GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Every time Florida coach Urban Meyer sees Emmanuel Moody, he tells the running back the same thing.
“I don’t say hello to him,” Meyer said. “I just walk by and say, ’Boy, I hope you’re really good.’ I don’t know what else to say. ... I hope he’s really, really, really good. I don’t know if he is.”
Meyer and the Gators may soon find out.
A former Parade All-American who transferred from Southern Cal last fall, Moody will make his debut when Florida begins spring practice Wednesday.
“Everybody’s anxious to see Emmanuel Moody,” Meyer said.
Especially Meyer, who called Florida’s running back position “inadequate” last season.
Quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow was the team’s leading rusher, gaining 895 yards and scoring 23 touchdowns. Speedy receiver Percy Harvin was second with 764 yards rushing and six scores.
The team’s starting running back, Kestahn Moore, saw his playing time diminish after costly fumbles in losses to LSU and Georgia. Moore finished with 580 yards rushing and six touchdowns — far from the dominant runner Meyer wanted to help take some of the load and focus off Tebow and Harvin.
“I keep hearing about a 1,000-yard rusher,” Meyer said. “We would have had one last year if he’d take care of the football a little bit better.”
Moody could make a difference.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound Texan ran for 459 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman at USC and was the team’s second-leading rusher despite missing four games with a sprained ankle. He decided to transfer because the Trojans had a stockpile of talent in the backfield.
He visited North Carolina and Florida last August, then chose the Gators because he wanted “to be a featured back.”
He could get a shot this spring, although Moore, Mon Williams and Chris Rainey also will be in the mix.
“I’m very anxious to see the development of a group that’s been very disappointing as far as production,” Meyer said. “There are good players there. There’s some that could become great players. They have not done that.”
The running back situation is one of several interesting story lines of Florida’s spring.
Others include:
—Rebuilding a defense that ranked 41st in the nation last season. The Gators, who had defensive breakdowns in just about every game, gave up 362 yards a game. They were even worse in pass defense (98th), sacks (54th) and points allowed (46th).
—Finding a backup quarterback. Tebow has a strong hold on the starting job, but Cameron Newton and John Brantley will battle for the backup spot. Meyer has vowed to use two quarterbacks next season.
—Installing the no-huddle offense. Tebow ran the no-huddle in high school and had much success, so the Gators want to try it this spring.
—Adjusting to new coaches. Meyer hired three coaches this year: cornerbacks coach Vance Bedford, running backs coach Kenny Carter and defensive line coach Dan McCarney. It marked the first turnover for Meyer’s staff since he started assembling the group in 2004.
“Change has been refreshing,” Meyer said.
All three new coaches have significant undertakings, but thanks to Moody, Carter may have the most talent to work with this spring.
“I’m very proud of the way Kenny’s handled it so far,” Meyer said. “I’m anxious to see how he does this spring and see the development of that position.”

Hmmm, taking the ball out of Tebow's and Harvin's hands. I like that idea.

Anyone know why we have two stories about the Gators on GOVOLS.com? John Adams was a Gator.

Why is it we can get stories about UF's new RB but not about UT's new WR's coach? TE's coach? RB's coach?... or even a reasonably in depth story about Clawson.
This WAS an AP story apparently but still... when you have a staff that large and devote this much space to an AP story about another team...

Agreed, WD40plusVol.
Also, if that 2nd paragraph is a typical example of Meyer's "people skills", he probably has very few admirers.

There are more Gator stories on this site today than usual, notice how it brings out the Gator fans in here. Honestly, in a Vols forum I could care less about Floridas running game (or lack of one) Lets talk Tennessee football! Go Vols!

The guys transfers to UF because he wants to be a "featured back"? In an Urban Meyer offense? Ri-i-i-i-ight.
Good luck

Out of pure boredom, I looked at recent history of 5* backs.Beetween 2002 & 2005, there was 21 5* backs.Out of those 21, only 5 have lived up to any of their expectations.02'Jerius Norwood MSU, 03'Reggie Bush USC,03'Brandon Jacobs AU(moreso in the NFL than college),04'Adrian Peterson OU,05'Jonathan Stewart OR.75% failure rate.
Moody was a 4* ,but I used 5* players b/c there are less of them,to point out how hard it is to grade skill positions especially RB.UF seems to think this kid will save their running game, but in my opinion they better find more than 1 w/ those odds.At this point I feel more comfortable w/ Creer,Poole, and Vereen than I would w/ UF's stable.(in the future)
Just thought it was interesting.I still wouldn't mind a couple 5* DT's though.

Why doesn't Moody have to sit out a year? Wasn't he a freshman last year at USC?

Moody sat out last year. Just my opinion, but it doesn't seem like transfers are usually all that great. I think Gators run game will be greatly improved and RB a lot of us down here are excited about is Mon Williams. He was running first team preseason last year before tearing his ACL. If he is healthy he will be a stud..
