under that benchmark.

You obviously read the article so you must care otherwise you wouldn't have wasted you valuable time reading or commenting. If you don't like the Lady Vols, don't read about them and don't comment about them.
Go Lady Vols.

I would go way out on a limb and say 90+% of the people who chime in here care enough to be curious about the Lady Vols. The other 10% who bother to register & login simply have an inane desire to be nasty and hateful. I must say I am so proud of our Lady Vols' academic achievements. That's way more important than the numbers on the scoreboard.

Go stick your head in the ground. I care about the Lady Vols and have for a long time. In fact I care even more now since I can see more of their games with satellite TV and the Internet. I guarantee you that any game that I can receive I will watch. Pat is the GREATEST COACH in HISTORY.

You all should know that Pat is really proud of the graduation rate. I have read in the past that she told her players that they must attend class and sit in the first 2 rows of the class. If they had to miss a class Pat had to be told ahead of time. I remember a few years ago when she suspended Michelle Snow (starting center and one of my favorite players) for one game because she skipped a class. Michelle told Pat that she was working on a paper for another class, but Pat said you should have told me ahead of time.

I got 1 word.Summitt!
Summitt:"I'm a coach, so I take the issue of control personally."
"If I was renowned as as tough coach, I also wanted to be a caring one."
"Sit up straight, listen and participate."
nowwalking,Yes, most of us meatheads care too.We are all Vols!

I say GO VOLS and that means everybody that wears the orange and white. Coach Summitt's record is unbelieveable and all should be very very proud that she has won 84% of her games over the last 34 years. WOW

Someone can only play sports at a high level for a limited number of years, but their academic success lasts a lifetime.
The coaching staff sees that the Lady Vols have their priorities right. They will not recruit a player that has little chance of making the grade. For this, I am most thankful and I respect their efforts tremendously.

Unbelievable as usual, we all repeat the same accolades for this program, these coaches, these girls, but it is worth repeating, over and over again. This program, these girls, are special, no one can ever take that away.

If my memory doesn't fail me, every player who has completed her eligability at UT under Coach Summitt has graduated. This is for her entire coaching career not just four years. UT has had 7 Academic All-Americans, and 39 Academic All-SEC. Several players were repeat winners for both awards. Now for a truly amazing fact, if you compare All-SEC numbers Coach Summitt has had more Academic members than Performance members, 39 compared to 33. Several players appear on all of those lists, players like Parker Lawson, Rankin and Catchings.
