Steelers release Wilson after his arrest

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers released former University of Tennessee wide receiver Cedrick Wilson on Thursday, hours after he was charged with punching his estranged girlfriend in the face at a suburban restaurant.

The 29-year-old player was arraigned on charges of simple assault, harassment and disorderly conduct and freed on $10,000 bail.

“We’re extremely disappointed with this incident,” team chairman Dan Rooney said. “The Steelers do not condone violence of any kind, especially against women.”

Wilson apologized and said he will be treated for anger management.

“I shouldn’t have done it. I hold myself to a higher standard than that,” he told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “I just want to apologize to Lindsey, her family, the NFL family and the Pittsburgh Steeler nation. I let them down.”

Lindsey Paulat told police that Wilson pushed her on the shoulder at the Patron Mexican Grill on Wednesday night. She said when she turned around he punched her in the left side of her face, according to the complaint.

Her left cheek was red and swollen, and witnesses told officers what happened, police said. Officers later found Wilson as he was leaving his Pine Township home in his car.

Wilson said he would attend anger-management classes “to better myself for my child and my other children. It’s tough to even talk about because I’m a man that’s always tried to keep my nose clean.”

Wilson’s attorney, Paul Goltz, is out of the country. A woman at Goltz’s office said the lawyer handling the case would not comment. Wilson’s agent, Tom Condon, did not return calls.

Earlier this month, Steelers linebacker James Harrison was charged with hitting his girlfriend. He has a preliminary hearing April 3 and remains with the team.

Team spokesman Dave Lockett said Harrison’s dispute began when he argued with his girlfriend about whether to baptize his son.

“In no way do we condone domestic violence of any kind,” Rooney said in a statement Thursday evening. “Each incident must be considered on a case-by-case basis. In the situation with James Harrison, he contacted us immediately after his incident and has taken responsibility for his actions.”

Harrison “said his conduct was wrong and he was embarrassed to be associated with the label of a perpetrator of domestic violence,” Harrison’s attorney, Robert Del Greco, said Thursday. Harrison then quickly sought anger management counseling, which he still attends, Del Greco said.

Wilson and the woman he’s accused of hitting were also involved in a fight in January.

Police charged her with firing two gunshots after Wilson left his town house. Paulat, who is also the mother of Wilson’s 1-year-old daughter, is awaiting trial.

Wilson, a backup, signed with the Steelers as a free agent from San Francisco in 2005. He caught 81 passes for 1,162 yards and two touchdowns in three seasons with the Steelers.

I'm just waiting for someone to blame Fulmer for this.

2000volfan: You beat me to it! I was going to say the same thing.

Didn't she get arrested last year for beating him up?

2000volfan-- you can count on this being in John Adams' next "It's all Fulmer's fault" article. He just added it to his list, I'm sure.

I'm sure it was just a big misunderstading. This is one of Fulmer's boys.

The steelers probley wanted him gone anyway, because, many others who are liked by a team can allmost get by with murder before getting released. Take mickel vick, and the falcons. Pac man and the Titens.

The article I read says in January, they were involved in a fight that led to her pulling an armed standoff. She accused Wilson of encouraging her to commit suicide and was charged with aggravated assault and reckless endangerment.
which was later changed to discharging a firearm in an occupied structure She allegedly fired two shots after he left the house. He obtained a temporary protection-from-abuse order against her alleging she kicked him and that he feared she would shoot him if she got a gun.

this is dan rooney who made this move because he only allows so much crap to go on instead of "bumbling bud" who needs godell to forcibly suspend him for worse

This is all Fulmer's fault. If he had just made Wilson run midnight windsprints all this could have been avoided. I love it when John Adams is right.

Think of all the bad publicity this is garnering for UT. How could Fulmer let this happen?

If Fulmer would only listen to John Adams. All of our guys would be pro bowl NFL Angels.

If this is fact, i applaud the Steelers for not tolerating this type of thing.

Bad comparison between this and Fulmers approach on this type of scenario, real bad.

On one hand, you have a kid, 18-22 years old, away from home at college, probally further from home then they have ever been, gets in trouble - what do you teach them by kicking them to the street when they make a mistake? Trust no one? This is your family, but we'll get rid of you in a heart beat? No chances for redemption in life? Yea, genious, if you think like John Adams, which is on par with talking out your you-know-what.

The NFL, you are talking about a grown man by that point, if they aren't, then they just don't get it, you are at a completely different stage of your life, you are getting paid to do a job, not at school, not away from home the first time.

Anywho, I don't believe we had any players beat their girlfriends, I thought it was stuff like drinking? You know, that new activity kids nowadays do *note the sarcasm*......that right there makes this a completely different situation.

I can't believe Fulmer has raised gas prices so much!

Volchaz - don't clap too hard. If your a MVP type plyer, the Steelers leave you on the team.

Fulmer is reponsible for Global Warming. No really. I don't want to get too graphic here, but you get the picture. If not, Kingsportvol will explain it to you.

GreerVol22 - please post again or email me. I missed your post. The KNS Natzi got it before I could read it.

So from what the article says "The Steelers do not condone violence of any kind, especially against women.”
That only applies to non-starters.

if someone hit sylvia fowles would that be ok?

Adams you now have grounds to revise your article "fire Fulmer"

Posted by nicksjuzunk on March 20, 2008 at 11:05 p.m. (Suggest removal)

It was over whether or not to baptize??? It sounds like these two could use a little dunkin' themselves!

Hope Cedric gets it worked out. Dang shame.

Why would you get back with someone who obviously has a "can't get right" behavior? Now it's cost him his job and unneeded publicity.

Fulmer did it!! Fire Fulmer!! He controls everything, even the weather, Katrina anyone?? I pray that Cedric will repent of hitting the girl, and get his priorities right. God, country, family, job, etc. Someone agree with me. And thanks

nicksjuzunk: free advice--read article before posting. The baptizing issue concerned the incident with James Harrison, not Cedric. Wilson and his girlfriend have a history of conflict, but baptism was not an issue with them; at least not as mentioned in the article.

Pennington will probably line up some more disgruntled ex-vols to trash Fulmer over this.

Posted by dtaylor0730 on March 28, 2008 at 12:25 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Fulmer is responsible for the serious economic decline in the US and the housing crisis that will put thousands of Americans out of a home. I also think he has something to do with Katrina and the Gulf Coast devastation. I wonder what else we can pin on him?

Like Fulmer had anything to do with this incident...
