Chalk up one game for Ashton Ward.
Chalk up the other game to rain.
The No. 8-ranked Tennessee softball team saw Ward do her thing in a 2-0, nine-inning victory in game one of a doubleheader at South Carolina on Wednesday. Then the rain did its thing,
UT (26-4. 4-3 SEC) and the Gamecocks (13-3, 2-5) were knotted 1-1 in the top of the fifth of game two - bases loaded with one out for the Lady Vols - when umpires called the game because of heavy downpours hitting Columbia, S.C.
The series finale will not be rescheduled and all statistics will be erased from the record books.
Ward was the story in game one.
The freshman pitcher went the distance and limited the Gamecocks to two hits in nine innings. She struck out five and improved her record to 15-2 with a 1.39 ERA.
The Lady Vols had 10 hits and stranded 11 runners, but freshman pinch-hitter Chandra Mogan came through with the game-winning RBI single in the ninth. UT added an insurance run when Tonya Callahan dropped a sacrifice bunt to score Kelly Grieve from third.
Sophomore catcher Tiffany Huff went 3-for-4.
Tennessee continues its road trip Friday with a trip to Arkansas.

I was at this game. The gamecocks purposely stalled several times before the officials finally called it. Why? basesloaded, 1 out and Tonya Callahan was at bat. Shame, this would have been a win the Lady Vols might need later on.
